  • Have you ever wanted to pay face value for tickets to a game that you can't even go to? Well, prior to the 2002 Hawaii Bowl, Tulane had an idea to raise money for the game and for the athletic department, featuring a "genius" move to get fans to buy tickets to the game without actually going to the game. And this plan, to the shock of no one except for Tulane's athletic director, backfired spectacularly

    Nah. The dumbest business decision in Tulane football history is, in hindsight, leaving the SEC.

      The same can be said of Sewanee. But the reality of the situation is that neither program could possibly have known at that point in college football history not only how big the sport would get, but also how big the SEC would wind up becoming.

    Tulane almost discontinued football in 1985 in the wake of the point-shaving scandal which prompted then-president Eamon Kelly to shutter the men's basketball program for four seasons.
    A 14-member council studied whether or not to keep football. The first vote was deadlocked 7-7. The second vote was taken the night before the Green Wave's game vs. LSU. Eight in favor, six opposed. Football survived. BARELY.

    Offering seats for the 2003 season's games would've been nice, but Tulane didn't have that kind of foresight.

    Second dumbest decision in Tulane Football History, right after leaving the SEC.

    • @mrmoose6619
      @mrmoose6619 Před rokem +2

      Actually, the decision to leave the SEC was because at that time they found it difficult to play against the larger state schools that the SEC was made of at the time. In 1966, when the decision was made, they did not have a winning season since 1949 (the last championship). They were debating going down to D2 or giving up football altogether, but were able to remain independent for 3 decades, back when being independent was not a curse like it is today. They were at least somewhat competitive after going down, getting into some bowls before joining Conference USA.
      The University of the South (Sewanee) made the same decision decades earlier, as they too are a smaller private school, so it's not unprecedented.

      @lsuvsfar5071 Před rokem

      @@mrmoose6619 I understand why they did it, but let's be honest. Their improvement by going independent was fairly limited. They have ended the season ranked 4 times since they left the SEC. By leaving the SEC, Tulane has been marginally more successful, and significantly less wealthy. Granted, there wasn't any real way to know what money they'd be missing out on back in 1965, but even before the money got to be insane, Tulane tried to rejoin the SEC and failed.

    • @lsuvsfar5071
      @lsuvsfar5071 Před rokem

      @@Oregonman2011 Even leaving the SEC, they've been pretty comparable to Vanderbilt. Tulane has finished ranked 4 times since leaving, Vanderbilt has finished ranked 2 times in that same time.

    Looking at the 2003 schedule they definitely could have included a ticket to the season opener against TCU, which drew 29,000 people to the Superdome (i.e. nowhere near a sellout). Hell make it $45 so the TCU game is "$5".

  • @larryjones8597
    @larryjones8597 Před rokem +2

    Tulane had to go to the bowl. Even at a financial loss it was a league affiliated Bowl, a reward for a great season and great exposure for the team and the school. Selling tickets at full price as "commemorate value" has some merit as they could always be sold, long after the game (which we won) was over. Marking them down plus adding tickets for next season really wouldn't work. You may have gotten a few more sold, but you're giving away tickets to people who would normally buy them anyway. Imagine a paying for a season ticket package when you already have a ticket for one game anyway. The lost revenue is negligible. TU was never gonna sell its full allotment. Even so, that revenue is made up for with one or more big booster donations, which would be more likely to happen since we won.

    Kind of disappointed in the lack of details of just what "backfired" means. They lost money...but obviously not enough to ki-bosh the football program. So was the AD fired? Were there editorials in response? Did the AD or President have a response? Did Tulane make some sort of other deal to try to make up for it like selling the naming rights to something? I would have preferred more facts and fewer analogies.
