I hope this video helps you quit drinking so you can live the rest of your life free of this senseless source of misery and decay.

    I quit drinking several months ago...and it was Identity that helped. I simply defined myself as someone who did not drink and that was enough to stop. I know a few months is not a huge accomplishment but its a start. Listening to you talk was like hearing my own thought process over the last few months especially about living life while we have it...not dulling the senses. Despite the difficulty of these past few years life is better lived than avoided.

    I had to stop drinking due to an acid reflux condition and the medication I had to take. My Doctor also said I had borderline high blood pressure and pills were in my future. I wasn’t happy about it and for a couple of weeks I really missed it. I really love beer, so I started testing various 0.0% beers. I found a couple I loved and haven’t looked back. Many pubs now stock them. It’s been a year, I lost 10 pounds without really trying, my doctor says my blood pressure is perfect. My friends like it, I’m the designated driver and they didn’t care that I didn’t drink. I also realized how expensive my drinking was. 😊

    ... a subject I could discuss for hours although I believe there are 2 types of drinkers: those that can just have a few and stop and be happy for the remainder of the evening, and those, much like myself, who will will have one which will quickly evolve into many aka drunkenness, e.g. I can stop for months but when I do have a drink I go hard. I never really do anything by halves. ... and subsequently suffer for days on end with a hangover and anxiety with the things I may have said to people. Your video has inspired me to go for a record for my non drinking = 4months. Let's see.

    Thank you Peter. I found your Chanel purely through owning a 981. Then I subscribed. I watched your other video’s, particularly life over 50. That was a fantastic video. Especially point 10. Learn to say ‘No’. Now, this video. This subject really strikes a chord. At 52, I have been looking at ways to stop drinking. Like you, its only ever a few glasses at the weekend and I don’t get drunk, but regardless of that I feel it’s too much. I prefer the version of me that hasn’t had a drink. Good morning Peter, I enjoyed your video. My own journey with alcohol and tobacco started in my mid teens. In my early to mid twenties I was getting drunk 6 nights out 7, I would say that I was an alcoholic. Alcohol got me into trouble, cost me friendships and destroyed my self esteem. There are a few reasons for my alcoholism which I won't go into suffice it to say that the grog helped me deal with it. As I got older I gave up the smokes cold turkey, I got healthier but I still liked the grog too much. While I didn't drink as often as I did previously, when I did drink I would binge. Fast forward a few decades, I still drink but I would have less than 10 drinks a year. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story, I'm sure there are many who can relate to it. All the best,

    I have been on a fence about absolutely quitting my vices. I know that I 100% feel much better when I don't drink/smoke on the following days. It's become easier each time I cut back to turn down the drink or smoke with the social group I hang out with. I'm at the point of just telling people I don't want to drink or smoke anymore. I still value those friendships but I'm 52 and ready to be in the moment as opposed to recovering the next day. I have stopped off and on for different reasons (Having a cold/illness) over the years, I'm hoping that I can find a good network of friends who don't drink/smoke to give me better options to spend my time. I'm encouraged by hearing what you shared here.

    Hi Peter, you and I could have a very long discussion on this subject given my background in road safety and connection decades ago with alcohol treatment services (not for myself) . One thing you didn’t mention is the recent conclusion that there is now no safe level of alcohol consumption. In my 20’s I gave up for a year after a particularly bad experience of over doing it , I gave up for a year when my marriage broke up in my 40’s and would certainly classify myself as and “almost never” drinker these days. However I think you touched on it there is a group that are biologically predisposed to addiction , the amount you said you used to drink wouldn’t even count as an appetizer for that group.

      @revertsui Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks @PETERFRITZPHOTO for responding and your comment on "Self Mastery" made my spine tingle - yet it's such an obvious message. I will passing this on to my kids.
      May, I also add that after dropping drinking, months later I quit caffeine - also for reasons like quitting booze, for headaches but more so, on reflection the desire for "self mastery". I just disliked that I was addicted to a drug, despite all the social benefits and what I believed productivity reasons.
      Overall, for me I believe the health benefits of quitting caffeine were far greater as I was properly addicted to caffeine, unlike booze which was more social or a weekend activity. Quitting caffeine like booze has zero downsides and plenty of upsides, In particular for mental health and anxiety reduction is enormous and I will never ever go back.

      @@peterfritzphoto I was very addicted to caffeine, I had maybe 4 - 6 cups a day. I used coffee as a crutch and a reward, mostly for work. But after decades, it didn't seem to work, I was mentally exhausted and physically unhealthy. After researching how caffeine doesn't give energy but just stresses you out. I cannot help think we are still in the early days understanding the powerful effects of the addictive drug. Like booze, there is huge social pressure to be on it, perhaps even more so.
      Like you, I still drink decaf, and enjoy it. But I "enjoy" it because of years of habit, for me I never go back, its nice not to be addicted to any substance, the freedom reminds me a little of childhood freedom before the "real world" and the "needs" of adulthood came in. :)

    @DontTellMeMore Před 4 měsíci

    I need to qualify my statement. I am Southern European, doing the James Brown thing, living in America, have spent time in Australia and loved it. Never been to a place I did not love. I do not drink "alcohol" but do have a glass of wine or a taste of Burbon often. Everyone in my family does the same and our life expectancy is 100 + or -5. Our "Blue Zone" living has more to do with our attitude towards stress and less about our diet. Stress can drive one to drinking alcohol for a cure of something. I don't have anything that alcohol can cure. Been rubbed with it a few times once upon a time. At 5 years on I was given a taste of wine with every meal. In 2016 Trump should have driven me to drinking alcohol but didn't. I admire what you are doing here. You can follow up this vid with a prequel on how to handle stress. Stress should be the signal that we need to fix something rather than drink something. I am saying this as I am having a taste of Tequila, celebrating your good work and loving life. If I am wrong, shoot me, but please let me finish my drink. Keep up the good work, I hope I was being helpful and this was not a low sodium alphabet soup.

  • @TroySwezey
    @TroySwezey Před 6 měsíci

    Firstly, congratulations on giving up the drink.
    Respectfully, quitting the drinking of alcohol is, or should be, easy if one is not 'addicted' to the alcohol. A couple glasses of wine a few times a week does not an addict make.
    Replace those 2 or 3 glasses of wine with 2 or 3 double vodka martinis chased with a 40-ouncer (1.2L) of 8% lager and do that daily and we have a whole different monster. An alcoholic will drink to feel 'normal' as the body has at this point rejected the feeling of not having those chemicals in the bloodstream. An alcoholic will drink at any time of the day when the pain of not drinking sets in.
    This is where the real danger lies in just giving up the alcohol.
    When a friend helped me to understand that my martini and lager habit had turned into denial and lying, I decided it was time to quit. Just quitting cold turkey, I later found out, is super dangerous in this type of situation. "You are lucky to be alive," a well-known and famous addiction specialist physician once told me.
    I applaud anyone who makes the decision to give up drink but implore they do it safely.

It sounds like a smartass thing to say, but the reality is by simplifying the whole “process” - and what can be simpler than NOT doing something? - I avoided all the bullshit around “I can’t drink coffee/beer cause I might want to smoke, I can’t go to a bar because i might want to drink” etc. YMMV but I found having only ONE thing to think about, and a negation at that, just made it so simple. Not always easy, but simple. Instead of trying to completely change everything (“have to go the gym everyday!”) just change that one thing.

    I´m wondering Peter, what do you drink instead? Non alcoholic beer,?... some are actually damn good. But for a nicer dinner with a steak or fish I find it difficult with alternatives to good red or white wines.

      @peterfritzphoto  Před 8 měsíci

      That’s a good question, Jeremy. You’re right about the zero alcohol beers - some are very good, and for about a month, I drank those every few nights. But now I’m rarely drinking those either. Instead, I drink filtered or mineral water with ginger and lime, or a dash of fresh lemon juice. The ‘need’ for a wine or beer accompaniment with a meal has all but vanished for me.

      One thing I would add, from personal experience. I have done dry January a few times. I found the food itself tasted far better accompanied by water, instead of wine. It almost made up for it in fact. I’m now working on stopping altogether. Not the best time of year to start, but my mindset is if I can do it now, I can do it for good.

      It’s the latter, Brett. Since May this year, I’ve had about 5 glasses of wine. Basically, I don’t keep any alcohol at home anymore, and since I rarely go out for an occasion that calls for a drink, I hardly drink outside the house, either.

      This book has proven itself over many years. It certainly worked for me. Like many things, once you truly understand something's cause, the fix becomes a whole lot easier. I almost never crave alcohol anymore, and I haven't succumbed to buying a bottle once. Ironically, I can go out to lunch and have a glass of wine, drink it over a period of an hour or two, and not feel the urge to drink another until the next lunch a month or two later.

    Hey, I am jealous; You are doing it while I've been loosing faith. Well, by now you know I love to play with words and constants. Of all my crimes, the biggest and my personal favorite is having too much fun in life and sharing, fun at no ones expense, so I'll share, but no, not my Porsche, joking of course. To get this done, I will have to mess with Christ and Conventional Wisdom. Christ always first.
    Nothing will get you in more trouble than twisting the Bible, but I am brave, if not stupid, so I'll give it a try. What does that have to do with drinking you may ask? Stay with me I am sure I'll eventually get to it. "Love one another" they said He said and everyone misinterpreted every word of it. I am sure what He meant was, love yourself and when you get good at it, loving someone else will no longer be just an experiment.
    Conventional Wisdom. "Take a good look at your self" too many keep saying. Rotten advise at the age where our eyes and ears have been trained to deceive us for our own comfort. I am going with "take a good lick at yourself" While many have looked at a turd and called it a strawberry, no one has tasted a turd and called it a strawberry.
    Having done all that, now you can have a drink and even a smoke, to celebrate you and everyone else around you. Be honest with yourself, create someone you can love and everyone else will follow, even if only out of jealousy they may want to do the same. Loving, happy people are infectious, you can spot from miles away. Loving people? Criminals, of crimes some can only dream of. Trump will tell you, you can't build a Shit Empire on happy people.
    Only if Americans could be a little more Australian the world would be a much better place. We went from "the British are coming" to "the Americans are coming" regress, back to The Ugly American, damn, one more thing I cannot drink to. What should be driving to drinking will have me quitting soon. Naaah... Trump is coming, all the happy people, after one drink, will have to move to Canada, if they let us in. I hear though, there is plenty of room and better beer in Australia.
    Ignore it, that's just a Southern European living in-and-out of America talking to himself, confused as to which one of his homes is becoming the 'shithole' Country. Hey, wasn't it Christ who made everyone else have a drink?
