I just picked one of these. At this price point I was expecting to have an igniter, or the option to add it. Looks like it isn’t available as an option.
Marie for the win AGAIN!! Nice shot!
@@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101 - thanks !☺️
Wow! Great line handling skills Marie, that throw for the port springline was nothing short of impressive!! And Ron, the way you handle a 17 ton single 120hp engine trawler without a stern OR bow thruster is amazing. Nice teamwork!!
@@JohnDoe-gj8pm - thank you so much for the compliments!!
That wasn't a fiasco. Nice job docking, and some excellent line handling by Marie! She could be a cowgirl with those lasso skills.
@@tiatauscher1303 - Thanks! I think Marie is one of the best line handlers on the water. But don’t tell her that. We don’t want her getting a big head. 😂
That was a nice job docking. Not a fiasco at all in that strong current. Got it on the second try. That dinghy should have moved up to the head of the dock.
@@bradhines8689 - Thanks! I was a little concerned about saying the dinghy was in my way so I’m glad other boaters understood. Had he been at the head of the dock as you pointed out, I could have just come bow in right along side the dock which would have kept the current from turning me.
You guys are doing such a great job. I’ve learned some valuable information and tips from you and really enjoyed your stories. Thanks for doing what you’re doing. You’re braver than me.
@@jeheydt5boys - not sure about the bravery part - we think we are not smart enough to be cautious 😂 But thank you for the compliment - it warms our hearts to know we are helping
Btw we live on a Defever 48 and you were recommended by the Defever Owners Group
@@jeheydt5boys - awesome!! We appreciate their recommendation and your support. Maybe we will meet up at a future DeFever Rendezvous. Go DeFevers !!

@@CruisingThisOldBoat the only time I’m on a boat is when I’m with Dominic and Tammy
@@Vance-ik9ck - we were discussing that after I answered. We weren’t sure if you had a boat or not. Have you seen Dominic lately? I think he’s up in that area.
@@CruisingThisOldBoat he’s on the Erie Canal now. Weather permitting. I’m going with him and Tammy next week.
@@Vance-ik9ck - Cool ! Tell him we said hi. We miss hanging out with all you guys. You planning a trip down to the keys this winter?
I only have docking problems like that when there are 15-20 people watching.
@@charlesdavenport2543 😂😂😂 - so true!!! The difficulty of docking is directly correlated to the number of people watching!
Break out another thousand get a bimini for dinghy........
@@doncritzer2798 😂😂 - we’ve thought about it but it’s not high enough on our priority list to justify the expense - maybe after a few more days like this 😉
nice video :) how strong ( Ah ) must be the battery for starting the generator, i have 4kw generator ? thanks
Thank you for watching! I can’t say how large the battery must be but I have been using the same Duracell SL34M AGM since I first installed the generator and have never had a problem with it. The battery is dedicated to starting the generator and is recharged by the generator. It is not hooked up to a battery charger.
We are in Vero beach now, heading to wait out hurricane season in Jacksonville, safe travels and we hope to see you in our travels.
Veto is a great place! Are going to one of the marina on the Ortega in Jacksonville? Stay safe from those hurricanes and hopefully we will see you after the season ends.
I'm here at st Augustine they are booked sold for 4th of July week, hope you got a slip, good luck
Nice time Family week 👍
Definitely! It’s always nice to have family along and the gardens were spectacular!
He wants to know why you keep calling him Gilligan 😅😂😅
😂😂
Just watched this episode for the first time. I had the chuckle because i had the same problem on my DeFever 40, drove me crazy to always have a wet center bilge. Did the same "upgrade" you did several years ago by creating a foward, middle and rear sump areas for the bilge pumps. Still a mystery how the water gets in, but at least the bilge is dry! Nice work!
Thanks - I still think the best way to make the bilge drier is to cut a 3” deep well just big enough to put the bilge pump into. Then it would drain everything in the bilge except for the 2.5 inches in that well. But I’m afraid to cut a whole in the bottom of the boat. I’m not sure how wide the keel is at that point.
BTW. - I wouldn’t mind some pics of your setup if it is keeping things dry - mine improved the problem but did not solve it
Save money buy M. acid mix with water and save lots of money.
Interesting - I’ll have to try that
We are heading to summer in Jacksonville
Great place to hang out !
Why not use a roller?
No reason you couldn’t. 😁
low 90s for the next week here at St Augustine, I go on a mooring ball this weekend........hope it's not too hot where you are at, stay cool
We are also in the low 90’s. We have a/c right now because we pulled in to a marina to access West Marine. Hoping to have our solar panels up and running today. We pull out tomorrow so then we will start feeling the heat 😉
@@CruisingThisOldBoat I bought a 3600 watt, 30 amp generator with an RV plug, and an adapter plug to my shore power cable, that was less than 500 bucks and waiting for a 500 watt wind generator, solar was too costly for 500 watts, my 9 amp 10,000 btu air cools off the main cabin really good. I still need to order a bigger water tank
@@krautAmerican - looks like you plan to live in comfort 😉 I just got my 1200 watt solar array working - can’t wait till tomorrow to see what sun does to it 😁
Hey Ron, love your videos and as I've mentioned, my wife and I are planning to copy-cat you by moving aboard our 45 year old DeFever 40 and living the trawler life in the Caribbean. Would really enjoy a video on your monthly spend and budget if you would be comfortable sharing. Would also like to know how often you're at anchor or marinas. Super glad the bees helped the RA.
We actually have been tracking our expenses since we began our current trip on March 2 so we should be able to put out something soon. We anchor out way more often than we stay at marinas to keep our costs down. In a 5 month period in spring of 2023 we only stayed in a marina twice. Once for 3 days to check in at Bimini and the second time for 2 weeks at the same marina in Bimini because we broke down and then had to wait for a weather window. But we do take full advantage of free docks! When are you planning to begin your trip ?
Our plan is to leave Tampa in two years or less. The major hurdle is preparing the boat as she needs some high $$ items included a new Phasor generator, AC replacement, new tender like yours, watermaker, and dripless shaft seals. Around $25k to $30k worth of upgrades. Our plan is to cruise to each country and stay the length of our visa, then move to another country. Right now my plan is to budget $1,500/mo for either fuel or marina fees. Knowing if that's reasonable, as we'll be on a budget, and the rest of your expenses would be invaluable. My boat is the previous generation of the 40 Defever to yours and has twin Lehman's burning 5 gallons/hr at 8+ knots.
You and Marie have been a real inspiration to us and helped us make the decision to follow in your footsteps.
@@JohnDoe-gj8pm - I’ll try to put something together for you in the next few days showing what we have spent so far on this trip.
@@JohnDoe-gj8pm we are glad our videos have helped. Maybe we will meet up somewhere along the way.
Get the real thing: Muratic acid!
I’m guessing the main ingredient is oxalic acid. Buy the powder and mix your own.
I looked all over the bottle to find the main ingredient and couldn’t find any listing of ingredients so I actually don’t know what the main ingredient is. ☹️
@@CruisingThisOldBoat You can get a bag of acid for probably less than you paid for one bottle and make a whole case of them with the powder. You spray it on and the rust will disappear. Works on buildings stained by sprinklers also. Saves a lot of money. You should be able to find several videos here explaining it! Nice boat by the way!
@@tcbink - thanks ! And thanks for the info. I will look for that.
get you one of those pump up sprayers...thx.
That would make it easier !
Who did the countertop, it looks great!
Thanks ! We had a company in Brunswick, Ga install the countertops.
I wonder how that affects the wax, or fiberglass? Reminds me of the slow version of the movie Alien!
😂😂 It claims it does not affect fiberglass and I have never noticed anything. I can’t speak to wax as it has probably been 40 years since Elixir saw any wax. 😉
Seeing that cropduster reminded me of my days in South Georgia.
Yep - they do a lot of that in South Georgia
Ever try krill oil? Mega Red? May be easier to catch than bees and less pain? lol
@@seanjohns4057 - I have not - guess I’ll have to look into that - thanks!
Shalom Ron & Marie Awesome Product worked very good I wonder what it would do for a Anchor Chain that looks rusty
That’s a good question - guess I’ll have to try it and find out !
@@CruisingThisOldBoat Shalom Yes please do try it I'd love to see the Results so would many of us other Cruising Friends This was a awesome video thank you for doing it This stuff really brightness up your Yacht I'll have to get me a Gallon of it
Those ICW cruise liner boats use that, they tie a paint brush to mop handle applied it that way.i saw them do it every time they docked
Interesting - I may try that
Step one, change the bracket, step two, clean. 😂
Good plan !
I'm going to have to try some of that. How did you like Carrabelle?
I really liked Carrabelle - if you were going to live on your boat and stay put, it would be a great town to stay in!
I use a product called FSR - fibreglass stain remover on rust spots on my boat. Works well, but the Power one looks equally good. On a side note, I’d be sourcing a stainless replacement for that bracket in a hurry… I’d get tired of cleaning up the rust pretty quickly. 😁
I don’t claim that Power One works better than everything else - just that it works. I haven’t tried everything else. So thanks for the tip on FSR. I agree with your side note. I have been trying to figure out a solution. I have two problems - 1) the winch mounts from the bottom so you can’t just use a sheet of stainless. 2) I can’t afford to have a bracket fabricated in stainless. I’m open to suggestions from anyone!! 😂😂
I've used On&Off by Mary kate with great results. Makes the rest of the hull look dirty so you've got to clean it all.
That’s always the bad thing about cleaning - that’s why I tell Marie I shouldn’t do it 😉
Thank you soo much, we have been looking for something like this forever! ❤
Hope it helps you as much as it has helped us !
@@CruisingThisOldBoat me too. We've tried everything and nothing works

Welcome aboard!! We appreciate you watching our videos. Absolutely! We would love to meet you while we are in Oklahoma.
Was is gunk in the fuel tank ?
Unfortunately yes - we really need our tanks cleaned out as they have a lot of yucky stuff in the bottom but there is no access port so it will be a major job. ☹️
❤❤Glad to see this and that you two are doing well.
Thanks ! And we appreciate you watching!
You have to like this lady. She always manages to do whatever is necessary.
I agree!!
Hairy time indeed, engine failure a few yards off a lee shore when it's blowing 20+. Happy the engine started again. BTW when you were leaving Pahokee Marina, were you trying to get off that dock without a bow thruster? I would think a good bow thruster is pretty indispensable for a single-screw powerboat.
Yes - we have no thrusters. Usually I can spring off the dock in the manner I attempted but the wind was so strong it would not let me turn the boat to starboard. I agree that thrusters would be nice but that’s a little out of our budget. 😉
Are the dolphins those pylons?
Oh... yes they are. 😂
Yes - you are correct. A group of pilings is called dolphins although I have no idea why. I’ve tried without success to discover the origin of the name. Perhaps someone here knows.
New subscriber! Love your content.
Thank you - and welcome aboard!!
Is no one going to mention the big foot sighting on the riverbank??
Too funny!! Are you referring to the Big Foot by the swing bridge? I had never noticed it because I was always looking at the bridge. You must have a keen eye for detail. Marie went looking though and she found it. Now where do we claim our reward? Divide it 3 ways?
@@CruisingThisOldBoat yes!!!! He was so funny
What a morning indeed! Marie...take a bow. You are unflappable!
Thank you, but not always. It’s the little things that get to me… just ask Ron!
Marie can now brag about how she got to play with dolphins 😅 😂 😅
Someone told me it’s not bragging if it’s true🐬

Good job! For next time: we use our spare anchor road line for the bow (so there's no knot to undo later) and put out 2 stern lines. One on each corner. One line to hold, the second for insurance. 😃

What type of split pole was that she used to grab the cleat on the dolphin? Do you have a link for one like it? Good job on making the tie ups!
She was using a “Landing Loop”. It comes in real handy especially when trying to catch a piling. You can find them at: seadogboatingsolutions.com/landing-loop.html She also did a product review of it that you can see at: czcams.com/video/m-GNXkf6jDQ/video.htmlsi=7_8onjkjKx5ahRZ3
