Netflix is going big on its live action adaptation of Avatar The Last Airbender but whether or not it actually works depends on some very fine margins. This videoessay discusses the genuine potential for this adaptation but also analysis on all of the dangers and what it will take to navigate them.

I know I've heard a lot of people concerned that they're changing Sokka's arc so that he doesn't begin as sexist and, to be honest, this change doesn't bother me. I like that in his arc, it's interesting and different to what TV normally tackles but it's hardly the emotional core of the show or his character. I'm concerned as to what they'll replace it with, sure, but that original arc itself isn't a hill I'm going to die on.
The biggest red flag to me is still the original creators leaving due to creative differences. That and the creators of this show saying they want to appeal to the Game of Thrones crowd.
Dgmw, I love Thrones. However Avatar is not and should not be Thrones.
The creators left long before all the scripts were done and two of the scripts they wrote themselves were used. And all the showrunners meant by game of thrones is how big the world feels and maybe a little bit more realistic combat. They didn't say sex scenes and f bombs and incest.

the biggest red flag to me is you guys thinking the creators of this show are infallable writers. They originally wanted toph to be a huge buff guy and they were going to make aang have a love triangle. They were NOT responsible for majority of the writing on the show and many of the writers made changes to their original show that made it not shit. They were behind legend of korra and it was mid. The comics? mid. They were literally on set and approved the shamalan movie. They try to distance themselves from the movie but they were on set, approved the cast, and even approved the name changes. There's video evidence of this. Them leaving has very little bearing on whether the show will be good.
@@nifferwolf People took the game of thornes words to seriously, what they mean is that they will show stuff the cartoon never did and could not because it was a Nickelodeon show. Zuko getting burned and the air genocide etc. Personally i like that alot.
I just don’t understand why zukos scar is never done right. It looks like a bruise or a birthmark here. You could barely even see it at all in the m night one. Burns are gory, they take the longest to heal. I know netflix usually want to have their characters easy to look at but at the same time, cmon they even kept his eyebrow. It’s a big part of his character
I have been commenting this in every video. The brutality of his scar tells us a lot about firelord before we even meet him, the scar they gave him can be fixed with makeup 😂

@@genericname2747 and even more importantly the skin is way too smooth for how discolored the scar is. It really shouldn’t even be so dark no matter how bad the burn was, the most altered thing about the skin should be the texture and not the color, which they got completely backwards. GoT did a much more realistic job with the hounds facial burn scar like a decade and a half ago, it’s annoying it’s like they didn’t even research what burn scars even look like

Why they got azula using weapons??? I don't think we ever seen her pick a weapon up in the show. She IS the weapon
Its probably a one time thing, maybe a flashback of her and Zuko in a class or her proving how good she is at everything. I don't think they would make such a radical and questionable change like this.
If you look closely she's firing next to others, she's probably just training for basic royal schooling. Just another way to show how determined, perfectionistic, precise, and deadly she is while fleshing out what she and Ozai were up to during season 1.

Also, about the length of the new series: 8 hour-long episodes is about 21 episodes of the original 22-minute length format. They still have enough time to adapt the majority of Book 1 if they want to.
They do have the time, but it won't work because some of the episodes are their own thing and are hardly connected to the actual plotline which wouldn't work with 1-hour episodes. So, they're cutting them and expanding on existing main episodes, that's pretty much confirmed at this point.

@@queenb2450 funny because this direct quote says otherwise. Albert Kim: ..a very important character point is that despite everything and all the burdens he's facing, Aang is just a kid. He's a goofy 12- year-old kid, and he's having fun and he's a big old goofball. And we wanted to make sure that we showed that because that's as important to the story as all the action and the epic fantasy of it all.
Am I the only one that thinks the bending looks weak af? Even sozins comet-fueled fire bending looks weaker than regular fire bending from the original

Overall I’m optimistic. The only thing that has me worried so far is the comments they’ve made that they’ve removed Sokka’s sexism which is… a choice? Because it was his main arc at the start of the story beyond wanting to fight better.
It concerns me because it seems a massive misunderstanding of his character and a misguided concern over the potential audience.
I honestly want to know what makes you optimistic about this movie, I really do.

Ozai's manipulation of Azula, also they never said they would take out Sokka sexism(which lasted a total of 4 episodes) they just said he wouldn't be AS sexist. I've seen the show dozens of times and his sexism is the last thing I think about in regards to his growth. They already show a scene of Suki teaching Sokka so he obviously will get a humbling moment. They can also show cool aspects of the air nomads and show how the fire nation got the jump on them. The possibilities are endless. So for me, I'm cautiously optimistic but still think there will be se great moments. The Iive action TV show is also longer than all of season 1 so there will be plenty of things they can expand upon.

I foresee a repeat of Disney+ 'Percy Jackson' series, where it makes more of an effort to be a better adaptation than the movie... while also still leaving out a lot from the book and changing things for seemingly no reason, creating a disappointing final product.

Great video! I like the points you bring up. The things that worry me are the fact that the original show runners are not a part of it. And how the people in charge of the live-action are saying things like "we are trying to appeal to a GOT audience" like.... What???
Just keep in mind that you and a whole creative team have different ideas of what a GOT audience means, it may be good it may be bad, may be the serious bits maybe the more grounded/war - tragedy, i wouldnt mind of they have a deeper tone and expanded themes akin to got, lets just wait to judge until it comes out, not before, that will sour the experience before it even starts

@sketchtheparadigmyork1217 they could adapt it 1:1 and its most epic moments would trump GOT. The Day of Black Sun is easily more epic than GOT's failed beach invasion at Blackwater.
One thing I need to know is why the hell was a live action remake even neccesary, the medium of animation massively benefitted the story,
(not to mention you are 100% in control of an animation and how it looks and you can do so much more with the fight scenes and the elemental effects)
Imagine if they re did the comics and the novels as an adult animation project in the vain of arcane. Or even animate the kyoshi novels. Now that would be fire (pun very much intended)
I don't know why they're doing a live action series when there are roughly a bazillion avatars that could all have fully realized shows like Kora. Why not do fire born Avatar and earth born Avatar shows? I'd be much more interested in exploring the world more.
Wouldn’t generate enough viewership which is what Netflix is trying to aim at plus I truly feel ATLA is catching lightning in a bottle I don’t think so far anybody can further along the world building while still keeping its roots of the original *cough cough* Korra
I know plenty of people who would never watch the original series because it's an animated kid's show. This live action version will introduce the world of Avatar to a new audience. I'm looking forward to seeing what they change or expand upon.
This is not from the original studio, its a netflix adaptation. The Avatar Studio said they are actively working on their next animated project!

Right? I would have rather have a new animated Avatar show with a new Avatar protagonist taking place after Korra's time than a live action retelling.
Had a long conversation with my coworkers about this last night. Honestly, I can see us getting some cool action sequences and interesting scenes, but nothing that could live up to or out-do the original series. It was animated for a reason, and even the original creators have left to form their own studio to work on new *animated* projects. They’re having to cut so much out that I can’t imagine the original episodic fun of the series will be maintained, and if the show is just “your favorite main plots points from ATLA,” then it doesn’t feel like a worthwhile adaption.
The original series has room to improve, and I think that includes Sokka’s (and Katara’s) sexism to some extent, but it doesn’t seem like they’re actually going to do that.
There is a bunch they can do that the series didn't touch on.. Ozai's manipulation of Azula, Iroh's relationship with Ozai how exactly the fire nation got the jump on the Airbenders.. I think people need to breathe and just wait for the show to come out. The love action show is longer than all of season 1 so there might be some fun things in it the cartoon didn't touch on
Honestly, the main thing I'm excited about, regardless how the adaptation turns out, is seeing the familiar characters, locations and animals in a different high budget light. Mainly the CGI, because there's lots of room there.

You made great points and I loved your train opening! Another thing that I’m a bit worried about is the new voices for the characters. We’ve heard the main cast of characters speak. As in team avatar and zuko and I like how they all sound but I’m still worried yet about Iroh. The actor playing him seems like a good fit and his look is great! But I haven’t heard the wise old yet goofy Iroh yet. Another big character for me is Bumi and I’m really hoping his craziness still comes through. I will leave off by praising the voice of Sokka with the actor noticeably taking from the OG show
The actor who plays Iroh is the funniest guy ever! He’s in my one of my favourite shows called Kim’s convenience. I’m actually looking forward too the live action because of him. I don’t know about Bumi though
On the subject of is there a reason to make this? Albert Kim, the showrunners, asked the same question. He said "what's the point? Why fix what's not broken?" But ultimately his decision to make it came down to his realization that this would be a fantastic vehicle for Asian and Indigenous representation, to allow kids of those backgrounds to see people that look like them in an epic fantasy. To me, that's reason enough.

I like when people are positive and... no i don't like it. I like that people are holding out hope and that means they wish for better days but the fact that reality stares them in the face and everyone refuses to see it even though under their breath its as plain as can be. NOTHING as of late has EVER rose to the occasion and blown us out of the water. I mean Ashoka was good but not great. They played it safe and that is NOT the norm. The Norm is they think they know better than the show creators and writers. They dont realise there own ego that they were hired by morons to RE create a show that made MULA so they copy the same thing. Then change things to make it look like they are not copying cuz their ego wont allow it. but they are so stupid that they dont realise what made the show great. They think that because they are coming later they know more, they know better! That their decisions are better. They dont know that they dont know what makes a story good. Since the entire premise of bringing a beloved masterpiece back to life is to make money they think like all the rest tehat if you slap the name on it and make it flashy itll still make MULA. That their changes will make it even better, they don't even know why they made those changes. Its all guided by erogance. Zuko's actor is soft and doesnt have the hardness that made me wanna say Jeese Zuko calm down. He's weak. They thin k making Saka NOT sexist is better cuz it wont offend women. But he was better because the Kioshi warriors have humbled his dumb ass, and he became a better warrior, it also made him humble in front of his sword master so he could master that. He does not accomplish much if he doesn learn from a very bad character flaw. Aang still sound like Shamalans Aang too serious and not as goofie. Truth is(no one is going to read this) that ca;pitalism has made studios scared of taking creative riskes anymore so their dumb ass suit non creative mentality thinks copy formula rinse repeat and itll all work and make money. Im glad big money is trying all these stupid moves leaves room for us real creators to be seen. Good luck everyone but know that this WILL suck just like every other IP that pushed the creators away or though they knew more. Do your own thing and let us let the past die and move on to new things!
Great video I am atleast hopeful about this series it definitely is going to need that balance between darkness and lighter moments to keep the essence of the original
I think I would have preferred a 3rd series that separated itself from the last airbender or korra possibly I am not sure its I think it might be hard to get lightning to strike the same thing twice I think the idea of a more dark series would be interesting but at the same time give it air to breathe a bit I think a lot of shows speed the pace up and create an intensity around the drama that sometimes feels overwhelming and if left unchecked loses it luster and becomes unbelievable or unrealistic losing its weight I really value that breathing room it breaks it up and allows for more character development and attachment something the original series did really well in this case thats what I miss the most in more modern shows let me relax in the company of characters that make me feel good rather than make me bite my nails on the edge of my seat by all means still give them flaws and a problem to solve byt let me appreciate them in multiple dimensions

Im always concerned when i see a remake of an already very successful and well loved story. As a hardcore Tolkien nerd Rings of Power was a blow for me. The live action of Avatar may br able to pull in more of an audience particularly for people that aren't animation/animie fans. I myself didnt even watch Avatar until this year becuase I just dont really care for animie, then I got the flu for a week and thought what the hell and I binged all 3 seasons in 2 days because its jut such a good story and characters.
Azula's character will be the hardest to pull off. The original voice actress was amazing, but the character is only 14, and she made her character seem more adultish. I don't think an actual 14 can pull it off the same way. They'll have to make her a little more quietly sinister.
Feels like we're all just waiting....we'll see. Hope it's good....fear it'll be bad. Kind've like I feel when a new Star Wars movie comes out. I'm usually disappointed....but sometimes....sometimes it doesn't completely suck

I know shouldn’t judge the show before it’s even out but I am because i have some concerns I’ve already heard that the writers are gonna cut out Sokkas sexism arc where he learns to not be sexist which is a big part of his character development and Azulas be in the show more and from season 1 I have a problem with this because there will be too many villains in the first season and it doesn’t make any sense story wise because Azula meant to be the villain of the second she’s introduced in the second season because Zuko fails to capture Aang and another concern I have is Zukos redemption arc being ruined and I’ve already seen signs of this in the trailer they going to have Zhao burn down the village instead of Zuko and I’m worried they are going to give all Zukos terrible actions to Zhao and make good Zuko from the beginning and ruining his character and I don’t like them showing the genocide of Aangs people because it’s too disbursing for a live action remake that’s meant to be a remake of a kids show and who wants to see people being burnt alive massacred I don’t I’d rather that it was implied like in the original and they want the show to like Game of thrones

It'll obviously not live up to the animation. Literally no one asked for this. The cgi will probably look nice but character development-wise will maybe not be done as well as the animated series.
Well, they could make a live-action adaptation that looks and feels as animated as the cartoon, but they'd have to hire Edgar Wright for that.

The one thing I don’t agree with you on, is that you talk a lot about the new format of the Netflix show, and how these 8 60min episodes are leaving less time to explore all of season 1.
However, if you do the maths the Netflix shows total runtime (8 episodes x 60 minutes) is exactly 480 mins long, and the original shows runtime (20 total episodes of 23 mins length each ) is exactly 460 minutes long. So no change, and actually there will be a slightly larger amount of time to explore the less action packed side of the series.
Technically yes, that's a very good point but structure wise I think it makes for a much more streamlined focus on the big plot points and character arcs. I think that's where a lot of the time will go

Reducing the show to just 8 episodes is definitely not going to be as adventurous as the animation. My expectations are mid. Definitely not high or low.

The only real troubling bit of news is "gender issues" of Katara that they've supposedly changed up (according to IGN interview). Regardless, just wait for February 15th, that's when the reviews will be out.

they are including things from it. Supposedly it will be from Kyoshi comics about Avatar Kuruk and maybe Kyoshi. But really, there's only so much they can add so it shouldn't be too bad.

Wonka was a great recent movie. I hear the One Piece adaptation was pretty good. Hell, there have been a billion Dickens remakes that I enjoy. It's very understandable when people feel cynical because Hollywood has let us all down so much recently. It hurts to see something we love badly executed...but that doesn't necessarily mean every adaptation will be horrendous or that it's wrong for people to feel excited. Excitement is a good thing generally. It may all come crashing down in a few weeks but I'm certainly not gonna stamp on the fires of another person's passion
