As with most things involving Christopher Skase, it really was too good to be true.

how was Christopher Skase a legend when he had a debt of over $700 million?
Jason hi...I understand what your saying but he left 2 magic legacy hotels behind which can be enjoyed. The criminals in all this was the government when they repossessed the hotels could have help pay of some debt to investers whoever they found it in there own intrerest to sell of the assets and not give a damn about the every day invester. ..thats just my thoughts

No George, the criminal was Paul Keating who allowed interest rates to rise to 17%. I almost lost my house. Tens of thousands did. Skase lost him empire.
Keating, the self proclaimed “greatest treasurer in the world” - who had left school at 15 and never been to university - was the real criminal here.
Live this. This was the 80's to me and my family! You wouldn't happen to have a challenge bank advert form 87/88 with the towers on the river? Same period hard to find!

Yes, but you are missing a bit of the story mate.
Around the same time the ALP supported Tricontinental bank went under with 2 billion in debts.
The ALP WA Inc under Brian Burke went under taking with it AUD 870 million of taxpayers money.
The WA ALP supported Rothwell bank went under owing AUD 400 million.
Corrupt lending and investment by the Victorian ALP just about bankrupt the state - they even had to sell the trams and lease them back. Just the Pyramid Building Society alone cost the Victorian taxpayers AUD900 million.
Meanwhile in South Australia the ALP run State Bank of SA went under owning AUD 3.3 Billion.
Skase was a corrupt arsehole who got caught out by the ALP introducing 17% interest rates - but he was insignificant compared to the ALP money grubbing corrupt arseholes, most of who walked free of any charge.
The ALP should have been banned after 1990 for the pain and misery it caused.
All of this needs to be put into perspective.
In the mid 80s finance was cheap, Japan was booming, and corruption in QLD meant the white shoe brigade could build resorts wherever they wanted. Dunk Island, Daydream Island, Hinchinbrook Island, Hamilton Island, Hayman Island, Great Keppel Island, Brampton Island, South Molle Island, all became resorts.
Those developers who couldnt get their own island built on the mainland. Skase built the Mirage Resort, Yohachiro Iwasaki. built his Iwasaki Resort. The Japanese used to fly in to play golf. It was cheaper than playing in Japan.
By the early 90s the recession, high interest rates, a collapse in japanese tourism as the bubble burst, the Fitzgerald corruption enquiry and a series of bad cyclones pretty well ruined them.
Now some of the resorts live on as testimony to the 80s. Others are in ruins.
I remember it all so well.
