    Rob - related but need your help - 2 Q's please: 1) This video talks about routing a mix to USB. Other videos show how to route a mix to QU-Drive for recording (ex. route 5/6 to Ch. 17 and 18). But those videos and the AH user guide ONLY address "Stereo Recording". My question is if I route Mix 5/6 to channels 17/18 but do a MULTI-track recording - do you know if 5/6 will end up on 17/18? Meaning recorded tracks 1-16 are the individual input channels, but 17/18 are my routed 5/6, not the default L+R? 2) I've seen sources that say you CAN choose which of the 18 tracks to record multi...like inputs 1-5 only... but don't tell you how. I cannot find any way to do this. I've also read it's always all 18, no choosing. Any thoughts? Thank you.

      Great questions. 1) That is correct. Assigning the channels for USB is a single interface that applies to both USB ports (rear port for a computer and the front port for q-drive) 2) Yes you can choose. Open the USB dialog screen where all 18 channels are listed. Tap any channel to highlight, then use the dial knob to choose the channel to be recorded in that spot. You can also dial it all the way around to "X" to essentially turn out off. NOTE however: the q-drive software will "record" all 18 channels regardless of the source you choose. Some of the resulting WAV files will simply be blank...but you will always got 18 of them

      @@soundadvicewithrob3083 Thanks for the quick response. I have limited access to the venue's QU and don't have a lot of experimental time with it. I'll route mix 5/6 to 17/18, do the multi-track record, and check the recording after the show. (The goal is mix 5/6 attempts to capture the band's performance mix, whereas Main outs 17/18 are the house reinforcement mix - they'll be quite different ;^). Thanks again. Vids are super helpful.

      @soundadvicewithrob3083 Před měsícem

      Connecting stereo is quite easy but depends on your wiring. If you have 2 separate cables (either 1/4 or XLR) you simply connect each to adjacent channels. eg 1&2. Then use the PAN control to move one channel to Left and the other to Right. Finally for convenience you can link the two channels so they are controlled as one. if you are using a single stereo jack, the QU series mixers have 3 jacks just for for that stereo connection (ST1 ST2 and ST3)

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083

      Great question. First thing is to realize that there no mic or magic setting that will turn a shy quiet voice into a great singing voice. it is what it is. You might consider a condenser mic that can be a bit more sensitive to get more gain but that may not be an option. You can only go with best effort. Set the gain as needed but always avoid the possibility of feedback. I will always prioritize “no-feedback” over volume any day.

This means the actual gain control will be completely diff for every input channel.

      Since the introduction of digital mixers with built-in FX engines, manufacturers have eliminated the "insert" jack that used to be available on every input channel. Using an external FX can be done but will need to eat up extra inputs and outputs to accomplish it. First assign the channel(s) to a mix output - you will need to dedicate that mix output for the external FX until. Patch the Mix out jacks into the external unit. Patch the external unit output(s) back into unused input channels.

    This method of adjusting many frequencies will not work because it would affect other channels. This is only ideal for a certain monitor that amplifies the vocal microphones. I would also account for the sound waves that bounce against the objects in their directions. The problem is that the mic can be moved around during the show a lot. Some people never learn how to stay put in one place 😅. When musicians play too loud, singers also tend to cover the microphone head, which can cause feedback. For a small area, it would require everyone to be onstage to test out before the show and be aware of their own volume at all times unless they use IEM.

    Hey Rob! Thanks so much for your clear and concise explanation here. I'm a little confused about A&H's choice to refer to the FX Master Faders as sends, but regardless- should those FX Send channels be routed to the LR, or just the returns? I don't want to create a feedback loop where the return is going back into the send or something like that. Thanks again!

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083 Před 3 měsíci

      Thx for the feedback. As I mentioned in the video, the concept of send and return comes from the analog days when signal was “sent” out of the board to outboard fx units and then “returned” back to the mixer as a processed fx. As such Fxsend and FXreturn work as a separate independent signal path. FXsends does not yet have any fx applied so no point sending to LR. Only the FXreturn is routed to any output since that is the signal that has fx applied. Hope that makes sense

      Thx and glad to hear you found it helpful. Each individual channel fader allows you create a “mix” of all the channels into a single combined signal. The master is then the overall volume of the single mixed signal

    Another question to add to last question we set-up in a room that about 100 ft wide by 150 ft deep using 2 turbo sound inspire 1000 speakers. Do you have both speakers on or just the one with the microphone?

    Not working in my case. This thing is complicated to The point that im ahocked they’re selling this stupid mixers. If The most obvious thing like playing music through USB is not possible to set even after watching tutorials then allen & heath fucked Up bad.

      A single mic will work but pull it back far enough to catch the full audio range

    Hi.. i cant hear the fx on the mix outputs.. Only on the main outputs... Is it normal? Thank you for the reply.. Nice video!

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083 Před 6 měsíci

      Its only normal if you’ve set it up that way. Referring back to the video, you use the FXReturn on each output (including mix outputs) to dial in the amount of FX you wish to hear. Since you can already hear FX on the main outputs, then FXSend is correct, you just need to go back to each FXReturn

      @@soundadvicewithrob3083 Thank you for the reply, I understood why I didn't hear the effects on the mix outputs: when I tried to listen to them I had lowered the level of channel 1 on the main outputs to zero, so the channel 1 signal was not sent to the effects processor. So I have a question. If my band has to test the monitors without the signal from the various instruments going to the main mix, also listening to the effects, if I mute or turn down the main main mix (I actually mute the master, leaving the levels high), I should still hear the effects on monitors, right?

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083 Před 5 měsíci

      Yes. FX are typically postfader, which is why the FX disappears “everywhere” when you shut down the ch1 fader on LR output. Using the LR master fader mute should allow ch1 signal to be sent to the FX

    Hi Bob, thanks for the video. I have a question. I want to use a group for streaming. I want to change the group to a mix, and go from the back of the QU32 to a Atem Mini Pro. Would that work for streaming?

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083 Před 6 měsíci

      should work ok. you just need an adapter from XLR out of the qu32 to whatever input the Atem needs (i can’t remember)

      @@soundadvicewithrob3083 Hi Bob, I used Matrix to setup my streaming, then decided to use a group as a mix to have more control over the volume of each channel using an Atem Mini Pro. And this works very well. The only question I have is, when I first set it up with the Matrix, the effects in the live streaming sounded nice. I Know the Matrix is a copy of the L&R, but for some reason now that I have it setup as a mix, the effects dont come out in the streaming. What am I doing wrong?

      Most likely you have not turned up the FXReturn in the mix you are using

    Don't forget when using FX3/4 as mix-returns , to switch which ever mix\bus you're using to "Post." They will stay "Pre" if you don't since by default they are used for monitors\IEMs. Most of the time you want FX buses to be post fader. FX1/2 are, by default, Post Fader.

    I have a question! Is there a way to make the mix master volume slave to the LR master volume? We want to be able to lower the volume on all outputs with one control....

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083 Před 7 měsíci

      The closest you could get would be to set the mix to post-fader. Reducing any LR channel would then be reduced in that mix. Matrix (also set to postfade) are the only other way to have a second output that directly follows LR

    when assigning mixes do you also have to un-assign those channels from left and right. the same as you do with Groups.

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083 Před 7 měsíci

      No. typically when using mixes these are outputs that are additional to LR … eg a monitor mix etc. You do want that channel signal to go both LR and the monitor mix

  • @jaredmundi3599
    @jaredmundi3599 Před 8 měsíci

    You dont have to unassign channels in sends if they are in a group. You might want to send the group to one send but only one channel in that group to a different send. If its turned down in the send it should be enough. Its not going to double in the same way it does in L/R
