I think personally that we should just sing songs and interpret them, crossing genres and agree we like it or don’t like it. Personal taste rather than opinionated. For instance I sing Who Wants to Live Forever with a light operatic style and it’s generally loved. It is all about taste and fashion in music. Kate Bush broke all bounds in the 70’s. She just sang with her own voice. Any great singer is remembered by the unique voice they have whether it’s Maria Callas who allowed her voice to crack with emotion or Biork who in a way does the same but writing her own music changes up her style and I love her for it.
