    Market Street Power Plant is a defunct early 20th century power plant in New Orleans. I returned in April 2022 to revisit and explore the massive riverfront building with its towering twin smoke stacks and industrial brick facade.
    Update: Please take extreme caution if you choose to explore any abandoned structure. 18-year-old Anthony Clawson fell to his death on July 31 after dark when a roof panel collapsed under his feet. He fell 50 feet to the base level of the power plant. RIP.

    Chris Luckhardt has documented and photographed some of the most iconic and viral images of abandoned places around the world. He was among the first photographers to publish photos in the press from legendary abandoned places like Hashima Island, Nara Dreamland, Michigan Central Station, and Six Flags New Orleans. His body of work has led to interviews and collaborations with The White House, Netflix, Ford, GQ China, ABC News, Good Morning America, Scholastic Canada, Yahoo Japan, and many more. In 2016, the Obama administration invited Chris to photograph a private citizen "haunted" tour of The White House.

    NOTE: Please take extreme caution if you choose to explore any abandoned structure. I've been doing this for more than 20 years and still proceed as if every step could be my last one. 18-year-old Anthony Clawson fell to his death on July 31 after dark when a roof panel collapsed under his feet. He fell 50 feet to the base level of the power plant. RIP Anthony.

    I used to go up there pretty often. Was completely blown away the first time. It took numerous visits before I knew my way around the place, it's massive and has a lot of nooks and crannies. I was surprised to NOT see a bunch of homeless people, rats and used syringes. Well, those days are over. The last few times I went up there, it was taken over by sketchy people (meth). Spent much time there exploring, tripping and just having fun. The ultimate adult play house. They have shot films and held raves there. I always made sure to leave before it got dark because there are spots that are not safe. A young man (18) was there with friends a few days ago and made the fatal mistake of staying too late. He fell 5 stories to his death.

      Thanks for sharing your insights - it's great to hear the local perspective on a location I've explored. A few people informed me of Anthony's unfortunate death, RIP. I've explored other closed/abandoned power plants around the world and would say Market Street is the most dangerous.

    Man this place looks sketchy on some many levels, love the room with the 2 turbines. nicely edited man,

      It was quite a labyrinth! Its early design was certainly improved upon in later power plants just in the greater access and openness of walkways alone.

    There is amazing beauty in all that riveting, and that old handrail system… Labor was cheap back then

      The engineering behind these power plants was like wiring up a human brain.

    an odd comment I'm sure, but I'm running a TTRPG campaign where this is the setting. you have no idea how helpful having a walkthrough like this is to making a map!! thanks so much & glad you're safe!!

    (I have to say, this video did mess with me due to my fear of heights. It just didn’t look safe.)

      Thanks, Jennifer! Have to be cautious exploring these power plants!

    When the Proper People set off the alarm, I think it was there to deter people from falling. Boilers and machinery were removed when a plant shuts down, leaving large holes and rusted panels behind in the plant, leaving a dangerous fall hazard.
    Or the alarms just deter tresspassers

    • @chrisluckhardt
      @chrisluckhardt  Před 9 měsíci

      Most alarms are to keep trespassers out for liability reasons. I went there in 2011 and we triggered alarms including a huge bank of lighting. Turns out a film shoot was happening! We ducked out of there and just missed security rolling in.

    this video is stunning but it was very difficult to watch as a young man fell to his death there today. i knew you didn't have an accident but it was still nerve wracking to watch you navigate the space. i'm glad your experience was safe and thanks for the video. we have your beautiful video documenting the space now so i hope they make it inaccessible right away.

      Thank you for the well wishes. I heard about Anthony‘s tragic death earlier today. I’ve explored several abandoned power plants dating back to 2008 and I feel this one is the most dangerous. Sadly, a similar tragedy happened in Toronto’s Hearn Generating Station power plant in 2008 - Ryan Nyenhuis fell to his death. I hope Anthony didn’t feel much pain.

    The market street power plant is alleged to be haunted, and there are stories about poltergeist activity and unpowered machinery kicking on by itself.

    • @chrisluckhardt
      @chrisluckhardt  Před rokem

      I explored the power plant in 2016 and 2022. My guess, based on my experience, is the noises were coming from drug users and homeless who occupying the space. (I’ve been exploring abandoned places around the world for more than 20 years and haven’t seen or heard anything ghostly.)
