    Many Brits did feel intimated by the protest just as Jewish people feel in Britain near a Palestinian march right now. Leaving this morning for Palma and this has affected the planned meet up for seeing friends staying in Soller and us in Pollensa. We would certainly avoid the weekend.

    I can totally sympathise with the locals- the lack of housing is a problem everywhere. The UK is absolutely squeezed to the hilt with second homes and air bnbs, 5 car house holds, the infrastructure is as breaking point. I live in a seaside town and in the summer the locals can't get anywhere due to the tourists - It's one road in and one road out and we spend hours of the day just trying to get the supermarkets it's absolutely crazy. It's not just mallorca it's everywhere.

    What do you have to say regarding yesterday's protests in palma please? Tourists being shouted at in the street to go home etc. 10,000 protesters on the streets scaring holiday makers? I've booked a holiday for my kids and I amd we fly out on June the 10th, it's my 8 and 6 year old first holiday abroad and I picked mallorca because I thought it would be safe. Now I'm genuinely concerned we aren't welcome. I don't want my children's first holiday memory to possibly be met with hostility. The protesting group have threatened to shut down the airport etc. Please could you do an update! Many thanks

    The protests are about unsustainable tourism, which reduces accommodation (2nd homes, Airbnbs) for locals and pushes up rental prices and affects quality of life by affecting infrastructure and eco systems, e.g. pollution, sewage etc. The problem is common around Europe, e.g, Canary and Beleraic islands, parts of mainland Spain, Venice, Devon and Cornwall in the UK, and other Mediterranean hotspots

    Good on them. Greed has fed over tourism. Tourists should respect the places they visit, not take over. I visited many European cities many years ago. There was tourism, but not over tourism. Tourists got to see the attractions and experience the culture. The locals benefitted. Now I hate going anywhere. The attractions are a rip off and lost the charm. Too many people, queues. I feel for local people who have lost what they once had. The world is a mess. I don’t enjoy visiting any cities anymore, they are all the same. Same shops, brands and everything is expensive. Give me a natural landscape with no one around. Now that is a place worth visiting, for now at least

    More affordable housing that can only be purchased by Mallorca residents is one option. If the EU allow it. Regarding Airbnb, you need a license to operate a holiday let in Mallorca (unlike the UK) and the Balearics govt has not issued any new licenses since 2020, so they are making some effort. They need to do more to stop the illegal rentals. I spoke to someone in GC who’s whole job is to do this and it’s a difficult task.

    Everyone I know in Mallorca says this is about policies etc, and not about individual tourists. Thing is though, 'sell' people 'anger', and some people will 'buy' more of it than others. Look at the UK! There were 15,000+ people said to be on this march. Some would have considered opinions about what the problems are, but there were a fair few, "Tourists Go Home" placards, "Guiris Arruix", (a snide Catalan term for 'Foreigners Out') messages, and British people reporting being accosted with similar 'advice'. Overpriced property is everywhere in the West. I wonder if these 'locals' have checked out Son Gotleu, or is it just Portixol??😂 Seriously, the AirB&B complaints and lack of affordable housing are strictly for the Consell de Mallorca/Balearic Gov to address rather than TUi. Although that's the same Consell de Mallorca whose Tourism Spokesperson once said that Mallorca, "...wanted more "high quality" tourists from Germany/Scandinavia, rather than dross from the UK." 🤣🤣🤣 There's recently been that old argument about Palma being gridlocked, (it isn't, although parking is "fun"!), regurgitated, and obviously 'tourism' was to blame.🤣 Palma has ACIRE Zones, drastically reducing vehicle access to various parts of central Palma for all but residents, as well as ZAR, (restricted parking), BUT, according to Miquel Àngel Contreras Ramis of MÉS per Palma, the only way to address the situation is to rid the island of most hire cars!🤣🤣 Genius! And whilst the Consell de Mallorca did extend the Ma-19, its "idea" to alleviate congestion in Palma, was to *REDUCE* the lanes on Av. de Gabriel Roca, (Ma-19 through Palma), down to two each way. Another stroke of 'genius'!😂 Maybe the protests will achieve something for the residents. However, if all they do is drive away tourism, there'll be a lot more to worry about on the island than property prices. I'm not sure it's possible to drive away just a little bit of it.

  • @brianjackson7499
    @brianjackson7499 Před 23 hodinami

    As someone who visits the island 2/3 times a year, I've now decided to scale it back after my last visit this March as it's clear it's at breaking point and I can see the issues for those trying to get by on the island. It's probably worse in Ibiza but it's not fair on the locals. Those with riches and freedom of movement within the eu probably haven't realised their impact along with those outside of the eu buying up properties and making it unaffordable to stay there for those islanders. Let's hope a resolution can be found soon.

    Yours is a great channel Alex, its my goto for all things Majorca and Ive commented many times BUT: The people of Majorca have been complaining about the amount of hire cars on the island, they have always served me well when I go on holiday until this year when it was a travistry! The people of Majorca complaining about tourism and the price of houses/flats. Im lucky enough to know a 'local' who sold a flat by Cafe 1919 in Pollensa, on the market now for 1.2million! No smoke without fire! This year we see sunbed-gate in Pollensa - Regardless of circumstance its shameful. No beds, no wheelchair/pram access/no toilets/no water sports/some cafe bars on the beach yet to open (May2024). We are giving up on our September visit this year, will look again to see if anything has changed next year. Q: Who is driving all these stories...it must be the media?
