What about Labcoat 21 from DBFZ? She was/is so broken that she actually was banned in competitive play until bandai normalized her. Nerfing her from the best character in the game. To the best character in the game

Used raw it was a 4fr unreactable reversal grab. If you got hit at all, by any character on your opponents team, you were debuffed via special tag mechanic, and she got a buff on top of it. Before her nerf, she was 100% broken, and not only because of the debuff. Compared to some of the others on this list, she was WAY more problematic to the state of the game she was in. The only "answer" was "just don't get hit", which is the biggest oversimplification in fighting games, and could apply to any of the characters mentioned in this list as well.

@@MullilluM well I'm a DBFZ channel myself and in all honesty (I swear I don't mean this as a brag) the amount of times I got debuffed by 21 was minimal even before the nerf but now that she is nerfed I have never gotten debuffed by her since so yeah I get that she had a ridiculous toolset but can you compare with characters like HC who literally makes the game boring to watch. It was especially hard for me as I main nagoriyuki so majority of times I couldn't even move let alone fight HC since I had to keep an eye on my bloodguage

Yeah you are right about Bayo. Though unlike Bayo in Smash 4. Steve was never fun to play as or against. If you are a casual than Steve is most likely boring/annoying to play as or against. If you are playing in competition than you might learn how to play as him with his unique (to say the least) playstyle which is not that fun IMO or if you play against him than again it is not that fun. IMHO a character that's boring to play as /against is the worst thing that could happen. Like noone wins with how boring it is.

Even WITH Bayo that game had more tier variety in top 8 than Ultimate. Players like Raito, HIKARU, Fatality and Ranai were threats at the tippity-top level of play with their assortment of mid tiers even in the era of Bayonetta. That game wasn't killed by her. Her meta had basically just gotten traction during 2018. People just moved on when Ultimate dropped. If she was going to kill the game, she didn't have the opportunity since the shiny new thing dropped.
As strong as HC is, the whole "he can cover his whiffs with the gun" is not really the reason I feel like. His gun won't lock on unless the opponent is in block or hitstun, which obviously won't be the case when he just whiffed something. Also, most Happy Chaos players will bring out his gun while doing a poke so that they can confirm into gunshot steady aim, which means that if he whiffs he will be in a position where he can't block until he puts the gun away again, which makes it a perfect opportunity to punish him.
Yeah, I'm still kinda new to Guilty Gear, but I know that one of HC's strengths is using the gun to make his moves safe, not to make whiffs safe. The reticle looses focus when performing other attacks, and focuses slower on whiff.
You haven't played against HC much if you think you can actually whiff punish him. HC's biggest problem is 100% the fact that he's basically plus on whiff.
The weird thing about Guilty Gear is every character has something nobody else has. I literally play Millia who has basically 3 air dashes while everyone else gets 1 (and non in some cases). Yet Happy Chaos still manages to break the game because he has seemingly no weaknesses and if you hit him he just uses yrc and regains the advantage
Love the list but would love maybe some other characters who people had to USE and HATE because for me when it comes to DLC it would be MKX Tanya, Tekken 7 Leroy, KOFXIII Mr.Karate

Guilty gear strive insane damage has nothing to do with the characters. It's just the game is made this way. But past that if you imported strives mechanics and tension bar then yes they would all be broken.
I still remember 2B in Soul Calibur 6. The single most loved and hated character in the franchise, not even Yoda in 4 was hated that much, he was banned due to his sheer size.

Inferno had a lot of rushdown potential (much like 2B had), a few air-to-ground interactions (which few characters in soul calibur ever had, most of which were banned from tournies), but her greatest flaw was that she struggled against rushdown unlike inferno who didn't care. Her greatest strength was her greatest weakness.
from what i have seen people weren't upset about the akuma combo rather they just don't like the comeback mechanic thats currently seen in a lot of fighting games these days.
Yeah it's so dumb that he can just come back from literal pixel of health. I love comeback mechanics and tekken heavily encourages it (I mean they have skill trees for combos on how to fuck them up for bigger damage), but it's always been a 70% comeback at most for a string. It give's them that 30% to come back and wreck you so for Akuma is just delete that bar feels really unfair.
Akuma wasnt DLC though. And his transition to 3d was very well done by the tekken team. Additionally the execution required to play him optimally is insane. Much stricter timing then traditional sf.

I'm also 90 percent sure some of them were 2f links (might have him confused with E.RYu though. It's been ten years lmao) This also applies to 3s Juggles (E.G you land tatsu in the air). Overall you just have to be more "prepared" to do stuff in game in SF, (that's SF4 in general for you though) T7 Akuma is there 50.50'n you, so you mentally have more time to prepare. You already KNOW that you're in clean hit range for stuff like D3. You can see that you've landed WS2, jumped a mid etc
When mentioning tekken how could anyone forget about Leroy. Release Leroy was so broken that on some big tournament (can't remember which one) there were 7 Leroys in top 8.
The thing is HC, absolutely he’s top tier, but you can’t blame he for why you lost. While simplified, it is just a skill issue. I mean, just the recent CEOtaku, both HC got taken out in top 24, one being the winner of evo that year. Faust, Axl, Sol and other characters considered mid or even ‘bottom’ tier made it into top 24 and even 8. Ram, barely any of her as well as Nago despite being top tier. I mean, there’s a reason the Japanese tier lost is different, because they have god tier Potemkin and goldlewis players, while they find ram easy to beat.
Small correction: There were tons of Nagos in the top 32. In fact, he was tied for being the most represented character with Happy Chaos. He also won the tournament.

When the first wave of DLC for smash was half way through my friend said "they should add Minecraft Steve to the game." I told him that if that happened I would delete the game and wouldn't play again. I didn't play the game for 6 months and he remains my least favorite character right next to Banjo and Kazooie
I just find it hilarious that not only is Happy Chaos basically God yet he chooses to use a gun, but also EVERYONE in Guilty Gear except MAYBE Bridget can either deflect bullets with their pecs or just regenerate instantly. In a world where getting shot by a gun is how people get their daily mineral intake, Chaos uses a gun and *is one of the best characters.*
For me DLC characters have a problem You need to pay to unlock them, thats why i only see playing saying "i buught every character" instead of "i unlocked every character" i feel like its kinda unfair to those who cant pay for it, and yeah thats a case that happens a lot in some countries
Theres also lab coat 21 in DBFZ who got banned, and im pretty sure, hated And leroy in tekken 7 who was OP at first, but i dont know if he was as hated as other chars
I remember back in Mortal Kombat X when Tremor came out. He was insane in pretty much all 3 variations but more so Crystalline than others. Had a move to negate chip; could make stage interactable and throw them at you or use them to get out of the corner with armour and had some insane damage and setplay. Needless to say he was top pick in a game that was high-paced and nutty as MKX
Tremor wasnt very popular until years after release and he wasnt considered top tier for the chip negation or stage interactable, its because he had one of the best armored specials in the game remaining one of the only three that would often launch you for trying to meaty, a rare far range 6f punisher that was also plus oB if finished, a 0 oB low special that could only be interrupted with an armor trait which would also leave him at the perfect distance for d1 mash mindgames that most characters had to deal with and a technically reactable overhead special launcher that no one reacted to due to the massive input delay on console which was the primary console for competition. A lot of people also wuestion him being top 1 because kitana, liu, sektor, smoke, Mileena and Shinnok are also incredibly strong. I hadnt played at the time but release Alien had a far worse reputation from what ive seen. What I find interesting though that I know little complaints about mk9 freddy and kenshi who were no less than top 5 and being two the only prominent zoners as youd rarely see characters below around top 13. Don't think Akuma should count here. Sure, he's not a Tekken character, but he is NOT a DLC character. He comes with the base game(T7) for free, and the only thing blocking most players' path from using his insane damage output is his equally insane and demanding execution.
I genuinely like Luke not because he was broken but a really cool character. I didn't much like his design in SF5 as much but coming in SF6 he looks way better and I can't wait to played him soon in that game.❤💪

Didn't see anyone mention it but Scorpion getting into Injustice 1 kinda killed the game in general, not just competitively. Impressive since injustice 2 was right around the corner at the time lol.
Tbf, Akuma was a base game character. But Tekken 7 is no stranger to controversial DLC characters due to being a Bamco game and all that. You have Noctis with the ORA which was more infamous in online than it ever was in competitive because of the netcode, Release Leroy who had every tool a character ever wanted and was easy to use on top of that, Release Fakhkumram, who had amazing damage and mixups as well as a very wonky hurtbox that made certain strings and combos not work on him as they should despite being a big body and Release Lidia who was overall great but not as busted as Leroy.
People when Steve was announced: oh boy I can't wait to show up at Evo with Steve People when randos ACTUALLY pull up and win EVO with Steve: WAIT NO BAN STEVE Even if Steve is insanely stupid and currently overcentralized, this is a really funny situation.

I don’t think Chaos is that much of a problem anymore after 1 patch passed after he was released. Sure really strong offense but he has a really clear weaknesses To balance it out and those weaknesses can cost him the game really fast if he is not playing right. -NO DEFENSE, he literally dies in string And mix loop -NO REVERSAL no panic button -has to land fire ball to make a gun viable -Vulnerable in Gun stance -has to recharge pressure before continue his offense(get force to stop offense) - no health He is like if every character has 50 offense and 50 defense this guy literally has 0 Defense and 100 offense. He is disgusting on offense but he is nothing but a paper on defense. That’s what i gonna say

Dbz broly from fighterz has been busted since he came out in the first season, and is still used and abused when the game had been fully finished and added onto so it's gotta go to him Best projectiles, armor, big ass normals that hit way faster than they should, a barrier, command grabs for days, it's disgusting
Super scummy that the new way to advertise these characters often is to make them super OP, forcing pros to play those characters or get curb stomped at the next tournament, then making us all watch the same mirror match in top 8 because no one else is really viable. And of course the patch that ends up nerfing these characters to hell is released AFTER the tournaments when the damage is already done. Leroy and Lab Coat 21 are prime examples of this.
evo japan 2020 back when leroy was just released was one of the lowest tekken 7 has been. there were no caveats of using him at all, coupled with literally 0 execution barriers and the tournament was just pretty much 80% leroy. it was the most miserable tekken 7 top 8 ive ever seen.
I think people are realy biased toward DLC character. If you keep adding character into an already existing meta with less beta testing character, mistakes happens. But the part that baffles me is people forgetting that some base roaster membres are also super broken, but had more time to be matched up and fixed by devs. Plsu a character like Steve released late into the game didn't had a lot of patches to fix him'
Like 2 of the 3 top tiers in strive are base roster, and all the other dlc are varying levels of mid. The game is genuinely well balanced. Is it as fun as it could be, maybe not. They can still do some changes and additions to make the game even more fun but overall, it does come down to skill and knowledge.
Lab Coat 21 definitely deserved a spot in that video, the absolute worst case of blatant P2W DLC in recent memory. She was so broken on launch she was entirely banned from play at CEO 2022, and last time such a high profile character ban occurred it was fucking SSBB Meta Knight.
Akuma isn't DLC tho. He was added in T7 FR in base roster. And for people who think that its strictly about his damage it is but partially. The main reason is that he gets this damage off a jump in that avoids majority of mids and off a 10f normal
We can tell you may be new to fighting game history so let us help you: akuma is not a dlc character has you said Leroy fahk or even geese for tekken 7 you’d be fine. Guilty gear has had a rep in a fighting game before which was baiken in samsho and she wasn’t hated. For smash Steve isn’t much of a great pick since that’s a bit debatable at the moment. Byleth by far is the most hated but not for tier reasons.
i'm curious, would there be a chance to make a fighting game character who dosen't want to be agressive? like....someone who is basically there to set up character specific passives (if hit, X pattern attack triggers, if blocking correctly, character hits for a riposte) and map triggers that are more traps then attacks (proxy triggers, triggers activating uppon a specific move being done in range of it, so on), and are just banking on baiting or chucking the enemy into them.
Starfire in Injustice 2 was easily the most hated DLC character in the game. She had all the same annoying aspects of pre-nerf Deadshot while also having incredible up-close game.
I think I remember people comparing Luke to either Jake or Logan Paul when he was first revealed. I don't really keep up with Street Fighter, but he was a bit of a meme for a while.
Akuma is not a DLC character. In Tekken Leroy and Fahkuram were both so overpowered at launch they ruined the Meta. EVO Japan 2021 had 6 Leroys in top8.
While I personally don't play it I've heard many many people is the DBFZ community talk about android 21 being horribly busted on release and breaking a ton of rules
You didn't really go over why people consider steve broken. He has some of the highest damage combos in the game with block extensions (something, no one else can even theoretically have aside from kirby), can uncontestably block off the stage over peoples' recoveries which has no counterplay aside from "don't ever lose stage control", super tricky and strong kill options (charged minecart being unreactable and uncontestable by tons of the the cast plus it's a projectile command grab which no one else has, and diamond bair, diamond bair being the strongest in the game aside from aura lucario), if they get diamond, their comeback mechanic, once, they can still get another on the same stock and basically keep their high damage, early killing comeback mechanic for the majority of the game and on top of that, their boxing tools are insane, all of their tools are disjointed and safe. They have no weakness, tons of top tier traits and the cheesing potential of a mid-low tier, all of which must be played around at all times with the opponent put on a timer they really can't prevent unless they play perfectly.
Sure, Steve is broken, but he's funny broken. Many people still like Steve Smash 4 Bayonetta is broken, but not funny broken. The vast majority of the people really hate her and still to this day
I know they're not dlc but the console exclusives for Soul caliber were op for the simple fact that you never knew how to play around them unless you had the same console
Tekken 7's DLC characters have all been hated (with perhaps the only exceptions being Armor King and Anna). Akuma, Geese, and Eliza play a different game. Julia, Zafina, Kunimitsu, Marduk, Leroy, Fahkumram, and Lidia all needed severe nerfs, and sometimes didn't get them or remained very strong. Ganryu, Lei, and Noctis are annoying to fight, but nobody really plays them, so good luck actually getting practice with the matchup. And finally, Negan has all of those things wrapped up in a neat little package. Even AK is strong and annoying to go up against at times, and Anna, while being pretty low tier, can mess you up in the hands of a good player. However, they are legacy characters and people don't have a problem with them like they do the others.
I don't know if they were hated, but there we're so many dbfz character that were over powered at least one and we're probably hated: UI Goku, Lab 21, Kid Buu, Z broly, Teen Gohan, Android 16, and probably more I don't remember (was base Vegeta one?)

I still remember 2B in Soul Calibur 6. The single most loved and hated character in the franchise, not even Yoda in 4 was hated that much, he was banned due to his sheer size.

@@mirzapramudya1580 the only other things in soul calibur 6 that were banned were custom characters at tournaments, and Inferno from online and tournaments. Inferno had a lot of rushdown potential (much like 2B had), a few air-to-ground interactions (which few characters in soul calibur ever had, most of which were banned from tournies), but her greatest flaw was that she struggled against rushdown unlike inferno who didn't care. Her greatest strength was her greatest weakness.
I think Steve is probably the hardest character to get good at but once you do, your just invincible
from what i have seen people weren't upset about the akuma combo rather they just don't like the comeback mechanic thats currently seen in a lot of fighting games these days.
Yeah it's so dumb that he can just come back from literal pixel of health. I love comeback mechanics and tekken heavily encourages it (I mean they have skill trees for combos on how to fuck them up for bigger damage), but it's always been a 70% comeback at most for a string. It give's them that 30% to come back and wreck you so for Akuma is just delete that bar feels really unfair.
Nope it was definitely akuma. He remains top 1 since years and superakouma keeps on getting boo'd for getting results with him.
Akuma wasnt DLC though. And his transition to 3d was very well done by the tekken team. Additionally the execution required to play him optimally is insane. Much stricter timing then traditional sf.
One of his nerfs ended up making his execution a bit easier

I'm also 90 percent sure some of them were 2f links (might have him confused with E.RYu though. It's been ten years lmao) This also applies to 3s Juggles (E.G you land tatsu in the air). Overall you just have to be more "prepared" to do stuff in game in SF, (that's SF4 in general for you though)
T7 Akuma is there 50.50'n you, so you mentally have more time to prepare. You already KNOW that you're in clean hit range for stuff like D3. You can see that you've landed WS2, jumped a mid etc

The thing is HC, absolutely he’s top tier, but you can’t blame he for why you lost. While simplified, it is just a skill issue. I mean, just the recent CEOtaku, both HC got taken out in top 24, one being the winner of evo that year. Faust, Axl, Sol and other characters considered mid or even ‘bottom’ tier made it into top 24 and even 8. Ram, barely any of her as well as Nago despite being top tier.
I mean, there’s a reason the Japanese tier lost is different, because they have god tier Potemkin and goldlewis players, while they find ram easy to beat.

When the first wave of DLC for smash was half way through my friend said "they should add Minecraft Steve to the game." I told him that if that happened I would delete the game and wouldn't play again. I didn't play the game for 6 months and he remains my least favorite character right next to Banjo and Kazooie

I just find it hilarious that not only is Happy Chaos basically God yet he chooses to use a gun, but also EVERYONE in Guilty Gear except MAYBE Bridget can either deflect bullets with their pecs or just regenerate instantly. In a world where getting shot by a gun is how people get their daily mineral intake, Chaos uses a gun and *is one of the best characters.*

It was actually confirmed that Luke in SF6 was designed before his SFV variant. So if you want to get technical, Luke was redesigned for SFV.

I remember back in Mortal Kombat X when Tremor came out. He was insane in pretty much all 3 variations but more so Crystalline than others. Had a move to negate chip; could make stage interactable and throw them at you or use them to get out of the corner with armour and had some insane damage and setplay. Needless to say he was top pick in a game that was high-paced and nutty as MKX

For me triborg are more broken in the release than tremor, even with all the Nerf they are more dangerous than tremor in the final update
Tremor wasnt very popular until years after release and he wasnt considered top tier for the chip negation or stage interactable, its because he had one of the best armored specials in the game remaining one of the only three that would often launch you for trying to meaty, a rare far range 6f punisher that was also plus oB if finished, a 0 oB low special that could only be interrupted with an armor trait which would also leave him at the perfect distance for d1 mash mindgames that most characters had to deal with and a technically reactable overhead special launcher that no one reacted to due to the massive input delay on console which was the primary console for competition.
A lot of people also wuestion him being top 1 because kitana, liu, sektor, smoke, Mileena and Shinnok are also incredibly strong. I hadnt played at the time but release Alien had a far worse reputation from what ive seen. What I find interesting though that I know little complaints about mk9 freddy and kenshi who were no less than top 5 and being two the only prominent zoners as youd rarely see characters below around top 13.

Don't think Akuma should count here. Sure, he's not a Tekken character, but he is NOT a DLC character. He comes with the base game(T7) for free, and the only thing blocking most players' path from using his insane damage output is his equally insane and demanding execution.

Leroy from Tekken 7 was even more broken than Akuma. In EVO Japan 2020, from top 8, 6 were Leroy players.
Tbf, Akuma was a base game character. But Tekken 7 is no stranger to controversial DLC characters due to being a Bamco game and all that. You have Noctis with the ORA which was more infamous in online than it ever was in competitive because of the netcode, Release Leroy who had every tool a character ever wanted and was easy to use on top of that, Release Fakhkumram, who had amazing damage and mixups as well as a very wonky hurtbox that made certain strings and combos not work on him as they should despite being a big body and Release Lidia who was overall great but not as busted as Leroy.

I don’t think Chaos is that much of a problem anymore after 1 patch passed after he was released.
Sure really strong offense but he has a really clear weaknesses To balance it out and those weaknesses can cost him the game really fast if he is not playing right.

Super scummy that the new way to advertise these characters often is to make them super OP, forcing pros to play those characters or get curb stomped at the next tournament, then making us all watch the same mirror match in top 8 because no one else is really viable. And of course the patch that ends up nerfing these characters to hell is released AFTER the tournaments when the damage is already done. Leroy and Lab Coat 21 are prime examples of this.

evo japan 2020 back when leroy was just released was one of the lowest tekken 7 has been. there were no caveats of using him at all, coupled with literally 0 execution barriers and the tournament was just pretty much 80% leroy. it was the most miserable tekken 7 top 8 ive ever seen.
I think people are realy biased toward DLC character.
If you keep adding character into an already existing meta with less beta testing character, mistakes happens.
But the part that baffles me is people forgetting that some base roaster membres are also super broken, but had more time to be matched up and fixed by devs. Plsu a character like Steve released late into the game didn't had a lot of patches to fix him'
Like 2 of the 3 top tiers in strive are base roster, and all the other dlc are varying levels of mid.
The game is genuinely well balanced. Is it as fun as it could be, maybe not. They can still do some changes and additions to make the game even more fun but overall, it does come down to skill and knowledge.
I feel like Bayonetta in Sm4sh would have been a much better option than Steve in Ultimate. Bayo was literary built different.

Lab Coat 21 definitely deserved a spot in that video, the absolute worst case of blatant P2W DLC in recent memory. She was so broken on launch she was entirely banned from play at CEO 2022, and last time such a high profile character ban occurred it was fucking SSBB Meta Knight.
Akuma isn't DLC tho. He was added in T7 FR in base roster.
And for people who think that its strictly about his damage it is but partially. The main reason is that he gets this damage off a jump in that avoids majority of mids and off a 10f normal

We can tell you may be new to fighting game history so let us help you: akuma is not a dlc character has you said Leroy fahk or even geese for tekken 7 you’d be fine. Guilty gear has had a rep in a fighting game before which was baiken in samsho and she wasn’t hated. For smash Steve isn’t much of a great pick since that’s a bit debatable at the moment. Byleth by far is the most hated but not for tier reasons.

i'm curious, would there be a chance to make a fighting game character who dosen't want to be agressive? like....someone who is basically there to set up character specific passives (if hit, X pattern attack triggers, if blocking correctly, character hits for a riposte) and map triggers that are more traps then attacks (proxy triggers, triggers activating uppon a specific move being done in range of it, so on), and are just banking on baiting or chucking the enemy into them.
Starfire in Injustice 2 was easily the most hated DLC character in the game. She had all the same annoying aspects of pre-nerf Deadshot while also having incredible up-close game.

Akuma is not a DLC character. In Tekken Leroy and Fahkuram were both so overpowered at launch they ruined the Meta. EVO Japan 2021 had 6 Leroys in top8.

You didn't really go over why people consider steve broken. He has some of the highest damage combos in the game with block extensions (something, no one else can even theoretically have aside from kirby), can uncontestably block off the stage over peoples' recoveries which has no counterplay aside from "don't ever lose stage control", super tricky and strong kill options (charged minecart being unreactable and uncontestable by tons of the the cast plus it's a projectile command grab which no one else has, and diamond bair, diamond bair being the strongest in the game aside from aura lucario), if they get diamond, their comeback mechanic, once, they can still get another on the same stock and basically keep their high damage, early killing comeback mechanic for the majority of the game and on top of that, their boxing tools are insane, all of their tools are disjointed and safe. They have no weakness, tons of top tier traits and the cheesing potential of a mid-low tier, all of which must be played around at all times with the opponent put on a timer they really can't prevent unless they play perfectly.
Akuma is no DLC also hes rather balanced now

I know they're not dlc but the console exclusives for Soul caliber were op for the simple fact that you never knew how to play around them unless you had the same console
Tekken 7's DLC characters have all been hated (with perhaps the only exceptions being Armor King and Anna). Akuma, Geese, and Eliza play a different game. Julia, Zafina, Kunimitsu, Marduk, Leroy, Fahkumram, and Lidia all needed severe nerfs, and sometimes didn't get them or remained very strong. Ganryu, Lei, and Noctis are annoying to fight, but nobody really plays them, so good luck actually getting practice with the matchup. And finally, Negan has all of those things wrapped up in a neat little package. Even AK is strong and annoying to go up against at times, and Anna, while being pretty low tier, can mess you up in the hands of a good player. However, they are legacy characters and people don't have a problem with them like they do the others.
