  • In 2001, the Montana State Bobcats were scheduled to play the Oregon State Beavers in a non-conference game. However, a few days before the game, Montana State announced that the game was cancelled, while Oregon State announced that the game was still on. Chaos and conflict ensued, and the ending was rather bizarre, and the result of poor planning and crisis management all the way around

    That Montana State/Wazzu game was on a Thursday night, October 18. Idaho "hosted" UL Lafayette on Saturday 10/20 at Martin Stadium.

    I entirely understand why the Beavers thought the game was happening, and I entirely understand why Montana State thought it wasn't. Neither school was really at fault here. And I say that as an Oregon Ducks fan, which means I'm inherently predisposed to see anything the Beavers do in a profoundly negative light.

      @DolFan316 Před rokem +6

      Nah, Oregon St. was entirely at fault here. You don't try to force an opponent to play you and then suddenly decide to cancel the game like they thought all along at the last minute.

      I appreciate your honesty regarding your bias. As someone who is currently at OSU for an engineering degree and someone who was raised orange and black because my parents went to Oregon State, I have a profound bias against the UO (which I try to be aware of), I would like to think that if the situation was reversed I would be non-biased.
      All of 2001 was a strange football season, just as 2020 was. Like other's have said, at least both teams were able to find other teams to play for the game. And that the teams were able to play in 2020, as strange of a year as that was.

      @@DolFan316 In my opinion, I think if there is anyone to take most of the blame, it's the Pac-10. Why force certain games to be postponed but not others? That makes zero sense. They should have just either said all games are still on, or just cancel or postpone all games that week regardless of if they were conference games or not.

      If you saw what the Beavs did to the Ducks in this year's Civil War, I can understand better what you mean by your profoundly negative light predisposition...

      That Montana State might have difficulty lining up an opponent could have entered play here.
      Wazzu was to host Colorado as the back end of a home and home from 1996. The Big XII didn't reschedule the champ game (which CU beat Texas) so they were suddenly out.
      It's possible that Montana State was holding on until they had a replacement ready.

    For Montana State, games like this are called "PayDay" games. They get so much money for showing up and getting whacked. I was a XC Skier at Montana State in the 80's, when we played a top rated school the PayDay games funded over half of the Athletic departments budget.

    Thank goodness each program was able to find replacement opponents that season, but that's just nuts! At least they finally met in Portland in 2022 FWIW.

    • @mgb4692
      @mgb4692 Před rokem +2

      And the only reason Wazzu was a open is because the Big XII wouldn't reschedule the CG, leaving Colorado (who would beat Texas in the title game) unavailable.
      Which may have been a small reason MSU originally tried to keep the game.

    I vaguely remember talk about this at the time. I think part of Oregon State's decision to cancel was that if the game was played it would have been the only college football game that Saturday. The first post-911 game was my school, South Carolina traveling to Mississippi State on September 20 for a previously scheduled Thursday night SEC game that was broadcast on ESPN.

    The part I don't understand is if people's emotions were still stirred up from 9/11. Shouldn't OSU have thought about that BEFORE trying to convince Montana St. To play???

    I played on that 2001 Montana State team and remember it being such a big deal because Oregon State was ranked #1 at the time. We were saddened that we couldn't go play on that big stage but gravity of what happened on September 11th was too heavy.

    • @zeebee3606

      They weren't #1 lol. They were ranked I'm sure but prolly more like #10-15. They smashed notre dame in Fiesta bowl the year before and I believe finished at #3 in the last poll.

    Very interesting video. But if my memory serves me correctly, weren't all the games canceled on Sept. 15? I think there were several schools still trying to play their games but there was too much pressure from the public to take a knee for one weekend to mourn the 9/11 tragedy. I remember reading the message boards that week when the game was on, and then it was off, and then it was game on again. But then when they finally canceled the game, I was cool with it.

      All major games were either cancelled or postponed that weekend, yet some schools made up those games due to a common bye week.
