  • Though microphones have only been around for just over a hundred years, they're ubiquitous these days, and especially important for musicians. In today's episode we talk about microphones: what they are, how they're useful for musicians, and what kind of challenges they carry.
Scandi Pitches is Knut and Therese, a Norwegian and a Swede who moved to London to study music separately, but met through and bonded over their love for singing and choral music. In this podcast style series, they discuss various singing, choir and music related topics, bringing with them their professional expertise, and Scandinavian sensibilities!

Everytime I walk in to a venue (for a choral performance) and see a drum kit on the stage I expect the worst. I find that there is never enough time with the sound engineer to really make things work.

Yes, it's a shame, but getting a mic'ed-up drum kit sounding good in a live situation takes a lot of care from the sound engineer. On occasion I've wondered if perhaps having the drum kit unamplified would have been the better choice; after all, a lot of the equipment in a drum kit predates microphones and was designed to work without them!
