the ethics of Baby Reindeer
I finally watched Baby Reindeer. As a therapist, a lot of you were keen for me to make a psychological analysis but I think it's better to look at this from an ethical point of view. What does the show teach and what are the positives and the negatives of its reaction?

I felt so seen when Donny starts doing shameful things after his traumatic events. It made me feel less like crap about myself over the things I’ve done from my own trauma. What he was doing made me feel normal such as questioning his sexuality and becoming attracted to his stalker. It’s very hard to make out your reality and it disrupts everything!!!

I think you're right that Ilyn Payne does represent death in the ephemeral and literal sense for Sansa, and he sort of represents a critical traumatic event. But also in the sense that he represents the death of her worldview. I think that's at least in part because of the Northern ideology that when a lord issues an execution they carry it out by their own hand because that's the honorable thing to do. I think Sansa could have flexed her own perception enough to believe that execution was a fitting punishment in some circumstances, but in the South that punishment is carried out by the "kings justice" - it just makes Ned's death a deeper humiliation.

Jon choosing love over the right politics with Dany could've been so much better if they never cut Satin from the show. A reason why Jon is killed in the books is because he appoints Satin as Lord Steward despite barely being at the wall a year. Yes, Satin is one of the few people in the watch that can read, but Jon appointed the pretty femboy to be his right-hand man for more than just his ability to read. Jon chooses Satin because he has a crush on Satin in the books. And this is indicative of the greater issue with show Jon. D&D taking away what makes Jon a complex character. The fact he is in a constant battle of wanting so much, but always being reminded of his greater duty, only for a letter to arrive that crosses a line. It's just another reason why I am convinced D&D disliked books 4 and 5. I even doubt they read them in full

I love how you condem (see what I did there?) the prison system for treating convicted felons like animals and scum. Are there innocent people in prison? Avbsolutely. Are they anywhere near the majority. Absolutely not. For the rest, every person in prison represents injured, killed, damaged victims. You may argue a car thief doesn't hurt anyone. But you're wrong. You get up to go to work in the morning and your car's gone. You could lose your job, you have to buy a new car, you could have an emergency where you needed that car. People in prison? F'em. Imagine the story again but this time Andy's guilty. Now imagine the story again, and he's not only guilty but of a wrose crime. Straight up murder for greedy reasons. Still the romantic story of hope vs. fear? Yes, it is. But your liberal sympathies lose their thin veneer of morality.

  • @milo_thatch_incarnate

This is the absolute best take on this controversy. As a young woman who used to be very much like Allison and am now much more comfortable without my "armor", this is how I always saw her transformation, and it saddens me that a lot of people act like her arc is "conformity". That's NOT it. She's not hiding herself anymore, she's willing to connect and be vulnerable, just like you said, which is SO healthy. I love this "makeover reveal" moment for her. Andy isn't like "woah, you're actually hot, I had no idea" -- he's like "Woah, I was already falling for who you are, and now I can see that you're even more beautiful than I thought you were." That's precious.

  • @milo_thatch_incarnate

As a young woman, it's sad to me that so many people here are going on and on about how the "makeover" was so terrible. Maybe you don't like the switch from goth to girly, fine. But _everyone_ looks more beautiful when they look _open_ and _happy,_ and _that's_ what they were going for. Her hair is out of her face, and she doesn't look like she's _hiding_ from everyone anymore. It expresses _confidence._ The lighter makeup represents allowing her gentler side to show, which is also healthy and beautiful. And switching from baggy, misshapen, oversized, ugly layers of clothing to something that _fits_ her also represents her feeling comfortable enough in her own skin to not _hide_ it. Those are all good things!! Maybe you think the clothing choice is too girly, but the MESSAGE is a great one.

In the montage it looks like Nate becomes a coach again. I think this makes sense as Nate does fill a void in their team. But I do think they made him assistant to the kit man for a sense of penance, especially since there was only 1 match left against Nates former team. Making Nate a coach again for Ted would sour the victory. Richmond winning because the old head left and went back to his original team. The billionaire has a new paper artical in the airport saying how his league idea busts. In an AMA they say Sam made it on due to public outcry. I think its not a stretch that the billionaire was embarrassed and shunned off as some "spoiled rich kid" and lost a lot of pull with leaders once his stunt at making a super league fell through.

General practitioners are like taking your problems and talking to a brick wall half the time. Mental health treatment is a ridiculous cost for a lot of people, neglected in the budget by governments and intial appointments shouldn't have therapists trying to poke a nerve as a starting point trying to learn more about you.

I think Tony looking at the statue was him contemplating his own vulnerability at his first therapy session. His not yet diagnosed anxiety was something coming out and the timing of Dr Melfi letting him in the room distracted the anxiety enough to possibly prevent him from changing his mind and walking away.

Definitely agree with a lot of your points, especially about Piers exploiting the situation further and turning everything into a spectacle. However, I must admit I watched the interview and it's quite clear that she does have some form of dangerous personality disorder, along with possible comorbidities which is sad in itself. And yes Gadd/Netflix failed in their duty of care but in their defense they might have simply underestimated just how popular the show would become. It's difficult to predict these things until a show actually airs and Gadd/Netflix never encouraged anyone to become detectives. It's clear that Fiona is dangerous/has some kind of personality disorder so approaching her before the show's making probably wasn't wise. The conviction is a grey area because Gadd's stated that never happened. In the credits of episode 7 it does say "based on a true story" but it's hard to miss. Netflix misled audiences to lure in viewers. It's likely Fiona might still have grounds to sue for defamation but Netflix will probably just settle because...it's Netflix. Also, it's painfully clear that Gadd has both PTSD/CPTSD as all of his interactions with Martha/Fiona made very clear. Shame and low self-esteem are just two of the symptoms.
