Tulip Tour 🌷
Most of the spring bulbs are long gone, but I wanted to share the tulip tour with you in case you need a few tulips to brighten your day! Planting spring bulbs is a back-breaking task, but as soon as spring rolls around I always thank myself for putting in the time to do it. After a long winter, it is so refreshing to see the bright, cheery colors of spring.

How to Build a Cut Flower Garden 🚜🌺💐
zhlédnutí 42Před měsícem
A couple years ago I asked for some help to build a dedicated cut flower garden. Several factors led to the new flower bed: - I had just been selected as an ambassador for an organization with the goal of spreading kindness through flowers. - We made changes to the layout of the yard and removed an existing flower bed that held cut flowers - I wanted to add a flower bed to the front yard that p...
Planting Asparagus with Machines
zhlédnutí 90Před měsícem
It's one of our favorite spring foods! After saving asparagus seed and starting it late winter it's time to dig a hole and plant the seedlings...with machines. There are about 30 seedlings to plant at a site that will get full sun, a bit of pampering during the first year and tough love after that. First a trench was dug about 18" deep. The soil is pretty good in this location, but we had bette...
Using a Power Broom for Spring Cleaning the Yard
zhlédnutí 859Před 2 měsíci
A definite upgrade to the trusty rake, this power broom makes pretty quick work of all the gravel and debris that makes its way into your yard over the winter. Definitely not a tool that is required for yard maintenance, but it certainly saves a lot of time and backache. I for one, am very thankful that dad helps clean up the ditch so that I can mow it without throwing rocks all summer. A coupl...
Multiplying Your Dahlia Stock - How to Take Cuttings from Dahlias
zhlédnutí 185Před 2 měsíci
This is part 2 of the process to propogate your dahlias. Once the tubers you've settled into soil have sprouted a 2-4" growth, you can take a cutting, or two, or three. I show a couple ways to take the cutting in the video, but let me know your preferred way! Then tuck your cutting into soil and over the next month or two it will develop roots and be ready to grow in your gardens. Detailed inst...
Ranunculus Update: Planting in the Tunnel
zhlédnutí 92Před 3 měsíci
The next step in the 2024 ranunculus journey! They're going in the ground about six weeks after pre-sprouting them. We're planting in zone 4b and this tray is going under a small hoop tunnel. Ranunculus prefer cooler temperatures, so early spring is a great time to get them in the ground. From what I've heard/read they are also heavy feeders and would benefit from fertilizer throughout the seas...
Maple Syrup Season | That's A Wrap
zhlédnutí 243Před 3 měsíci
2024 Maple Syrup Season is in the books. Another short season, but it sure was nice to have a bit less snow to plow through. All of the food, supplies and equipment are taken out of the sugar shack to be stored away during the off season or cleaned. One of the final steps is to take all of the buckets and taps off the trees and clean/sterilize them. Because the sap has a tiny amount of sugar in...
Maple Syrup Season: Collecting and Finishing Syrup
zhlédnutí 249Před 3 měsíci
It's the last day of collecting for the 2024 season. Another short year, but the weather was really quite strange. While the season was short, it was very pleasant to tap the trees and collect when there was hardly any snow on the ground. This is what a typical day of collecting looks like, lots of helping hands, off handed commentary and food. Then on a quieter day, we show you how we finish t...

If you're looking to grow more of the dahlia varieties you love, give propogating a try. It's not hard to do and will save you quite a bit of money. Those darn dahlias can be expensive! How to Get a Better Boil | Cleaning the Syrup Pan
zhlédnutí 311Před 4 měsíci
Here's one of the key ways we find we get a better boil...clean the syrup pan. Tim cleans out the syrup pan every other day to ensure the niter doesn't build up too much. This video shows the process of getting the pans swapped out. The cleaning part is a bit of elbow grease and time. This year was a rough one as far as 'burning' or 'boiling' a bit too much. Whether it was the weather or a dist...
It Smells Like Syrup! Our Boiling Setup
zhlédnutí 621Před 4 měsíci
The sap was being collected, the fire was set, then the boiling can begin. When the wind isn't blowing too hard and the sap is really cooking, it smells like a candy factory in the sugar shack. The MOST Useful Piece of Sugar Shack Equipment
zhlédnutí 638Před 4 měsíci
If you are looking to make your own maple syrup, this is the one piece of equipment that you must get. Well, it might not make the top 5 most useful items, but dad has found it to be useful to store and move wood around when firing the stove. He loads it from either the pile inside or from a load just outside the shack, then he can maneuver it near the stove so the door doesn't stay open longer...
Starting the Flower Season by Presprouting Ranunculus
zhlédnutí 347Před 4 měsíci
If you're looking for a beautiful, showy flower that lasts well in a vase and blooms in early summer for weeks...you need ranunculus. Good news is that getting them started is pretty easy! 1. Soak the corms for 3 hours (I'd recommend 3-4 hours) 2. Add 1-2" of soil to a container 3. Place the soaked corms spikey ends down on top of the soil. If you are going to plant them out or pot them up, you...

So no chance of tapping. The weather was good today but it’s getting cold again tomorrow. The states surrounding Vermont have had good early flows. Some in PA were even 2.5 percent flows. One nice thing when you make charcoal when I made it in a trench or a barrel is if you’re using charcoal for a garden you can just fill the barrel clear full of water or crush it up first into quarter inch sizes and then fill it with water. Add one or two five gallon buckets of chicken manure then let it sit to be inoculated or the charcoal to absorb nutrients and then you can add it tk your garden or in the bottom of the holes before you plant your plants. But ya I’ll have to try your method cause I could use the not completely done stuff for cooking.

Sugar maple gives you 40 gal of sap to 1 gal of syrup. Red maples are closer to 50:1. Still tastes heavenly. I think a bit more rich and flavorful. Birch I'm told is 100:1 and has a minty taste. I haven't done them yet. That'd be a fun little experiment.
