This gives me the idea to do a syntropic system with manure and things added, and then one that's just raw on degraded land for simple accumulation. I've noticed in my system here, not knowing exactly how things are going to perform it can be costly financially and energy wise to be putting everything in at one time and then perhaps it has to get reworked or something and it was all for nothing.... also the skepticism of starting planting this way, you kind of do it with uncertainty as one is learning

Hey Scott, I love your videos. You asked me to send in an email but I still haven't had a response to join. I'm doing syntropic in Kenya and making content for here, but I would love love love to learn more about consortiums, placentas, and getting to an accumulation phase while maximizing harvests and not just having all support species - because it's a hard sell to get anyone to commit to that without any food along the way. I would really love to take you up on your offer so I just wanted to reply here again

Yes sir! I learned the hard way doing some small scale homesteading that it makes no sense to try it all by yourself, community, interdependance. I highly recomend the book ”fields of farmers” by Joel Salatin. (As all of his other books as well..) He explains the trouble with old farmers being stuck on the land and younger generations not having the money to buy themselves into a farm and offers good ideas to overcome those problems. I'm also using Napier grass here because Mombasa grass won't grow and I decided instead of just having that for biomass, I should have something in there with it than just kikuyu grass, so I planted bracharia in it too. I planted tithonia diversifolia in my tree lines, and comfrey around the borders of my annual lines to test that out. Edit: Wow just as I typed that out you said you had comfrey as an edge too. I saw on a permaculture channel that staggered comfrey forms such a strong rhizome barrier that even grass can't pass through, so I always kept that in mind as a natural barrier.

Did you plant a cold hardy Macadamia variety? Coastal southwestern Portugal has a similar climate and should also work for Macadamia then.

Fascinating & clear demonstration of kicking off a productive system in a difficult location. Thanx heaps. Inspiring! .. working on a property for decades now in a subtropical area myself - but surrounded by world heritage rainforest closer to the coast - I'd have to comment that some of the species used in this video seem very inappropriate to where I'm located as being serious woody weeds that are being actively removed by local landcare group as threatening sensitive natural ecosystems nearby etc .. that being said completely agree we need skilful observation & knowledge based agri--eco-systems that build soils & feed our animals & ourselves while enriching & watering our landscapes .. Great video Scott. How often would you prune the support species once they get established? Small resets throughout the year, or hard resets about twice a year during autumn and spring?

Are you never afraid of getting bitten by a snake in that under story? 😅

The secret with forest gardening: prepare a small piece of land, put down various seeds for food (vegetables including onions and tomatoes) you use regularly at home as long as they are healthy for you. Don't try to nurse ones that are struggling, rather capitalise on the ones that are flourishing and ditch the struggling ones; at the same time start a small nursery of fruit, medicinal trees and herbs. Onces they are grown at enough height to get sunshine in your vegetable garden, bring them in into within your vegetable garden and replace the ones that don't do well with what does well. This will build up your food forest quickly. I like to eat from my food forest very quickly. Bananas ans papaya will produce fruits quite fast. And cassava is usually of less care.

Do you have issues with subterranean masti termites.? A major hurdle for us in NT.

Thank you for sharing, in my first syntropic system here, I basically planted napier grass with bracharia, planted a cover crop hodge podge in the rows for chop and drop.... and then went straight into eucalyptus , banana, gliricidia, leucaena, mexican sunflower, pineapples etc. I think I took more of a food forest approach and missed out on cycle leading/building, and placenta 1 and 2 and understanding the advanced consortiums and options in syntropic agroforestry. I had a lot of success, but those are the areas I can improve upon the most.

Congratulations Scott. Just to be clear, the main breakthrough is the discovery that you don't have to push for trees. You can add later, even in placenta II when you make a pruning and they will bust into the system. Is that correct?

I'm in Kenya and really trying to learn more and up my syntropic knowledge. I've been putting all the free videos I can find into practice, best I can, but looking forward to being able to learn more formally later when finance and time allows

Have not watched you before. We do a similar thing. Pigeon peas and QLD arrowroot were our base . We have a lot of bananas. But my question to you is would things work like they are currently if we go back into serious drought? The last 7-8 months have been the best growing season with huge amounts of rain. Our bananas were decimated when we bought this place because they had no irrigation and had been a two year drought.

Thanks for the video. I’m going to look into the course to understand the terminology used in the video. I live in a completely different climate as you, high desert southwest US, but many of of the principals must be transferable.

Hello! Greetings from Guatemala. Thanks for this valuable information! I have four acres of this elephant grass, but I have no cows or anyone to give it away or sell it to. It has behaved for years as an invasive species, it covers more and more, it almost covers the entire terrain. Additionally I want to convert this area into a cultivable area for other various edible crops. How can I eradicate this grass? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Scott thanks for the insights. One thing I often wonder about is flowering of the crop. I have planted several temperate syntropic systems and there aren’t that many resources for me to learn from in the temperate context. I often hear syntropic practitioners talking about preventing flowering in support species to keep the pulse of growth going - how do we manage the flowering of the crop species?

I love all the farmers you mentioned. I definitely have followed some of them extensively and still watch farmer Jesse often. He takes a very scientific approach, which I appreciate. However check out the work of Jim Kovaleski. He was a nomadic farmer, farming in Maine in Summer and Florida in winter. In Florida he applies a thick cover of woody compost mulch supplied by his city soil twice a year. Then in Maine he feeds his soil with grass he scythes He is the truth and uses very little commercial inputs and is a great farmer. I learned from Dr Elaine Ingham how to make great compost and she insists on covering your compost in some manner. Cover plants of perennials is her preferred method but farmer Jesse has trialed that to no avail. Living pathways that supply large amounts of biomass is a method that farmer Jesse has used well. You can't turn on a light bulb without a battery, similarly it looks like you need the biomass established first before you plant your crop and you don't load the system with too much crop
