How to Install Pistons and New Rings - Ford LR SDV6 / S5-EP21
In this episode we show how to install pistons and new rings into our Land Rover Discovery 4 Gen2 SDV6 engine. Christian also shows how to machine a piston ring install tool and we do a platigauge test on all big end bearings. We show how we document all our measurements and check torque to rotate of the short block. One small step for man but one giant leap for our failed engine repair job.

    Hi Christian and Vera, another fascinating video and explanation on lubrication of bearings. I'm a fan of Audi's, I've always got at least one of them, I've owned them since 1990. I use a local Audi independent specialist for servicing and I've asked them to use 5w/40w, but they wont do it because of their T&C's, they provide a very good service, so I dont want to go to a desktop mechanic. Any ideas as to how I can show them the error of their ways?😮😅 I could let them do the service and then just change their oil using the Sealey syphon unit, I'm too old to lay under the car to drain via the sump plug😢

    I, as a Brit, lived and worked in the US for two decades. I was surprised how where I Iived in Pennsylvania, there were oil change shops dotted everywhere like we in the UK have pubs. Friends I came to know would ignore the manufacturers instructions for oil changes and change their oil much more frequently / shorter distance intervals than recommended. This was a totally different approach to the UK, where after warranty ran out, people would really slide on oil change discipline. In the US, frequent oil changes and the generally longer distances people drive (think nothing of driving two hours to dinner, or an hour to a supermarket) are why so many US vehicles see big mileage achievements. Seeing a car reach 250,000 miles was met with a shrug. Change your oil, people!

    '5W-dumbass'. First class! That main bearing area on the LR is shocking, from en ex tuner working heavily with the Toyota 2JZ-GTE where a stock crank, con rod, bearing, piston and oil pump will happily take twice its stock power output without breaking a sweat. I love how you compare Toyota to LR btw, but it does show just how woefully inadequate the LR engines are. A correctly installed accumulator can help extend engine lifespan. It is a pressurized reservoir that can provide oil pressure prior the first starting crank... and also if oil pressure is lost from the oil pump, it can give precious seconds of pressure before shut down. After the engine builds pressure, the accumulator refills with pressurized oil, they come in different sizes but sometimes plumbing can be a challenge.

    • @dudeman8323
      @dudeman8323 Před 3 dny

      Oh, and if employing an accumulator, you must account for the reservoir capacity. So you can get one with a single quart capacity, which in usage takes a quart from the oil pan. So you must have room in the pan for an extra quart, and also operate with a quart missing from circulation. So, maybe run 1/2 quart overfill and when charged, measure 1/2 quart low, and then measure 1/2 quart overfill when discharged, if that makes sense to everyone.

      Yeah, unfortunately, they are too expensive. And it is extremely difficult to create weekly content with an older car. We had that last year when we did a almost full restoration of my Discovery 3. Often a single video had 3 weeks worth of work in it, especially when it came to body work, grinding and rust removal. It was too much stress in addition to Christian's pretty stressful fulltime job. But hopefully in the future. 👍🙋‍♀️

    Hi Christian, I am not familiar with psting comments on CZcams, in fact this is only my second attempt, the first being yesterday on another of your older videos. I actually posted this on one of your videos (installing an oil pressure gauge) and only noticed that you had actually downloaded it 2 years ago, so I though I would repost it here in the hope of a reply. Anyway, thanks to you and your charming and lovely wife (you are very lucky, as my wife is not one bit interested in how engines work, just Horses), for all your informative and very entertaining videos. Where do you get all your technical information from, and how can I obtain it too, I don't mind paying for it by the way? I also have a 'Queen' :) in white, black & grey two tone Turbine wheels and black accents etc, it also has a red leather interior, though mine is a long wheel base, I will be keeping this one also. My wife has not very long ago bought a Discovery 4, Luxury model, which has just under 90000 Miles, not Kilometres, on it, she loves it, I like it too, I think it's much better that the new Defender, which my son has one of those, part petrol, part electric. So I am going to do the timing belts and the transmision oil and filter etc. I personally don't like electric, yes they are fast, but not practical to me. I believe we we will all be using Hydrogen anyway before too long. I had a car running on Hydrogen in 1976, so its doable. I have personally owned 56 Range Rovers and quite a number of other vehicles, which some I still have. The first one cost me £1800.00 brand new in 1970, which was quite a lot of money in those days. I believe it was one of the first one's to be produced. It was Bahama Gold, but to me, it looked more like an English Mustard colour, obviously a two door with plastic seats, no carpet or radio and certainly no power steering. I can still remember my arms aching badly, mind you I was only 16 and legally couldn't drive it on the public roads, but of course I did do so. I only ever got pulled by the Police once and that was because the Policemen had not seen one before! I have never owned or even driven a P38, never liked them one bit. I do my own maintenance now, not only because I enjoy it, but I do not trust the so called experts at the dealerships. I have had bad experiences, especially with the early models with the Buick 3.5 V8 engines, the cams used to wear down on them at low fairly miles. I remember picking one up and the head mechanic giving me a Tobacco tin with all the nuts and bolts they had left over!! That also happened at another dealership with a 12 seater 3.5 V8 Defender (1986), which I still have. Anyway, sorry about the long story, but I thought I would just let you know I am serious about my Land Rovers. Kind Regards. Paul

    I understand you are doing gen 2 block now, isn’t? does it fit all D4 3.0 bolt-on ? Or just very latest versions, like 2016 ?

      It came with a gen 2 engine. Gen 2 is from ~11/2015 on installed in all Disco 4. before that is gen 1👍🙋‍♀️
