  • After setting correct Gain staging (see part1) I’m moving on to the concept of mixing the band. Using the concept of what the band should “look like” to determine what it should sound like. We put the focus on the vocals as the most important component of the sound, and mixing all others around those vocals.

    From one "Rob" with a not so easy to pronounce last name to another, I just wanted to say I really enjoy your delivery. Very easy to understand for an old analog guy about to become a Qu Series convert.

      @@soundadvicewithrob3083 It may be a little while before I sit down at the actual Qu 24. Doing my due diligence in advance. So far, I haven't seen any reference as to what can be monitored from the headphone output and how to "assign" a particular signal/mix/group or f/x to the "cans". Thanks for your "input" (pun intended)
      Peace,

    Two things I haven’t seen in almost 15 years. 1 tape on a console. Digital consoles have scribble strips because they have layers. 2 mixing on faders. That console has dca. One dca for the guitar and you don’t have to do that four fader thing.

      1. Old habits die hard (about 40+ yrs worth now LOL). i do wish the QU did have scribble strip but the only channel labels are in the smallest possible font up on the LED screen and nowhere near the channel faders. Great in the studio but useless under a FOH tent at midnight. 2. Again old habits - also see my other video on using DCAs. that just wasn’t the focus of this topic. By all means of course comment on the topic if you choose…. Thx for playing.

    Enjoying your videos at lot!! A question regarding the master slider and how it works in relation with the individual sliders. I noticed in this video that when you adjusted individual channel sliders there are times when the slider surpassed the master sliders. What does the master slider control?

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083  Před 6 měsíci

      Thx and glad to hear you found it helpful. Each individual channel fader allows you create a “mix” of all the channels into a single combined signal. The master is then the overall volume of the single mixed signal

    I have another question regarding AMM. Have you every used it for auto mixing vocals? I saw somewhere where it suggested being used at that purpose. I suppose if you set in AMM lead vocal to 0db and any other vocal channels say to -3db, the lead vocals would always sit just that bit about the BVs. If he backs off and someone else takes a lead part, they'd be pushed until he comes in?
    Seems like a nice feature, but if used wrong could be horrible. I am interested in trying it but apprehensive too. Thanks in advance.

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083  Před 2 lety

      Another good question. The AMM is intended to be used for speech only, for instance in a panel discussion or conference. Its not really intended for a group of singers or other music sources.

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083  Před 3 lety +1

      Thx for the question John. Unfortunately there isn’t really a built-in method to create a deesser on a qu32. I’m sure you realize that a deesser is essentially a multi-band compressor where you can compress only a small bandwidth for sibilance rather than the entire sound. The built in compressor does not have the functionality to select a bandwidth to be compressed. Since the builtin compressor exists, A&H chose not to include another compressor in the fx library. Best I could suggest is using the PEQ to simply target and reduce the offending frequencies.

      Adding to what Rob said concerning de-essing, because we just solved for this with our set up, try checking mic placement if you're using a lavalier. Also check the input levels from the mic itself, if it has any adjustments to it.. What exactly are you using?

    Hi Rob what is the best settings for a bass guitar? Thanks

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083  Před rokem

      Great question, but honestly the is no single answer for “best settings”. There are so many factors that will affect the sound of an instrument from the bass itself to the amp being used and how that might be setup… to the size and acoustics of the room… the style of music being played etc etc. In each case, there may be a different choice of settings to make it sound “the best”. Generally however you can start with the great library of presets available on all A&H mixers. Start with a light compressor preset and an EQ preset for a bass. This will give you a great starting place. From there only experience will help and eventually you can trust your ears about what sounds “best”. Experiment and have fun!

    Hey Rob,
    Nothing to do with this video (which I have watched many times, always great to see someone else's method on mixing, even if it does mirror my own)
    Reading through the QuPac manual. And in it it stated the QuSb and QuPac can be used as stage boxes. I assume that's in conjugation with another Qu Desk, like the Qu32 you have here. Is that so?
    I assume a Dsnake out from the QuPac/Sb into the Qu32 giving the 16 mic pres plus the 3 St channels as patchable to the Qu32... have I understood that right?

    • @soundadvicewithrob3083
      @soundadvicewithrob3083  Před 2 lety

      Interesting. It was my understanding that since the qupac contains a full qu32 engine, the dsnake port is not configured to accept a master clock from another device. as such it cannot be used as a stage box to an existing qu32. Id be interested in reading the section of the manual that says otherwise if you’d. Pls pass it along.

    • @steevidrums
      @steevidrums Před 2 lety +1

      @@soundadvicewithrob3083 Oops yeah you’re right. Upon a 2nd reading I realise what they mean is that the PAC and SB can be placed on stage as a stagebox and an expander rack added to it for full use of the 38 in/18 outs or whatever it is.
