- The power steering of our 2006 Land Rover Discovery 3 with the TDV6 Diesel makes a whining noise and leaks oil. We replace the power steering pump and hoses. We thought that this will be simple - we thought wrong...

Blacksmiths were looked upon as wizards in ancient times. They took what looked like rock and turned it into useful metal objects! You, on the other hand, Christian can take a blank of metal and turn it into a spare part using a sketch scribbled on a post it note! Now that's what I call magic!
If there were no Land-Rovers, there would be no LR-time, and Vera and Cristian would be bored every Week-end and getting fat from sitting and watching coffee videos! Thank god for Land-Rover!!!
If there were no Land-Rovers, there would be no LR-time, and Vera and Cristian would be DRIVING round the world in a LAND CRUISER making videos for LC TIME😁😁
Took the words right of my mouth 🤣🤣
Wunderbar! Now that was a debacle 😊
There would be lots of exciting things happening in the machine shop, like machining Toyota beans!
And they would be sitting in a Toyota and didnt even know, if the car has an engine or not😂
Christian is a one man orchestra. He design the parts, skillfully fabricate it, and install it precisely. Excellent job, my man!
I own a Toyota, but I’m drinking coffee whilst watching LR Time. Never a debacle 😄
😂👍
Yeah, lifes too short to own a Landrover.
Who needs a manual when you have the master at work with his ever smiling assistant, once again an enjoyable and educational video thanks guys
Ahh, my favourite Sunday morning entertainment, hope you are both well.
Another repair brought to you by the super talented Christian.. amazing the quality of workmanship and the tooling in a home garage set up.
There’s only one thing about your channel. Once I’ve binged watched all your videos I have to wait weekly to watch a new one lol keep up the good work.
Can’t even imagine any garage going to the lengths to repair a vehicle lovely job very well done
My FL2 steering was noisy , Land Rover quoted £2000 for new pump & rack to fix .
I fixed it myself in 5 minutes with a new Fluid reservoir from ebay for £10.49 😊
Great video Christian and Vera
And you can get a recon rack for £200.
Vera, you say that you are stressed. If you did not have your own genius mechanic/ machinist, and had to pay a Land Rover dealer for all the work that he does, you would be more than stressed, you would be suicidal. You both have my respect, but Mr Genius, has my total respect.
Every time I want to buy a Disco 3 I just go and watch LR Time, and it does the trick, puts me off every time. Thanks Vera and Cristian for great content every time.
What alternative would you buy then?
Yeah, a Disco 3 is not for everyone anymore. 👍🙋♀️
Only those who can deal with all these problems should by a Disco 3 these days. Even the Disco 4 is getting up in age and harder to maintain. Bolts even snap easily on the Disco 4. Wait for an upcoming video. 😅👍🙋♀️
@@hughmarcus1 I would look for something that is easier to work on, that means taking step back in technology. It's hard to say what exactly I would go for. Disco 3 diesel, has no competition in his price range when you look at comfort, off-road capability and technology that was fitted back then. But on the down side there is maintenance fineness that will come for you at some point.
@@Vera_and_Christian there is nothing you can't fix when you have lathes, welding kit + knowledge. Keep up the good work, it's a pleasure watching you.
Brilliant solution, now you can bolt on either hose the older type and the newer type. Good job, the whole family got involved as well, nice to see.
Toyoda with a d is actually the name of the family that started Toyota, all those years ago. Akio Toyoda is the current CEO. Kichiiro (sp?) Toyoda was the founder. I don't know if this explains why that pump has Toyoda on it, but Toyota mave have sold units to Land Rover, and said, "this how you do it, Mardell-san".
Quality engineering & brilliant hydraulic block fabrication. I can't believe someone has been moaning about Robin working. Probably someone who lives and sleeps with earbuds or headphones and their sensitive little ears can't handle hammering. Loved Robins critique on the tool weld. Thanks, Christian & and Vera, for another Sunday video
Trust me I’m English and been in Germany for 10 years if you cut the grass on a Sunday someone will report you ,it’s even illegal to wash your car at home
It all depends on your neighbours😅 not sure how it is in the UK, but my UK followers write me up when I say the f word😅🙋♀️
Wow, what an amazing job you guys have done. I would have taken the hydraulic hose to a specialist shop and had them swap the end fittings over because I dont have a machine shop in the kitchen 😁😜all sounds good now and let's hope the steering knuckles completely silence the job👍🏻I needed my LR Time fix so much today that I was watching your overlanding in Switzerland video with the Forts and the switchbacks (again)whilst waiting for this one to go live 😁see you next Sunday
Oh, there is no offroading in Switzerland, that is all in France and Italy. 😃👍🙋♀️
@@Vera_and_Christian lol so it was the last legal gravel roads one. I saw Alps and automatically wrote down Switzerland 😆
Highly skilled intelligent guy ….. wish some of the main LR dealers were the same
Hydraulic Hose.....if you took the old pipes to a hydraulic hose specialist, they would replace the flexible sections of the original ones for around €10 per 15cm section.
The EU3/4 issue, again the hose specialist would cut the compression band from the wrong hose to allow the correct end and then compress a new band to the section of rubber holding it.
Exactly!
I am 100% certain that this does not work. There is not a single piece of standard hose or fitting on this car. The compression band is part of the fitting and not of the hose. No way to repair these. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian If it can be made to start with, it can be remade. Started in the automotive trade in the early 80's and worked all over the world, when I was a mechanic in Antarctica we repaired all our own hoses by carefully cutting off the old crimping and then replacing the hose and putting new crimps on.
I remember a AC hose on my L322 going in France and it was only the rubber section that had rubbed though, the new LR hose was €180. I went to several really unhelpful hose specialists in France who didn't want to know...in the end I posted it back to my Dad in Wales who went to the local hydraulic specialist and it was repaired within 20 min using my original metal sections and replacing the damaged rubber... total cost including postage back to France was less than €45.
I'll have a bet with you Christian, if it's only the rubber section you are worried about (no damage to the metal sections) post me the hose and I'll get it repaired here in Wales and post it back to you at my own cost. If I can get it done, it'll cost you a Tee Shirt. Brenden
@@Vera_and_Christian I recently took all my P38 hydraulic lines (transmission, engine oil, and steering) to a local hydraulics shop, and they brazed new barbs to the original metal pipes, so they could use standard flexible hoses and crimp fittings. Next time it will be an easy job to replace just the rubber and crimps. Cost was significantly below even Britpart.
0:30 The fact that you demonstrated the *whining noise* and felt the need to put a text overlay that explains when we are hearing sounds from Vera, not the whining servo pump..... ;)
Whatever the vehicle throws up, nice to see the pair of you smiling through it.
Hi, yet another good-to-watch episode today. As an ex-engineer for my 40 years In AERO parts making, I become more alert to Christian`s workshop expertise. They say you can judge how must a guy does at work by the swarf left on the machine and floor. Real Engineers look at a product and notice more of how it was machined rather than how the part works or Is Integrated into the assembly. Don't Tell Christian he Is so damn clever Vera eh - LOL. Thanks both for a watchable video.
😅👍🙋♀️
Toyota was originally called Toyoda back in their original start up company. I found that out in my short employment with a Toyota dealer.
Excellent video - I am always amazed at Christian's ingenuity - designing and making that adaptor - amazing! Though I was happy to hear how reliable you late Discovery 4 is - it gives me hope with mine.
Now I have to go dashboard diving in my D4 - Amazon have just delivered some grabbing tools today. I have been swapping the internal lights for LED from PowerfulUK and Land Rover did not plug in the passenger footwell light in properly when it was made. The old light worked, but the connector fell off as I removed the old light and I now have to go searcing with grabbers in the hole to try and retreive it. Wish me luck...
Good afternoon Vera & Christian 😊 Another great video working on Vera’s precious LR3 👍🏻 Love how protective she’s is about it and how Christian treats it so well 🤩 Kisses for Vera 😘🏴
Well done. I replaced my A/C compressor in my D4’s - 10-12 hours!!!! Major pain in the butt
How wonderful it is to be able to use tools from your Dad. I have the same situation, not as technical, but every time i pick up a tool i inherited from my Dad, now longer with us, i get a good feeling. Thank you Christian. You have given me good memories.
Thanks. Never give those tools away. Christian
No way. Too many good memories. @@Vera_and_Christian
How funny, my favorite Sunday morning show is tackling power steering whilst I'm up at 4a getting ready to swap the the entire power steering system, rack and all, in a Chrysler that's going to take at least half a day
That skinny flex ratchet from Harbor Freight is one of my favorite and most used tools.
Brilliant film again, danke schön!
Robin needs a Freelander 2 for his business, and more LR content!😉
Good idea!
Amazing machining skills and being able to come up with the design of that bracket is impressive.
I can’t believe that part has Toyota written on it, another great video
Another excellent video with yet another Apollo 13 fix. Now back to looking at my Landcruiser and drinking coffee
Goodness me, did I hear you right? DO NOT SELL THE DISCO 3! What a debacle, OMG. Great video and improvisation Christian. That bracket is another work of art, perhaps not so that DIY spanner, shame! Wonderful entertainment for a Sunday morning.
When replacing a rack or power steering pump its worth replacing the oil reservoir because it contains a non replaceable filter in the bottom. 👍
Yes, we have a separate video on that and our reservoir is fairly new. 👍🙋♀️
Greetings from a Brit in Bonn! Just 'Discovery'd' your channel and have fallen in love with your videos. Great to watch, hugely entertaining and I've learned so much about Toyotas from Christian :)
How Christian says 'we need a bracket' or 'we need to machine it' is like reliving the bracket theme on Bad Obsession Motorsport who put a TOYOTA engine in a Mini. Because 'why not?'. I was only 12 when they started and I am 76 now ... 🤣🤣
Oh and I have fixed all the coolant and water leaks on the p38. Yaay!
👍
Get yourself a Range Rover Sport with leaker active sway bars. Make sure that it has filled with water after heavy rain and all the electrics have died. Cheap, and a lot of work to fix!
Absolutely brilliant stuff, just another day of work in the garage and WOW what a great workshop,, awesome watching ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland
You guys are amazing engineers.
Thanks again for another brilliant episode!
Amazing machining thanks for the video.
My mind is boggled! I have no idea what Christian was doing in his machine shop but it was bloody impressive! IF I was there I think they would just tell me to make the sandwiches and tea.
Incredible job once again
Incredible machining of that piece ! Thn again for this great video and enjoy your Sunday !
Wow! (as usual).
Rather worrying that the correct parts were out of stock - but fortunately for your LR3 you have a Christian fabrication specialist on site!
Looking forward to seeing you next Sunday too...
Those wonderful Harbour Freight double ended felxible ratchet are so useful on Land Rover and Range Rovers. I have two and I am located in New Zealand. I picked mine up in California when I got one for a garage owner who had broken his as he used it all the time on Toyotas. I even used mine today doing the Transmission filter upgrade on my Range Rover Sport 2007 ZF 6H26 trans.
💪💪🙋♀️
Good morning happy Sunday as always looking forward to the video 👍👍👍
Fantastic milling job!
You guys are so fun. Love the custom bracket! Imagine if someone in the future is working on that LR3 and notices the power steering pump...."WTF???" ha ha ha.
Nice job and a great modification 👍👍
Wonderful as always, well done guys, amazing as always ❤
Great job Christian good job you know how to make things.😀😀😀
Simply brilliant 😊
Thanks for another great entertaining video, iit would be good to see some more of Robin's work 📹🔨
Sunday morning Verio and C show! What a great video today (actually always) I really enjoyed watching and learning (sort of) keep em coming ! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Excellent update, thankyou
The lr3 is the content gift that keeps on giving isnt it 😊
Just finished watching 6 hours of LR Time and this pops up ❤
😳😅👌💪🙏🙋♀️
Cristian, what a great designer and engineer you can turn your hand to anything. well done both another great video.
Another great video guys. Genius ! Enjoyed watching 👍🏼👍🏼
Well done guys lovely start to my day full English and LR Time 👍 Great video well done
I am almost convinced I can buy run and fix a disco 4 with the all the content you guys put on
Oh boy, as long is it's running 😅👍 🙋♀️
Great video again. I love it when you hit a problem and come up with something to resolve it. I sometimes do it myself however if I had a workshop like Christian I could do a lot more. keep up the good work..
giving warm shout outs to Vera. She has wonderful personality and commentary on videos. Christian has remarkable skills creating special parts!! Plus, the background sounds are perfectly fine!! I am one, that does not mind. I enjoy knowing your son is hard at work and trying to master his skills. Very well done. Merci
😃👌🙏🙋♀️
Basically, when you rebuild a LandRover discovery, replace everything! It's like the mop I have had for 20 years! It's only had five heads and two handles!
That is just crazy. Your skill is amazing. To even think you could MAKE a conversion part....wow. Well done sir.
I've been driving land rovers since the 90s, and one thing they are reliable on is keeping you busy. Wouldn't be without one, thou.
👌💪🙋♀️
Wow,wow, wow. The Land Rover Doctor.brilliant video. The content is first class. Take my hat off to you.
Great work guys🏴🏴🏴
I don't go to Church! I watch LR Time instead! Oh my God! Amen!
Above and Beyond Religion !
Another excellent Sunday video. My hat is off to you again ... superb engineering solution .. I may need a new hat soon 🤠
😂👍thanks
Very nice work
Nice piece of engineering, Christian. I recall using such a boring head when I was an apprentice!
Christian, you are such a creative engineer, making the modified part for the power steering pump, if i knew i could have scaled the barbed wire fence & got you the right part from Solihull & sent it over, great to see Robin at work, tell him to start his own channel, has he seen the woman blacksmith on youtube 'Path of Fire'
Please, please do an LR Time toolbox tour video - i.e. Christian and Veras top tools for dealing with LR debacles - just standard hand tools, brands, quality etc. (not home made tools though - they are very special)
I replaced the power steering pump last fall. Struggled for over an hour with the infamous rear bolt until I undid the left engine mount bolt, which allowed me to lift the left side of the engine a couple cm. It made it so much easier to turn the bolt with a swivel joint socket. I would very much recommend doing the same. Although maybe not jack the engine up by the oil pan like I did. 😅
Very good idea 👍
Nice work Christian,
Reminds me of s freelander Lhd i brought for use in Spain.
Steering seemed a bit heavy , but drove it down to spain and the looked at it.
Found out a Polish gent had converted a rhd to lhd because they sell better however he inverted the old steering rack and bodged the hoses by using a piece of 12mm aircon pipe , which caused a restriction and the heavy steering.
Cost me 250 euros euro for lhd hoses and a used rack from italy 150 euros to fix.
Much better watching you work though!
Just sold my d3 hse as the bank balance and uk tax snd insurance are killing me!
Tell Vera to hang on to hers.... it a mean d3
Best regards
Alan
Gald I am NOT a desktop mechanic! Thanks for another educational video.
Desk top mechanics 😂😂 l love watching you guys
There is a very useful business near me that can make up bespoke hydraulic and fuel hoses. They would have been very able to modifying that hydraulic hose to fit. They mostly work on agricultural vehicles, but also do car stuff, a nice business to have nearby.
I wish we would have a shop like this in Germany. Christian
I love Land Rover /Range Rover but I also love Citroen 2CV , no cooling system , no ecu , no head gasket . And lots of room to work under the bonnet. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Christian the AC equipment is quite cheap to buy.
Got all mine second hand for £200.
You need a recovery compressor, vacuum pump, a gauge and hose set and an old empty R134a or R1234 gas bottle.
And some PAG oil
Bob's yer uncle 😊
Thank you.
Incredible work 👏👏👏 I’m thinking Vera & Christian need to be at the top of the survival pyramid 🙏🏼
😅👍🙋♀️
What a fantastic watch!
New subscriber, binge watched last year compulsive watching.
Please keep them!
All the best Christian and Vera.
David.
Ps old LR owner series 3, ( analog not digital) !
😃👍🙋♀️
Sunday Super Content 😎
Great job Vera and Christian! The pipe block was a work of art Christian, even if it took two attempts! The automatic advance boring head of your dad's is a very nice piece of no doubt German engineering. All in all a good piece of content for the channel.
Thanks. I am very proud of this tool and never swa one like it on CZcams. Christian
And it has such a nice name: "Wohlhaupter" (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wohlhaupter)
My very first idea was that custom repaired hydraulics lines are used in farmer equipment, and you could ask your friends to make one with better quality than LR OEM and without that struggle.
This is all non-standard stuff and stainless steel too. Hard to fix. Christian
A sad moment finding a problem. Then a tough repair followed by sadder emotion when selling the vehicle was mentioned. Then a happy result. (I was going to say ending but that may be taken the wrong way):)
Also very good video work Vera. Very difficult in confined spaces and varying light.
Agh i Love our D3. Thank you lovely people.
This is really helpful. Mine for over a year will make a loud groan when reversing at full lock. Lower arms probably are close to replacement (again) but everything else feels tight but I have same kms 291,000 as you so watching with great interest. Other than sway bar drop links and lower arms everything else is original.
There will be a suspension video on my Disco 3 in the next weeks. You may find that interesting.👍🙋♀️
Christian, I was a little offended by the comment about Toyota drivers doing videos making coffee.
It was somewhat stereotypical, not all Uber reliable Land Cruiser owners sit around drinking coffee. I own a Land Cruiser and I sit around drinking tea.
Ok, sorry. But we did not refer to the drivers. We pointed towards (most) CZcamsrs driving Toyota. They show how to make coffee in most of their vidoes. They also sit around the barn fire or cook something. Then they drive around a lot with drone shots and musik. Not much happening in those videos. I am not talking about Ronny Dahl for sure. LR CZcamsrs got car trouble in every third video. Less coffee and food cooking. LOL. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian I was just pulling your leg Christian.
No offence was taken.
Great video and a wonderful piece of fabrication.
What we don't see is Vera snacking every half hour, she's always hungry. OMG really?
It seems like every job on a Discovery would be easy if it's an engine out job 😅 great video as usual 👍
Absolutely, if there would just not be the airconditioning. 😅👍🙋♀️
@@Vera_and_ChristianI expect your very busy with your channel. Its really appreciated you taking the time to reply to the comments, many out there don't bother.
Excellent engineering sir 👍👍(oh my god) 🙈
I love my wife ,but I wish I had wife like yours lol
She's so into it and supportive .Prost love the channel 🍺🍺
😅🙋♀️
Very nice 👍 👍
you probably know this, and i'm no desktop mechanic, but i've found a bit of warm water and some fairy liquid helps get difficult pipes to slip on. Great video as usual, love the machining!
Great....coffee ☕ time has come bang on time...🙂
You pair certainly have a happy marriage , another great video to watch
