Registrace 19. 12. 2007
I’m Peter Fritz, a landscape and car photographer living in Melbourne, Australia. I’m also a semi-reformed workaholic who’s learning to enjoy life more. Life is short, after all.
I shot and wrote for car & motorcycle magazines for years - much of it in the 80s & 90s - and have shot landscapes for pleasure for over 40 years.
I share tips and ideas about the subjects I photograph, the cars I drive, and the gear I use. And sometimes life, too.
Subscribe if you can, and don’t forget to live while you're alive. You’ve probably earned it. 🦘

Can you create a whole new career after 40?
If you're over 40 and want a completely new career but can't quit your current one, this video is for you. In it, we discuss finding a passion project that reflects who you are (or want to be) and makes you happy - and then turning that into your next career.
NOTE: This is an edited reboot of an earlier video that I thought needed more work. Thanks to @EwenBell for the insight.

The Hasselblad X2D 100C is a genuine 'grail' camera, and with a price of USD$8,000 for the body alone, it should be. But after using a Canon R5 for the last few years, I found it easy to justify switching to the X2D - and it wasn't the 102 MP sensor that swayed me. I was the same with my 911SC. Paid cash for it, my dream was to own it without having to find monthly repayments which would have spoiled the joy of ownership. Owned it 5 years and loved every minute of my time with it. When I bought it, average price was AU$35,000. Now these 911SCs are over $100,000!
@@keithad6485 Holy sh*t!
I owned a 1980s 911SC for five years, bought it when it was 18 years old. Mileage 140,000. Did 80,000 miles while I owned it. Except for standard servicing costs, only had two repairs - fuel pump replaced. And starter solenoid switch sometimes did not work when the engine was at operating temperature. Starter removed, and solenoid disassembled and cleaned, which corrected the problem. Total non service costs for 5 years - $300. Wonder if modern Porches are similar in longevity of components. Loved every minute of my time with my 911. From a Porsche 911 fan Down Under.
@@keithad6485 That’s a cool story. Thanks, Keith.
@@peterfritzphoto Thanks Peter. I had made up my mind to buy a '78 or later 911 (vastly superior aluminium crank case and power brakes standard) with cash in the bank when I was twenty. At thirty no hope of buying my 911. At the age of 37, opportunity to manufacture for Defence came along. The driving motivation for setting up my Defence engineering business was my frustration at not owning a 911! I later learned frustration with each person's financial situation is the usual reason people start their own businesses! Sure was with me. I could have bought the 911SC from net profit from the first Defence contract. But decided to wait a bit and grow the business. Three years later, I said to myself, this is the year I buy my 911. June that year in my ealry 40s, I was the very proud owner of a red 911 with whale tail and chin spoiler. My mates accused me of having a mid life crisis, I said to them, I always wanted a 911. Gave up trying to convince them otherwise and I said to them, its my mid life crisis and I'm gonna enjoy it! And I did! Got 911 up to 190km/h on Calder straight with the Vic Porsche Club! Wasn't game to run out of brake distance at the end of the straight so did not get to 200. Though in other scenarios, had it above 200 and it felt so solid on the road even at those speeds. Braking was phenominal, at 160km/h hard on the brakes and pulled up no fade, and hands off the steering wheel, pulled up straight! Porsche know how to build cars properly! I will own another aircooled 911 probably a 993 (the last of the aircoolers) but currently have other projects with higher priority such as my new manufacturing business, but owning a 911 again is not the burning aim it was when I was younger (I have achieved that dream). BTW - have a new car project. VW made a car from 2002 - 2016 but did not import them into Australia. VW Phaeton, more luxurious than Mercedes S class. Only found out about them 3 weeks ago! I am looking at importing one of these Phaetons. There are apparently 2 known in Australia. Some came with W12 motor 6.0L! With my new manufacturing business, I am currently researching the feasibility of making a road registered copy of the Thales Hawkei - the new Aussie Army armoured 'landrover'. Gonna take some time to complete the research cos need to know estimated max total cost before making the decision to go ahead. Currently, I estimate a figure of max $150K using existing commercially available drive train components. I expect it will be a lot less, but do know with projects like this one, there is always some blow out in the cost and likelihood of delays. Engineering alone to get it ADR'd is over $15,000. The real Hawkei made in Benidgo, cost the tax payer about $1 Million each. This comment is getting a little long winded so will end my comment here. Thanks for reading my novelette length comment.
@@keithad6485 You're clearly an interesting man, Keith. I was just thinking about the Phaeton a couple of months back myself! A quick search reveals bargain prices in the US, so hopefully you can snare a RHD one from a suitable market. The last iteration of the car looks gorgeous. The 993s are also beautiful. A little pricier, though... The Hawkei is a tough looking machine, that's for sure. You have plenty of exciting things to keep you occupied. Happy to read your novelettes whenever you feel compelled.
@@peterfritzphoto Thank you for your compliment Peter - just following my passions! If you are connected in any way to the Defence industry, you can request an invite to Land Forces Expo at Melbourne Exhibition Centre Sep 11-13 this year. As far as I know, this is the first Defence Expo to take place in Melb. Entry is free. It is likely I will have a booth there displaying my products. Making a decision this week.
@@keithad6485 I'd love to attend, but sadly, I'm not connected to defence in any capacity.
Thank you so much Peter, For about 5 years now I have been photographing community theatre groups and doing events for my friends largely as a hobby . I started doing it for free because I loved it so much and wanted to improve my skills at photography and working with actors was an amazing learning curve. I have studied heaps of CZcams videos and follow a few professional photographers. I now charge a nominal amount for theatre groups except the original theatre group that I initially did and they will always be free. I have also done a couple of weddings. I am 63 years old and work in a totally unsatisfying day job for many years and have been toying with retiring and putting all my effort into my photography. I love love love doing head shots for people and actors and have become very good at lighting and this niche. My friends encourage me every day to quit my day job and follow my passion so I have decided to do exactly that. I have created a brochure and as soon as retire will be cold calling large business in the hope of doing bulk headshot runs as I have done a couple of these already and they are very lucrative and have also had my work, through these companies, displayed on billboards. I cannot wait to retire so I can focus on the last part of my life as a successful photographer. Thank you for your video as it has only helped me affirm my decision to retire and follow my dream - even at my age

Great video, life is not a practice session! At the moment I have just one car that has to do everything, so usually go for hatchbacks, have a GR Corolla (awesome 3 cylinder engine, trick AWD, manual) but would love to own a sports car again and a used Boxster is top of my list. This would mean having two cars, but a small less precious hybrid to take the bad winter weather, commuting, the door dings at my employer's parking lot, etc., would be a good cure for my car OCD issues. Couple of questions, did you consider the older Boxster with the hydraulic steering rather an EPS? The 4 cylinder 718's are less desirable but am thinking Porsche rarely gets it wrong, did you consider a 4 cylinder 718? Is the difference between the S and base Boxster versions a big deal? The new ND3 is intriguing, sounds like they have addressed the "darty" steering and the LSD, but as you say not a very practical car and would like a car that my wife also enjoys (which means good ride qualities). A used BMW M2 Competition with a DCT is also under consideration, an easier car to get fixed in the US, great inline 6, but I think I would still wonder about the Boxster.
@@93455Driver I considered the 987 for a while, but I much preferred the size, look, and interior of the 981. I didn’t want the four because I wanted the flat-six experience. If I get another, it will likely still be the six (GTS 4.0). I drove the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, and even though the engine had more grunt, it surprised me that the difference wasn’t more substantial. The base 981 engine is fabulous - especially with Sport Chrono and the sports exhaust.
@@peterfritzphoto Peter thanks for the response, good points. You can only go so fast (legally) on a road and so not really worried about having the maximum ponies (plus I am no great hot shoe either), so like the idea of the base engine especially if I get to use more of the available rev range more of the time. The used base 718s here in the US are tempting, think I would miss the flat six sound though.
@@93455Driver The sound is glooorious!
Hmm. Fascinating. 59 and rebuilding everything from half way up. Transitioned stills to moving image, flexed the branding experience, re-charged the web skills, harnessed wayfinding design to promote where I live which happens to be Australia’s holiday mecca. @@chriscummins4282 I love a good Godin quote. You’re right about that bloody knife edge. It’s hard, alright. Thanks as always, Chris.
Great video with lots of thought provoking information. My advice would be to ignore almost all of it. If you are into the third or fourth quarter of your working life and have built up some wealth and security don’t blow it on some vanity project. It almost never works, especially if you are new to being self employed. Sure, do it as a sideline. If you are going to do it, make sure you can afford to lose every cent you invest in it. Twice.
Thank you. My view is, if you seek to carve out a niche for yourself in a way that serves others, it's never exclusively a vanity project. Sure, vanity comes into many of our decisions, but if you want to share what you love; or something with which you have significant experience, it has the potential to help others. Whether or not it becomes a financial win or black hole depends on many things I didn't cover here. This video is far from exhaustive; the key key message is that opportunities to reach the world are better than they were 20 years ago. The same issues around motive, risk tolerance, relevance, patience, and market acceptance still apply.
Well said mate 👍

That said flight restrictions etc mean I can realistically bring ONE camera. So this is really a "if it were you ... " situation, what would you bring. :)
@@timothylim7831 It depends on many things - the photography you want to do there, your lens collection, whether weight is an issue, etc. I’ve ordered a little D-Lux 8 as an EDC camera, so if I was really size/weight limited, I’d use that. How are you enjoying the M? I’m becoming very Leica-curious, lately!
@@peterfritzphoto Thanks for feedback. I have had the Leica several years now and love the natural colours. Very good for scenery. That said, I only have the M10 but am so happy with it, I have seen no reason to upgrade/upgrade to an M11. In many ways I feel it is actually better than the Hasselblads for this purpose. Hasselblads I feel are more serious commercial/industrial cameras. i started with an H4D 35 and then got the X1D2 for portability before moving on to the current X2D. I do a lot of Macro photography but all as a hobby ie I dont publish.
@@timothylim7831 Yes, I suspect the Leica would feel more intimate, whilst the Hasselblad feels kind of serious and industrial. I love the X2D far more than I ever did my Canons, Nikons or Fujifilms. But I suspect I would bond even more with a compact or rangefinder Leica. What lens/es do you use with your M10?
@@peterfritzphoto Yes I agree with you in using the word "intimate" to describe the Leica. Its a camera I would take anywhere and everywhere without a second thought ie just pick up and go. The Hasselblads need a little "planning" Funnily enough, whilst that is the case, I have had many come up to me all over and say "Wow ! Leica, nice !", something I would have deemed inconspicuous, whereas no one bats an eye when i take/took any of the Hasselblads in all my outings. Anyway for the Leica, I currently use a Summicron 35 F1:2 as my primary lens and a Summicron 75 F2. I have been contemplating 2 other lenses, a Macro Elmar 90 f4 and a Noctilux 50 F0.95 - the latter, even second hand its rather hard to justify but you can always dream.
You are a car man so you will understand this comparison. Hasselblad vs Leica Lamborghini vs Ferrari
You dont want to pony up money for apple carplay…. But Eibach springs and roll bar?? 😊 GREAT video btw
@@dieterjoseph8569 It’s not the cost of CarPlay that bothers me, but rather opening the system and adding stuff to it. As for the stupid Eibachs, they’ve been replaced by Ohlins coilovers, as I should have done in the first place.

Porsches are overpriced given that they're not rare
LOL. My turds are rare - how much will you pay?
@@peterfritzphoto on the contrary, turds are common, very very common, just like these mass produced Porsches. Nothing special except to fanboys who don't know any better.
@@s.gharavi1614 My turds are very unique, so I imagine they must be worth a lot. And because I drive a Porsche, they're probably even more desirable.

Thanks Peter, love the videos, I need to replace my battery. You mentioned $200 odd for one. I couldn’t find one for under $435. Which battery did you get please. Many Thanks Rob

Huge vignetting is still a problem regardless of the ability to compensate for it, it will introduce noise at the image edges.
@@aron2922 Not from my experience.
5:03 “its so capable , its soulless” this really hit. im a xennial and vividly remember my first dslr … just the simple fact you could immediately delete photos you didnt like somehow distracted me from finding those singular moments.
I really enjoyed your video and how you are an artist enjoying the craft. In a world over filled with “my camera is faster” or “my camera has more MP”, I was so taken with the insight you shared. It’s about the passion to create art and the satisfaction that you can trust your tool to render what your mind’s eye is seeing before you push the shutter. Thank you sir for inspiring other artists with your art.

Not that i’m an aspiring photographer but nonetheless you have inspired me in many ways. Our lives have certain parallels and i’ve found myself with deep regrets at some of the decisions i have made but what you have is an admirable quality, not regretting or reflecting but getting up off the floor and making something from what you do have. Hats off Peter

Just found your channel, so glad I did! Loving the simplistic approach and experience you are able to transfer to the audience. Some fantastic shots as well as video!

Thank you for this video, I'm 27, from North NSW, was in the exact same position, casually drinking shiraz. I've considered quitting many times, due to 'next day fog'. I just ordered the book. As you said, the drinking doesn't align with the personal values that I hold for myself, the highest of which is health. Thanks again for the fatherly and inspiring advice 💪🏼
What do you think of the X1D II? I'm considering to buy it and skip the X2D for a later model further in the future. I can buy a refurbished X1DII with warranty for around 3k € here.
@@der.kommentierende.komment5275 I’m afraid I can’t comment on that. I haven’t tried the earlier models.
Really cool shots. Well done. I also liked the video of your son jumping. How fun!

Some lovely landscapes there. The wider shots are my faves :)
Thanks, Ewen. I hardly ever shoot wide, but your recent videos have caused me to rethink all that.
Top class video story and phots there Peter . Thanks for doing that : ) great !
Thank you, Chris!
Pater, are you using a lens adapter on that X2d, or am I mis-seeing it? If you are, where are you getting them please?
Yes, and they're both mentioned (and shown) in the video. You can also see them in my separate X2D review video. I bought both the Fotodiox and Novoflex adapters from their respective websites.

Loved the video and the challenge. Gorgeous photos and a beautiful family. Queenstown is such a stunning place. I didn't want to leave. Thank you for sharing.
@@johnbentley1056 Many thanks, John. I felt the same way about Queenstown. I reckon I could spend months there and never get bored with the scenery.
After using Hasselblad 500CM camera's, 4x5 to 8x10 and bigger format camera's i wanted a digital camera so i would have to spend less time in the darkroom handling chemicals (wich I still do but only for wetplate). But at the same time i wanted the quality i was used to have and that would not give me limitations on quality and image detail. So i looked at Hasselblad X2D and fell in love. Every reason for buying this camera has been mentioned by you. It is a camera without compromise. The lenses are fabulous and indeed the colors, sharpness, bokeh, low light capabilities and IBIS... There is nothing that rivals it... If you are willing to slow down that is. I dud have an issues though with a badly performing touch screen wich was replaced by Hasselblad. And since then it's been nothing but fenomenal. For me this will probably be the last digital camera i will ever buy. And I'm happy with it. Great review that reflects exactly my thoughts.
@@gdv174 Thank you for such an interesting and generous comment. If you don’t mind sharing, what issue did you experience with the screen?
@@peterfritzphoto Hi Peter, well in general the touch screen was often unresponsive. Also the camera reacted erratic when i wanted to use the menusystem. When swiping through images i made suddenly it would not react. When looking through the viefinder and operating the focuspoint it did not respond or suddenly it would start to zoom in/out and after that my focal point indicator would have changed fro small to large. Just very annoying behavior wich could onky be stopped by turning the camera off and on. I mentioned these issues to Hasselblad and they said it would be taken care of in a firmware update. But the problem only got worce. So finally i was done with it and demanded they wod take the camera in for repair. Also because no where else did i read about such problems i presumed this was something individual with the camera and i do have warrenty. Hasselblad responded very well to this and the camera was picked up by DHL and the next day was in for repair (from Holland to Stockholm in less than a day. And soon i git a message that they had replaced the touchscreen under warrenty. And within a week i had the camera back. And it gas been performing fenomenal ever since. Mind me i walked around with a bafly performing camera for months before i finally had enough of it and demanded they would take it back. But once they decided they would take it back Hasselblad's service was very good. Also the fact is that the quality of the images is so good that i took all the irritatiins with that touchscreen for granted. Until the last firmware update in wich they claimed that certain instability issues would be resolved. Wich it didn't after wich i had enough of it.
@@gdv174 Very good to know - thank you. Mine has been trouble-free, although I have notice some hot pixels on the screen.
@@peterfritzphoto if they are hot pixels when looking at images taken in the dark then this can be solved with recalibration the sensor in the general settings.
