Guilty Gear Strive is a fighting video game developed and published by Arc System Works. It is the seventh mainline installment of the Guilty Gear series and the 25th overall. The game was released worldwide on June 11, 2021. It uses Unreal Engine 4. Intended as a "complete reconstruction of the franchise", Guilty Gear Strive retains the core essence of the series but revamps many features and mechanics, except for the removal of the series’ signature mechanic, the Instant Kill. It introduces the "Wall Break" feature, which allows for stage transitions when a combo is initiated in the corner of the arena. Guilty Gear Strive was released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Windows on June 11, 2021. It was also distributed via Sega to Japanese arcades on July 29, 2021. "Limited Edition" and "Ultimate Edition" editions were made available for pre-order; console players who get the latter received early access to the full game on June 8, 2021.
Brawlhalla is a free-to-play 2D platformer fighting game developed by Blue Mammoth Games and Ubisoft for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Steam, iOS, and Android, with full cross-play across all platforms. It also has some of the most satisfying combo mechanics of any fighting game I've played, because doing successful low damage to kill combos is extremely hard. You have to either 100% know where your opponent is going or just make up some wacky play and hope for the best. It makes the kills all the more exciting. Brawlhalla has reached OVER 1 million in esports prize pools this year and over 50 million online players in total.
Soulcalibur (ソウルキャリバー, Sōrukyaribā) is a weapon-based fighting game franchise developed by Bandai Namco Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. There are total of seven main installments and various media spin-offs, including music albums and a series of manga books in the Soulcalibur series. The first game in the series, Soul Edge (or Soul Blade outside Japan), was released as an arcade game in 1995 and was later ported to consoles; the widespread success of its second main installment Soulcalibur in 1998 led to Soulcalibur becoming the name of the franchise, with all subsequent installments also using the name onwards. More recent games in the series have been released for consoles only and have evolved to include online playing modes.
BlazBlue is a fighting video game series developed and published in Japan by Arc System Works and later localized in North America by Aksys Games and in Europe by Zen United. An anime adaptation aired in autumn 2013. The game series has sold 1.7 million games in August 2012.

    My friend recently got me into Guilty Gear Strive. He's a fighting game player, and along with a few others-- I was getting my ass handed to me all the time, as I just don't play a lot of fighting games. I was also testing characters and trying to find something I could both understand and use well. Then I picked May. I may have still been getting curb-stomped still, but I finally started learning how inputs worked and started getting a few wins and close matches. Since then I've been a hard-core May player, and picked up some nasty combinations that had my friends very confused. Except for one guy. Shout out to Vigs-- Bro reads us all like books. Knows my move before I even think it. Literally predicts our move choices before we begin inputs. Bro was helping me in a call and was calling out moves and plays with something I can only describe as precognition.

    I think ppl forget that iteration is a part of animation. And trying things out with sprites is really expensive, both in time and money. Having said that, Strive I believe achieves the best of both worlds. Too bad only Arc Systems can do that shit.

    the rise of stylized 3D graphics is something I was looking to for a while now. in the earlier days of 3D it was like using smears, multiples, and other techniques was "done because of hardware limitation" instead of just looking better and being more intuitive because our eyes don't see in frames.

    These are all valid points, but before 3D was possible, *every* fighting game was drawn. Drawn animation is generally more expensive, but we have countless examples of fighting games being made despite that being more expensive, at a time when the playerbase for fighting games was much smaller than it is now. The main reason it's not around now is not primarily technoligical or labor related; it's taste, unfortunately. Disney is a great example of this. Princess and the Frog was their final drawn animated movie because it did so poorly despite being both a good movie and looking beautiful. People who vastly prefer drawn animation (which does include me) are loud, but a minority. To most of a fighting game's audience, drawn animation will seem less appealing than 3D animation. We've had a recent revolution in 3D animation mimicking the feel of 2D animation (Spiderverse, recent ArcSys games, the new TMNT movie, The Last Wish), and by no means is this animation style cheap, but it still has many technological advantages over purely drawn animation

    One game that maaaybe you could try talking about in these videos is a mobile game called Shadow Fight: Arena? Has a roster of different characters all wielding different weapons and movesets and one of the has indeed a greatsword that matches what you said here, wide but slow high damaging attacks. Believe me it may be a mobile game but I think it's very good.

    Hard to swallow pill: Street Fighter has looked like trash for twice as long (08-24, 16 years) as it looked amazing (91-99, 8 years). Guilty Gear discovered the secret formula a long while ago; Capcom has no excuse why the flagship fighting game is the worst looking AAA fighting game on the market today.

    Ik that the video speaks from a fighting game perspective, but to me the best example of a glass-cannon is the Magic-User from Shadow over Mystara. You get access to a lot of spells, most of which are AoE (Fireball, Reverse Gravity, Ice Storm) or multi hit (Magic Missile, Lightning Bolt, Flesh to Stone). But you have little to no access to any defensive equipment/spells; you get a short teleport for your backdash and Projected Image, which makes 3 copies of yourself for a short time, and can't equip shields or armor (the only bit of armor you can use is a helmet). On top of that, Magic-User has the lowest HP pool of the game and can't get any weapons until mid to late game since you're limited to staffs. Plus the damage for them is... Bad, to say the least. Although, there is an attack you can make that has a chance of paralysing enemies for a short period, which has a short melee range. Anyway, thank you for listening to my ted talk

    AKA every single character in UNIB. Big Weapon Character Starter Kit: Big range, extended hitbox on a lot of moves but really pathetic stumpy range on others in key areas to create highs and lows in neutral. Meaty, nasty punish moves that cover half of the screen but have huge penalties on block or whiff. Humongord crazy damage on even basic strings, but low HP and vulnerable to blockstrings and being rushed down themselves. Anti-Air has some whacky and very precise unreliable hitbox even though they could probably just swing their weapon in an arc, but they won't. Guard breaks/unblockables out the ass. Move that looks like it should have hyper armor/guard frames but it doesn't. Move that looks like it shouldn't have hyper armor/guard frames but it does. Your walk speed and backdash is really bad but your sprint/forward dash is good. Tiny, stubby little low kick that's somehow the most important move in their entire kit. Surprise command grab that comes out of nowhere and does more work than most grapplers. Charge inputs/charged inputs. Self-damage gimmicks.

    We also gotta remember that games and hardware and more importantly the general audience want high resolution. The 720/1080p of last decade does not suffice as the standard. The higher the resolution the more pixels their are to manipulate and adjust. Same goes for 3d models, what once was a few hundred pixels has turned into thousands for a single appendage. Add onto that the file size of 4k resolution and you now have a more time consuming, nore expensive, less friendly product

    When it comes to 2D fighters I prefer 2D animation. The company French Bread still regularly makes very high quality 2D animation for their games and they use 3D backgrounds. I love their work and Reall I believe the main reason for the move away from 2D had more to do with cosmetics than expense. 2D animation isn't necessarily more expensive but it does take a more focused skill as 2D animation is not the easiest. Guilty Gear or anything modern Ark Sys does besides Blaz blue is great but it doesn't scratch the 2D itch I have when I see it. I also don't always agree all older 3D fighting games look bad. PS1 and N64 yes but some games like DoA 3 and 2U have aged pretty well visually

    This makes me wonder if adopting a Ninja Turtles style approach can help you improve at fighting games. Let me explain: There is a theory that in TMNT, Master Splinter gave each turtle a weapon that was the opposite of their personalities. For Leo, the most pacifistic one, he gave the deadliest weapon. For Raph, the most aggressive one, he gave the smallest, most defensive weapon. For Mikey, the craziest one, he gave the weapon that required the most control. And for Donnie, the smartest one, he gave the simplest, least complex weapon. The idea is that he gave them these weapons to help them overcome their weaknesses and turn them into their strengths. Basically, I’m wondering if picking up a character that exaggerates your flaws as a player can help you become more well-rounded. Will picking up a glass cannon as a player who tends to be more defensive and less aggressive help force you to figure out how to overcome that and learn how to be a more aggressive player? Or if you’re already a crazy glass cannon player at heart, will picking up a slower, defensive character force you to learn how to slow down when needed?

    @3:49 you talk about how every frame in between key poses is interpolated and this is seen as a bad thing, but that's not entirely how it works, you have the control as an animator when you interpolate between keys and are able to add a whole lot of snappy movement, overshoot, intentionally have less interpolation ect, its a lot more involved than just "the computer does everything between keys".

    I spent years working off of arcsystems foundational concepts for a 2D look in 3D. The sad truth of the matter is that there approach is hyper specific and only functions in an extremely controlled environment. It looks phenomenal don't get me wrong, but look at the difference between the story mode animation and the in game animation and you'll see just how quickly it goes off the rails when you take it out of its designed space.

    i usually call these types of characters "mid range brawlers/bruisers" though it includes any character with these qualities, regardless of big weapon or not. we COULD call them "heavy slash" characters in honor of guilty gear while nodding to big big weapon.

    "2D games are expensive to make" 20 seconds later "Skullgirls holds the record for most sprites" So you're telling me....2D is prohibitively expensive but a kickstarter Indie game can do it but not Capcom or ArcSys? 🤨

      @@typhoonbh So? They made the game on a shoestring budget. How does that disprove my point? Especially since they were adding characters during this period. Then they kickstarted ANOTHER supposedly too expensive 2D game (Indivisible) before they disbanded.

      @@burningphoneix My point is not that triple a fighting game companies can't do it, its that they wont, especially when they plan on making a series of games. They are going to pick the option that gives them the most opportunity to generate money.

    imo the best of all time design balance of every designs, is Gulty Gear Strive 2.5D, no fighting games need more to be amazing, too much realistic kills that anime vibe, and too old pixels sprites as Street fighter Turbo is not high definition enough, Street fighter 4 was the best design it didn't need more but Capcom pushed too far anyway on the next sequels. Same for King of fighters the XIII was good enough XIV was also ok, but again it was enough. Remember those was anime style fighting games , sooo imagine in the future if compagnies keep going realistic, it will no longer be an anime as it was originally. The more companies work on polishing graphics the less time or effort is used to create very good mechanics and gameplay features making games more rich in content, the perfect design is not always whats matter the most, i rater play a good mechanic game lokking a bit older than amazing graphic designed game not having improoving mechanics. Imo the best improoved mechanics games of all time was Dead or Alive and Killer Instinct
