Demonstration Of Sony SL-HF950ES Mechanism
Filmed with a Panasonic DMC-GF8 Lumix camera.
This is a quick demonstration of the "Linear Skate" loading and internal mechanism of my Sony SL-HF950ES Super Betamax machine, before it was sold. You'll notice when the tape is ejected, or the tray is opened to insert a cassette, that I have to continually turn the machine off. This is because the limit switch was not working, and the tray motor would not stop operating at the end of the travel.
I bought this machine new in 1988. The retail price then was around AU$2,300, but a friend obtained it wholesale for me so it *only* cost around AU$1,800. In today's money it would cost about AU$4,400. It was the most expensive domestic Betamax ever sold in Australia. This was a European model, and the only modification to make it an Australian market model was to put an Australian power plug on the lead.
Sony Beta machines at the time had a feature called Skip-Scan. When the machine was fast forwarding, pushing the fast forward button would drop it into picture search, and when releasing the button, it would drop back into fast forward. It was the same for rewind. I have demonstrated it in the video, but it's a bit difficult to work out without a monitor (at about 4.23). These machines had very slow fast forward and rewind.
The machine was wonderful when it worked, but it was not that reliable. I discovered at the time that almost all Sony service agents were uniformly terrible, and just didn't care.
I once had the video heads replaced, and when the machine was returned, none of my existing tapes would play properly (like the tracking was way out). The repairer reckoned it was OK, and even Sony Australia (located at Woolloongabba at the time) said it was OK. I took a selection of tapes and demonstrated that they wouldn't play properly, and they still said it was OK. I remember being very close to chucking it into an industrial bin when I was walking out. I then discovered a repairer quite near where I worked at the time, and they aligned it for me in one day and it would once again play all my existing tapes. I used that repairer from then on.
Most common problems were tape left hanging out of the cassette when ejected, the VU meter failing, and the stationary erase head not working.
My only Beta machine now is a Sanyo VTC-5000 II, which works very well after installing a belt and tyre kit.
My apologies also for the neighbour's dog barking during the video.

Skase was an astute business man, unfortunately the explosive interest rate increase of the late 80s/early 90s caught him out as it did many others. The issue is that the media hounded him as evil, but in reality, the media was the evil one. How many companies have gone under since then, and stakeholders have lost money? Hundred of thousands... Buying shares is a risk in itself for every investor His legacy made Port Douglass famous & the Sheraton Hotel Gold Coast, my fav place to stay

I took ownership of a 1983 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit in silver sand with Ivory interior. Within a year I disassembled the car had it refinished in a five-way metallic with an incredibly durable clear coat as the paint finishes of the '80s rolls royces were defective. So the car had to be painted. The steering rack was a weak spot in the car so I fitted it with a turbo or steering rack with thicker shafts as those tended to wear out within only 30,000 miles. Then I fitted the car with a harvey Bailey engineered suspension removed all the mission controls kept the fuel injection 14-volt ignition for a higher spark gap and as the British mechanic who serviced it said mate this car is fast what did you do to it? I then fitted the door panels with the wood grain trims and the door threshold plates as seen in the centenary, and red Rolls-Royce badges. On the grill boot and the wheels. Fitted it with the 17x7 aluminum alloy wheels that were fitted to the turbo r's. The silver paint was removed and the alloy was polished. I built a truly Spectacular One of a Kind Rolls-Royce just for myself from all the various pieces that went for the SZ series. The upgraded weather stripping on the doors, and an upgraded audio system. I sold my Silver Shadows to new owners for them to care for them. And the Silver Cloud 3 I never finished the restoration I've sold that to someone else to finish. I kept my custom-made Silver Spirit / spur mulliner Park Ward Edition just for myself. With only 51,000 miles on it it's still sleeping and it's carport. Nearly losing all my wealth in 2008 I maintained my ownership of my special Rolls-Royce. And soon by 2024 she'll be on the road again and with silver hair on my head I'll be an old man driving my Rolls-Royce that I remodeled when I was a younger man. It's always best to take your Rolls-Royce apart and put it back together that way you understand your car you know how it was built because you in your hands actually had something to do with it.

I think any turbo diesel engine in the early 1970s (or any diesel engine for that matter at the time) would have been far too crude for use in a car like this. Today's turbo diesels would have been a better fit.

Nowadays they would have probably brought the ship in at night and no cameras or family members would have been allowed any where near it. When did we get so paranoid?

What's interesting about this event is that the day after the explosion, Navy investigators went to the home of the sailor who was said to be responsible. It was his parent's house. They removed a number of items from his bedroom, and then a few days later issued a statement; and I'm not making this up, that the man involved may have been a homosexual; and his sex life may have caused the explosion.
