    The Ted Lasso welcome wagon has arrived! I am a counsellor and psychotherapist. Dr Sharon from Ted Lasso is a sports psychologist. I analyze and break down a load of her scenes. Does anyone read these descriptions? Comment if you do, otherwise I might as well just chuck a load of keywords here, like: Ted Lasson season 2, Ted Lasso season 3, psychology, analysis, Nate the Great, Jamie Tartt, therapy...other things...
    My Little Thought Tree is my channel for drawing out the deeper meaning and emotion in film, TV, and the world at large through relaxed, analytical video essays. I am a professional counsellor and often draw on my psychology and therapy background to better understand characters, themes, and emotion in fiction. I upload every Saturday and occasionally on Tuesdays, if I'm feeling productive.

    I’d love to see further Dr. Sharon analysis. I sort of feel like she was pulled around by the writers. In seasons 1 & 2 she oscillates between being insightful and professional, and prickly and unprofessional. Like she’s used as a foil for Ted a lot of the time rather than being allowed to adhere to her own characterisation. Then in season 3 she almost disappears altogether, except for the finale, which still baffles me. I remember reading a quote by Jason Sudeikis around the end of S2 that said Trent and Sharon would be important to S3. Trent was but Sharon was not, so I can only assume they had plans for the character in S3 that got jettisoned for some reason. I think she was missed - in S2 she gave us insight into Ted that was missing in S3. In S3, we saw Ted struggling, but very rarely were we able to hear his thoughts, as he didn’t really talk to anyone about them. In S2 he had Sharon.

    Re the biscuits: years ago I went through several sessions of individual therapy for a mild depression, and as one session was just before Christmas, I brought a jar of homemade jam to give my therapist. She kindly explained that she felt that accepting even a small gift would be unethical, but would pass it along to someone in her family. I respected her boundaries while wondering if all or most therapists are that scrupulous.

    • @mylittlethoughttree
      @mylittlethoughttree  Před 8 měsíci +8

      I think it depends. I'd say most trainings teach you not to accept any gifts AT ALL from clients...buuuuuuuut I think there are a lot of caveats to that. The work can never be as rigid as the training tends to set out because it's all about making authentic connections, even if you have to be careful you're not just becoming "a fun friend" to the people you work with. I would say it depends on the situation and what the gift might mean. I probably would accept a gift like that but I'd also talk to try and gauge why you thought to bring such a thoughtful gift, explain it isn't necessary in the future, maybe discuss possible complications. Personally, I'd still accept it, though. I wouldn't want to give off a feeling of rejection when something is basically just being nice, but I also wouldn't want to set up a dynamic where you might be invited/feel pressure to bring other gifts in the future.

      Therapist here, I was trained to only accept gifts when refusing it would hurt the client counselor relationship, or when it would be harmful to the client in some way (as in more than the client can afford). For bigger gifts that we feel we can't refuse, we have to make a donation of that same dollar amount (or as close as we can estimate) to a mental health charity and document that we have done so. It's never unethical for a client to give a gift but there are a lot of ethics surrounding our ability to accept them! 😅
      Edited to correct my bad spelling

    • @gracehaven5459
      @gracehaven5459 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @mylittlethoughttree right. Similarly, social workers are trained to never accept food at clients houses, because they may feel like they need to feed and host their social worker every visit thereafter. I've accepted water before, maybe lemonade or tea, but that's about it. I always decline food.

    • @mylittlethoughttree
      @mylittlethoughttree  Před 8 měsíci +4

      Yeah, I think both those comments put it perfectly. Offering a gift is absolutely fine and you don't want to make the client feel "wrong" or bad, but how we respond can be "bad". We're all human which means no interaction is exactly the same, there isn't really a tickbox response. One on end of the extreme , they feel rejected by you. On the other, they feel an unhelpful pressure to provide gifts in the future or fall into some kind of people pleasing dynamic. As a result, you have to try your best to muddle through with something in the middle of both those extremes as you feel fits for the specific client and the situation. Ideally, you'd also get a chance to explore the meaning.
      For example, I'd never reject a gift on the final session of working with somebody...well, maybe depending on the gift, but I've never had to so far because it's important if they want to express gratitude, that feeling matters. Similarly, they might be giving you something to make sure you remember them, symbolic that you will keep them in mind, just as you'll keep the gift. I once saw a child who brought in a painting he had done of us. He said "where's the first place you look every morning when you wake up?" I said probably at the wall infront of my bed. "ok, hang the picture there."
      So I did. Work had to end sooner with that kid than was ideal, but it mattered that he knew I wouldn't forget him.

      @@mylittlethoughttree That's super sweet, and you're right on about end of treatment gifts! I did hear a horror story about a therapist who was given a Rolex at the end of treatment by a very very wealthy client who was from a culture where refusing a gift was a huge taboo. I'm glad I have never been in a position like that 😱

    Ted Lasso as a whole series was a wonderful balm for me as I watched it. But, even more so, your videos on Ted Lasso have been so soothingly insightful and genuine in their approach to character analysis and therapy breakdowns (as are all your other videos, of course). I would love to see you continue posting about the series until you feel like you've completed your thoughts on it, I would happily continue watching

    I found the aspects on professionalism and working for an organisation the most interesting part of this analysis. Mostly because it’s not something I’d ever considered before. All the counsellors I know have only worked for charities or seen individual’s independently.
    Anyway, fantastic video and great analysis.

    I am from the U.S. and Santa Monica is a city in California, close to Los Angeles...It is a place know for beaches and would be what we call here, a 2-piece bikini town... everyone is on some sort of diet there...That's why that joke lands perfectly in context of the show and that response specifically...Also I just want to say that I love your ted lasso videos and watch every one of them profoundly...They are cherished by me and I am sure others as well...Not only do I love the breakdowns from a psychological level, but it also allows me as the viewer to relive a show gone way to soon IMO....Thank you for the great work so far and I am looking forward to all of your Ted Lasso breakdowns in the future.

    As someone that likes to make sweets for coworkers, I can confirm it stings just a little bit harder when they dismiss it without even looking after you made it yourself 🤣 "Look me in the face before you reject my Snickerdoodles, Rachel!!" Hahaha! But in all seriousness yes I think it does play a certain degree into low self esteem and the rejection of the biscuits felt like further rejection of himself. Little, small rejections can definitely feel like larger blows when we have low self esteem.

    someone has pointed out that Jamie's "I'd rather not" and "Don't speak to me like that" towards his father in s2ep8 Man City is clearly the result of Dr Sharon helping him and suggesting to him how to verbally set boundaries. however, with someone like his father, these clear requests do not work as the would with most healthier people.

    Sharon always just struck me as autistic. I know a lot of autistic people who have had a real struggle with understanding why niceties are necessary and even being opposed to them on this like weirdly moral grounds? I think there's a lot of trauma involved in being expected to follow rules they don't see as having any real purpose. A lot of the time (in my personal experience, obviously) that coldness is gone once the conversation turns to deeper more meaningful topics. Suddenly the flat mask is lifted and they show empathy for "more important" topics. Honestly, it makes perfect sense to me for a therapist to manage to be quiet successful that way. Obviously I'm no expert, I'm just married to an autistic person, but that's just how I watched it the first time through. It didn't even occur to me other people wouldn't come to that conclusion as well.

    • @devilonyourshoulder8845
      @devilonyourshoulder8845 Před 8 měsíci +1

      I hadn’t considered that possibility, but I think this is more a clash of opinions and partially ego. Mostly Ted’s vs hers. She was trying to be a professional therapist, where AFC Richmond is already an environment that heavily embraces sharing just about everything. This would, in my mind, make her come off as cold or possibly neurodivergent until she can find a way to adapt her “style” (for lack of a better word) and fit in more with the rest of the characters more.
      Plus, Ted’s opinions on therapy are a factor. We don’t get a whole lot of backstory on Dr Sharon at first, and when she immediately throws Ted off emotionally, we as an audience are shifted away just immediately accepting her into the Richmond community

    I don't feel she's written well as a character or is it the acting? It can be so hard to tell sometimes if it's just bad dialogue or if it's down to the actor. I wouldn't use the the word confrontational to describe her. The word that comes to mind for me is abrassive. Ted is a people pleaser which yeah I can see how her style would help to break him of that habit. But she doesn't actually help him with that.

    • @mylittlethoughttree
      @mylittlethoughttree  Před 8 měsíci

      I think it's the writing. She's played/framed to be seen from Ted's perspective, exaggerated to fit how he feels about her, plus probably for comedic affect. Abrasive probably is a better word. I like her character and she does have great moments but it's not always the most consistent
