The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner Recap & Review - The Midnight Society
I wonder if any of the writers of the movie Heavyweights later worked on this episode of Are you afraid of the dark, because both movie have a joke about Butts and are about camping.
I looked into this for you and it appears there was no overlap. Heavyweights was written by Judd Apatow and Steven Brill. Manaha was written by Gerald Wexler.
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow I know it wasn't. Just both came out in the same year but months apart. So it was probably more along the lines of just overlapping jokes or ideas or just coincidence. Thanks for the videos. Always entertaining.
I watched this when I was like 5 and was terrified of clowns for years, until I found the episode on youtube as a teenager and realized how silly it was 😂
Salute your shorts!! ❤❤
Ugh it was worse than i remembered... im glad you vetoed the veto and disapproved it. Lol! Great review 👏
Haha, thanks!
OH BOY THIS EPISODE!
I did the drinking game with you. I had to use water because due to medical reasons I can't drink alcohol. It could quite literally kill me.
Hey, don't tell anyone, but I used water too.
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow yeah sure...water *shifty eyes*
I think The Shaman never had the power he claimed... He wasn't powerful on a spiritual level, he merely had enough magic to trick people into seeing things that weren't there, an illusionist so to speak... So when the kid grabbed the statue and things started moving in the forest, he freaked out thinking that somehow, Jonas learned how to truly invoke the spirits of the forest... Something that the Shaman could not do himself. I think the message behind this one is that sometimes what you present to the public eye is more powerful than what truly lies behind the curtain... Almost like a nod to The Wizard of Oz.
I like that read on it. Thank you for sharing it.
interesting.
Low key... This is one of my fav episodes. The atmosphere is really good in this one! The whole "all isn't what it seems" vibe really creeped me out as a kid.
Thanks for another awesome video man. I am glad you let your ruling stand, this episode deserves it. Season 5 as a whole is kind of interesting, because you can tell that this late in the show’s run they are starting to run out of ideas. Even with that being said, this episode introduces some fresh ones just for them to trash it entirely. Very very disappointing
Yeah, this vote was just too close. I couldn't, in good conscience, let it pass.
Once again, the way you would have done this is so much better
Thank you!
I would have loved a Salute Yor Shorts crossover for this one. At bear minimum have the actor that played Budnick as a camper or Lonnie or the actor that played Ug as the ranger.
Danny Cooksey was already in that mummy episode. Maybe they were worried he was too recognizable for multiple roles on this show.
Oh man! Kirk Baily as the Ranger would've been awesome!
Also fun fact: the kid who plays Eddie would go on to play Midnight Society member Andy in seasons 6 and 7.
That kid looks very different four years later. I didn’t even recognize him.
Oh, nice! I look forward to that. I'll be going into seasons 6 and 7 almost completely blind.
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow ok.
I really wanted more comeuppance for Lonnie than just caring the parks. like the shaman pulling him in the cave to be sealed in too.
Oh, that would've been a great end for him! Yeah, Lonnie has made my list of most deplorable AYAOTD characters for sure. I'll be doing a top 10 video on that at some point and it feels like he and Beth, from Lonely Ghost, will be battling it out for the top spot.
Are reviewing saved by the bell ive seen you do the time out like zack does
I plan to do a Mike's Little Look-Backs episode on Saved By The Bell someday. I loved that show as a kid/teen.
Dang it, dude! You had to bring up that dang Muppets song! :S Now it’s stuck in my head. May the ghost of the end theme to “Lamb Chop’s Play-Along” haunt your dreams. All the same, an excellent review of a terrible episode and no Butz for me, I don’t smoke myself. Can’t stand that shit.
Hahaha! The sado-masochist in me wants someone to do one those DJ mashups of "the song that doesn't end" and "mahna mahna."
How to Survive in the Bush by Oscar BUTTS!!!!! Still remember that line to this day. I used it in class and got put in time out for it.
Haha! I guess your teacher just wasn't into the world of survival.
Funny.
Hope your liver's okay after that drinking game! I was one of the votes Against. Being a Canadian show, I get that they were going for a reference to the Wendigo, but it just ended up feeling like a campy knockoff of Stand By Me, if that makes sense. Also, Jonah was played by Michael Yarmush. This would have been right before his biggest role, as the original voice as Arthur Read 😄
Oh wow, it feels like every ATAOTD cast member went on to voice a character on Arthur, but I had no idea he was the titular character.
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow Canadian shows tended to have a lot of crossover, lol
Wait Micheal Yarmush was in a episode of AYAOTD Before Arthur? WHAT A SHOCK!
Another excellent review! You know a story will be bad if it's being told by someone in a gorilla costume. Well, this episode was way worse than I remembered it. Even worse than Prisoner's Past. The story was not great. The concept would've worked but it wasn't used effectively. The characters were not likeable at all. Just not a great episode overall.
Yeah, this episode was one of the biggest wastes of potential. I don't find the idea of Bigfoot or Wendigo scary to begin with and this episode did not do the notion any favors.
Oscar Buttz
The writer was having too much fun making characters say that name.
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow DJ MacHale was one of the two credited writers for this episode.
@@michaelperez9966 He is credited as a writer on all episodes as "Original Creator." Gerald Wexler was the actual writer of the episode.
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow Ok, I wasn’t sure if he was a co-writer for this episode or not. I know DJ did write some episodes, and the credited writer Chloe Brown is actually DJ MacHale. He used Chloe Brown as a pseudonym so Nickelodeon thought there was more female writers.
Oh, Canadia!
It works with the existing national anthem. I say they make the change.

commenting and watching again, because this was a good one!
Thank you!
The goldfish joke.😂😂
I found out the actress who played the protagonist is actually the sister of the actress who played the protagonist in the final episode of are you afraid of the dark which aired in June 2000 I belive.
Nice trivia!
This was Frank last episode. The actor went to college in real life which is why his character was written off.
The fact that this video only had 16 views when I first stumbled on it criminal
It’s a Canadian Italian accent, specifically from Quebec. The actor was from my neck(ha) of the woods.
😂
It wouldn't be so confusing pointing him out in the 60s "IT WAS THE TALL BLACK GUY?" "Black guy? Man that Creech you have IS good this is the 60s in Jim crowe

This is definitely in my top 3 episodes. #1 tale of the Dream girl obviously. You know the top 3 is subject to change, also 😂
They could easily bring this back, doing classics like, Gangsters Paradise, My Milkshake, WAP…
Hahaha! Well, with the recent success of the R-rated Deadpool and Wolverine, I think Disney would be open kids singing such classics.
When u cried at the response XD now thats just good comedy. Keep it up.
