    They make a spacer type thing that bolts to the trans shaft to make up for misalignment, west marine etc sells them, they were going to put them on my boat but didn't think it was needed

      I’ve looked at those before but I’m not sure if I have enough space between my prop and rudder to put one in. Maybe I need to take another look.

    The last few videos have me questioning if this lifestyle should be in my future.

      Don’t let it psych you out. Our boat is 46 years old and had not been well taken care of before we got her so this is just when everything gave up. We have also boated her for 10 years already with almost no problems. We have all the problems solved at this point and are getting ready to just have fun for the next 10 years! Also, there are more days that we just sit around relaxing than days that we have a crisis but relaxing with a drink on the fly bridge doesn’t make for interesting videos so don’t take our videos as a balanced view of day to day life on a boat. For all the problems we deal with we would not trade this life for the hectic life we lived on land. At least not while we are still young enough to enjoy it!

    The boat behind you at 9:59 or so looks like the small trawler that a couple built with minimum of anything. Have seen write ups on the boat.

      You are correct ! That’s Jill and Rudy’s boat that they designed and built themselves out of wood. It is very minimalist. They have very little that uses electricity including no chart plotter, relying instead on things that operate for free, like paper charts. They have a small diesel engine that travels slow but uses very little fuel. The low cost of operating their boat is amazing!! They are wonderful people to meet and will bend over backwards to help you. We are impressed that you noticed their boat in the fleeting moment it was in the background!

    So I had 2 bent blades, which wore out cutlass bearing, so both props balanced etc and new cutlass bearings both shafts and hopefully I can head south

      Guess that’s not as bad as it could have been but still not cheap. Hopefully they can do it quickly so you can get out of this cold weather. We are still in Brunswick area for about another week so not too much further south than you.

    • @CruisingThisOldBoat
      @CruisingThisOldBoat  Před 5 měsíci

      Great question! We actually debate that all the time. We both tend towards classic looks which usually means older so we are used to fixing things up. Both of our grandfathers were general contractors so we both grew up building stuff which helps. I would say if money were no object, we would probably buy a newer boat but given our actual economic status, we would definitely buy this boat again rather than not boat at all. Although we work on the boat most every day, we do not work all day so it’s not like we do not have time for fun and relaxation. My motto is that work is what we do when we get bored of relaxing. 😉
      If we had nothing to fix, I think I would get really bored of just watching the birds flying around. I would not recommend a fixer upper to someone who wouldn’t be able to do most of the work themselves.
      Your question got us to thinking and so we are going to make a video of the pros and cons of buying a fixer upper. We can go into a lot more detail that way. Keep your eye out for it to release soon.
      Meanwhile, if you have any specific questions we are happy to help!

      Yes - you can make Brunswick in one day as long as you don’t have tide problems - we are at Frederica Yacht Club but we have a car so if you are in the area we could drive to meet up. Also run you to store if you need. I am currently inland doing a murder trial so may not be there till late Friday night. How long are you staying?
