A cappella arranging: "Soldier" by Connor Roff | Choir With Knut

When arranging songs for artists it's important to meet their demands for the content of the arrangements as far as possible, and this is called "working to brief". In this episode I'll be arranging "Soldier", a song by British-Canadian folk/indie singer-songwriter Connor Roff, for four part choir with a lead singer, and making sure the arrangement works according to the specifications! In your example at 10:56 you still have parallel fifths between the bass and soprano so not a very good showcase of an example without them 😅 I mean they are most emphasised in the outer voice pair (SB) compared with inner voice pairs, even if you're talking here about the SA. The outer voice pair should be all kosher with its counterpoint, at least in my eyes. They're the voices we are most drawn to and the most contrapuntally relevant until you start introducing imitative counterpoint in every voice like, say, a fugue.

    Are you familiar with Libera? Best boy choir in the world, and their use of descants is a key part of the "Libera sound". They use them a lot in almost every song, Christmas carol or not - and not just at the very end. Usually it's just one kid singing the descant part, not an entire soprano section. You might not even notice it if you aren't paying attention, but it really adds to the arrangement. Here's a sampler. Descant starts after the first verse. czcams.com/video/_Idykp3x0dg/video.html

      @KnutsMusic Před 5 měsíci

      Hi! Thank you very much 🙂 I do have a degree in music, which definitely helped me make the arrangement, though I wouldn't say that a degree is essential for doing arrangements like this one (though it of course helps!). The real useful studies is having done lots and lots of arrangements over the years, many of which didn't turn out so good 😅 But if you pick up some music theory and understand the instruments (voices) you're writing for, you can get a long way! Trying out different ways of making the arrangement to see which one works best for you is also important, and that may take a while if you're just starting out. Just remember that you don't HAVE to do things using notation, for example, if this doesn't work for you 😉

    • @KnutsMusic
      @KnutsMusic Před 11 měsíci

      Hi! Do you mean picking a song from a theatre piece/musical for a choir to perform in a concert setting? Or picking existing music to use in a new play? For the former, a lot of theatre music is quite closely tied to the plot and may not work as well out of context, so I'd think about either picking music which can stand well on its own, or how it could be put into context. If the choir singers are up for some acting this may work quite well, but not all singers will be! It may also be necessary to change a few lyrics to make the music stand on its own. I've not done the latter myself, though I imagine it'll come down to what the song is supposed to "do" in the plot; i.e. does the song communicate a character's motivations/thoughts, does it further the story in another way such as advancing time or establish setting; such things. Concert music is often self-contained and can stand alone, but I think good theatre music needs to fit into the whole of the narrative. I can find jukebox musicals a little annoying for this reason, since they're trying to shoehorn a set of songs into narratives which they weren't written for. But, on the other hand, a well placed song can be very effective when done right; how "Both Sides Now" by Joni Mitchell was used in Love Actually is a pretty good example of this, I think (a film, not a theatre piece, but still). Hope that's a little helpful!

    Now, I work within the classical music tradition, but one thing I have noticed is that lots and lots of arrangers double the choir in a choral like style for piano. This is also common in small Christian congregations where all people sing the same voice. While it is perfectly fine to double the voices including the melody on the piano what you should avoid on the piano in my opinion is the choral like hammering of chords since that is not really idiomatic for piano, but is more suitable for organ where the tones can be sustainained indefinitely. Try to use ornaments, arpeggios and accompainmant figures in a lighter way and make sure the piano part lives its own life even when just dubbling and it will sound much better and a lot more pianistic. Remember that you never press down the keys when playing the piano - you strike them gently!

    • @KnutsMusic
      @KnutsMusic Před 11 měsíci

      Yes, this is definitely true; a piano reduction like you describe is useful while rehearing chorales, but the piano is indeed more of a percussive instrument and may not sound the best if doubling the sung parts exactly! I think that good accompanists will adjust the accompaniment to be more suitable for the piano if presented with sheet music like you describe, but it's definitely best to write the accompaniment FOR the piano rather than just double the sung parts! 🙂

  • @unboundboundarie211

    Important to note that 3rds used to be considered dissonant because the tuning system was different which indeed made the third sound more dissonant.

    wait, but what about the parallel fifths between the soprano and the bass? 10:57

    • @KnutsMusic
      @KnutsMusic Před 11 měsíci

      Hi Greg! The intervals between the soprano and the bass are "compound fifths", i.e. an octave and a fifth rather than just a fifth. In isolation they do sound like parallel moving fifths, though here there are other notes in between the soprano and bass which make this effect less pronounced. People will have differing opinions when it comes to parallel fifths with other notes in between them; I personally don't mind so much, since I don't think the fifths "stick out" as much as they do when there are no other notes between them, but some people may. So, much like when parallel fifths are used in isolation, it's a matter of taste and style. Though, to be honest, I probably could've written a better example here, so there wouldn't be moving fifths of any kind, just for the sake of illustrating the difference. If I ever revisit this topic I'll do this!
