That was incredible. However i don't really understand the path you followed. I had a quick look on google maps and the distance from Baikonur is less than 30km. I assume it's not viable to start from Baikonur? It would be nice if you explained the path you took.
Pretty cool footage
Never knew these existed
The Bering Theater was where I saw JAWS in 1975. Everyone jumped up in their seats when it was Ben Gardner time. Swam in that pool hundreds of times. Great childhood memories
My dad CTTCS worked there from December 1973 until he retired in July 1976. NAVSECGRU
Great video!
Thank you, and please check out the follow-up video when I returned in the winter of 2022/23. It’s a better video! → czcams.com/video/e9H0O-gxJ4Y/video.html
I mean I see lights on in the back so not completely abandoned lol
The site I’m filming from is the abandoned $125 billion section of the Baikonur Cosmodrome spaceport.
@chrisluckhardt still cool regardless 😎 the other shot you have of space craft was so cool
Where are these?
Great video man. Wow
So cool and nostalgic
I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
“Ozymandias” by poet Percy Bysshe Shelley
@@chrisluckhardt amazing video! I'm not usually a sappy poetic type, but the video drew that out.
I was in Adak working for 2 months in 2008 was amazing tour the community sir enjoy my time being there,,I am from southwest was region 😊
Honestly one of the best videos I've watched of the place. I appreciate the silence and when needed the screen notes.
Glad you like the immersive editing approach!
Hopefully I can turn it into a normal plane.
Just started watching your videos. My family use to take me here in the late 80s through around 2000. I have to say that Red Devil was an OK roller-coaster although out of all times I been it was only open 2 times. Back in the day the wild west shows on the train were actually fun though when they did run. It was far more fun just to go to CARROWINDS on the border of both the Carolinas. In today's society they would have to add alot more than what they ever had to make it funju I. Great video though.
I helped paint the Bering theater in spring of 71 CWO Varley and I were on top of some very shaky scaffolding scared stiff when a ensign standing flat footed on the floor said he hadn’t better see some enlisted man put his foot on wall. Mr Varley responded in his baritone “doesn’t have to be an enlisted man” the ensign quivered!
Chris, no more videos? I´m sure more people then me are missing them.
Thank for asking, Jon! I have a new series of videos coming soon, with a new twist for some of them. Cheers!
Great, looking forward to them ✌️😀 Stay safe
My grandfather killed himself here on my birthday no less…. :(
It's kindof depressing seeing such a engineering marvel just sit there rusting away, not even left on a museum to get commemorated for it's feats like the American space shuttle.
Was stationed there from 84-86.
I was stationed there 92-94. Beginning at about 18:20 you see the Ptarmigan Club aka P-Club. Behind the drywall where people signed their names is a wall drawn in the 1940's depicting an Aleuts Village. It's very cool. We were not allowed to display it when we discovered it because it was not politically correct. Behind the glass walls across from the bowling alley was a snack bar. The people in MWR worked hard at NSGA. THANK YOU. Thanks for posting this video. MWR had P-Club, snack bar, bowling, ceramics shop, hobby shop, auto shop, the gym for sports and movies. Many special events were held in the gym too.

@@MitchellBrown-su9dc It was a different life. The video was sad to watch.
Yes Sir
The Buran (shark) ised to take off like a plane and land on its own.
Shark?
Even if you bought it and saved it, it wouldnt be the same. So sad they knocked it down. Like it never existed.
My dad grew up on the farm next door, which later was owned by one of his older brothers. He sold it, and the new neighbours invited us over after completing renovations. I asked my dad after the visit what he thought of all the changes. Without missing a beat, he said, “You can’t go home again.” His words were so present as I was walking through the house again for the first time in almost two decades.
@chrisluckhardt Wow! I've been waiting for the day to visit my childhood home, I pass by it every day because I only moved 5 minutes away but it's still the same owners since we left. 25 years later, still waiting hahaha. I drove up in the driveway once and talked to the owner about I lived there. He remembered us. I should've asked for a tour. He said the place is the same, no renovations which is crazy.
Where is ghost church at exactly?
Man, back then, a big Mac cost $2.45. Now it costs $7.
Big Mac meal in the continental United States in the early 1990s was $2.99. That's around $6.50 with inflation now. So, it's doubled in price over the past 30 years with most areas charging around $15 for the same meal. Crazy!
What a beautiful childhood home. If I was a billionaire, I would buy the property, restore the home and return it to you. Thank you for uploading the video and sharing your beautiful childhood home story. 😍
Thank you for watching! I would love to buy the property back and rebuild someday because it was a perfect place in the world to grow up.
Vandals are bums who could never pay for all the damages they have done so they should spend about 10 years at hard labor.
Been over 50yrs since I saw Sanka on the menu, even spellcheck doesn't know it is a word. Except for the NEX and commissary EVERYTHING in Alaska is more $$, still sweet prices.
Sanka amazingly still exists in other parts of the world. McDonald's switched in 2005 to Gaviña Gourmet Coffee in the US and Mother Parker's in Canada.
@@chrisluckhardt You know your McD's decaf!! You reply to many of your comments, good man.
@@bender7565 Thanks, but it's a coincidence! An urban legend up here in Canada is that our most popular coffee chain, Tim Hortons, swapped coffee beans with McDonald's years ago as the reason Timmies coffee became terrible. The truth is Tim Hortons opened an internal roasting facility. Assuming you're American, now you know 1000% more about Canada than you'll ever need to know. 😂
I was born on this island in 1988. I would love to return one day to see it.
an odd comment I'm sure, but I'm running a TTRPG campaign where this is the setting. you have no idea how helpful having a walkthrough like this is to making a map!! thanks so much & glad you're safe!!
Thanks, it’s a perfect setting for a TTRPG!
Amazing 👏
Let the wind & the foot sounds & pictures speak, No cinematic music, this was brilliant, excellent video, great peoples behind them. Very nice.
Awesome
Super interesting video - and channel ! !!
The poor old lady that tried to keep it going passed away. The money to keep a place like this going these days is ridicules insurance and maintenance cost it was bound to fail anyway. Sad stuff. They could not even afford a security guard to patrol after a year of shutdown.
SUCH A SHAME THEY DIDN'T RIP IT ALL DOWN & REPLACE IT WITH VEGETATION, TREES & LEAVE A NATURAL LANDSCAPE....LIKE IT WAS B4 THE MILITARY GOT THERE. BUT THEY R ALL ABOUT DESTRUCTION & NOTHING ABOUT RENEWAL OR REPAIRING. FKN PSCHOPATHS MOST OF THEM.
It's really to Bad, that after the base was closed, the population declined to a very small number, and looking at the damage, the town population most all must have turned into vandals. Not a nice place to live 😢🇨🇦
The damage you see is from the extremely windy and wet climate, the young 1997-2004 contractors who were cleaning up toxic waste, and subsequent visitors over the years. The remaining 33 permanent residents are peaceful and preserving/protecting whatever they can. And they all love it out there.
@@chrisluckhardt Okay, I can accept that resident locals, now living in the community did not do the damage. Someone did, it's not all environmental
@@stevecarlisle3323 For sure, and I specified the source of the damage in my last comment. But I left out one incident - a group of junior coast guardsmen were caught and punished just before the pandemic for vandalizing several prominent structures. I read a news article about it while doing my research on the island. The other details were shared by locals and discovered during other research.
-6c is cold
Why is it not supported anymore? although it may lasted 8 years wow.... by the end of the year 2053 that steel bar will eventually be decompose itself.
This McDonald's was abandoned in 1994. The family who had the franchise closed it as Adak's military base began decommissioning. The base was finally closed in 1997, and most of the island's population left. Only 33 permanent residents live there now. Also, the brand of weather-resistant steel used in construction there could last well beyond the year 2100.
@@chrisluckhardt will that make since. thank you
I'm sorry I should have waited till the end of the video
Why don't you see if you can buy it
Where is this in Buffalo
What actually happened to this island 😢
Mitsubishi closed the mines and moved everyone off the island. Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of the operation’s final day.
Is there is any touristers there ???
Tourists are able to visit the southern tip of the island on an official tour since 2009. My first two visits to Hashima were the covert method as seen in this video. But I did take the official tour for fun and to experience the public’s version of seeing the island.
Which month did you visited?
July 30 to August 3.
WHAT HAPPEN TO THIS LUXURIOUS HOTEL...
It was a casualty of Detroit's 50-year decline.
Why not enter the shuttles? You surely knew to take a rope
32:35 explains why we didn't get inside one of the shuttles. We considered trying to get inside Ptichka but decided it was best to climb back up in case patrols returned.
It must be incredibly frustrating to be a Russian scientist or Engineer. So many of them are incredibly talented but most of their efforts turn to sh1t for political reasons or lack of money. That sometimes still happens in the West of course.
Super cool!
Very sad..spent15 months there in the mid 80s.once youve been there the place will never leave you
