Burtons are just bops, whatever narratively they are super fun and make you want to dance along. My adhd brain also loves the chaos of that film so it’s my favourite, but the genuineness of the original is also great! that verruca song is such a female rage icon, both playing with being sweet but feeling angry!

I have to say that the opening theme from the Burton movie is one of my favourite pieces of music from any of these films haha. It's so strangely eerie, but I love the vibe. I guess it's partly the nostalgia talking...
But my favourite song is definitely Veruca's song from the 2005 film. It's my favourite scene as well. The actress that plays Veruca is soo good, and I love that at the end, you can see that the father has actually learned the lesson.
The Augustus Gloop song is also SUCH a bop!
And I really liked Cheer Up, Charlie! It felt like a sort of lullaby... A very sweet song. I remember when I first saw the movie, this is the song that stood out to me (this and I Want It Now). 😅

That subtle sadness you mention Gene Wilder expressing throughout his performance is exactly why Chalamet didn't really sell me on his Wonka, his character came out of the end of that movie having gained such a reliable and loving, close friend network that I just couldn't believe he's supposed to someday age into Wilder's character.

This is my main issue with the movie. Maybe something else happens in-between to make him isolated, cynical, and mean to children. But none of this points towards that being in his nature.

    • @Keanine
      @Keanine Před 5 měsíci +6

Wonka tells us how he started, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory tells us how his story ends. There's a lot that can happen in that time. I thought it was smart to make him optimistic and bright eyed in Wonka, showing his younger, more naive demeanour to contrast his more edgy, cynical persona in the 70s film. His friends leave him and his employees betray him, possibly one and the same, and he closes off his factory and himself from the world within the space of these two movies

    • @mylittlethoughttree

@@mylittlethoughttree , The reason why Wonka is much more bright and happy is because this is 25 years ago and he just started his dream. While a second movie would be good to flesh out how Wonka became who he is in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory, and how he became deranged over time. Timothee gives an excellent display of how Wonka would have been 25 years ago. Showing how he started with a big dream and a bright spirit, but over time getting more and more insane.

My top 2 are Pure Imagination and the opening theme to Tim Burton’s version. Yes it’s eerie, it’s strange, and it’s cold but that’s what makes it so wonderful to me. The film immediately tells you that it’s not shying away from the dark tones of the story. Also, it’s just an absolute banger.

  • @wolfpackjew
    @wolfpackjew Před 5 měsíci +8

I actually think Scrub Scrub is the most brilliant song in the new movie.
The tango beat shows that they have to do this song and dance and cannot escape it (especially driven home in the refrain when Wonka gets out and the rest of them can't stop saying scrub scrub - they are still trapped while Wonka refuses tonaccept that fate).
And if you think about the tango (step/rest/step/rest/step/step/step/rest) every "scrub scrub" is on the final rest of one phrase and the first step of the next. So the dance is perpetually moving forward, there is no rest from it, they have to keep moving.
And then - the villains show up in the song and the rhythm stops. They are not trapped, they can speak at their own pace and not on the beat. Then as soon as they turn it back to the workers, we're right back into another scrub scrub on their command.
I hated this movie. I loved this song.

@Ulfgood maybe hate was too strong if a word. Unnecessary is what I should have said. I don't mind the concept of a Wonka prequel, this was just poor execution for lots of reasons.
Scrub Scrub being the exception. Really anything having to do with Scrubbit and Bleacher. I'd watch an entire movie of just them.

It was very common that many old films took the musical technique from stage musicals where they have an overture at the beginning which has all the musical elements first all the films songs, where there are common sequences and keys throughout the songs. Its very similar in paintings by rembrant there are usually three dots of colour in the painting which are used as hues to blend the colours of the painting this is found by careful study but unnoticeable at a distance but gives it a homogenous feeling

I disagree that Grandpa Joe’s song doesn’t progress the movie. I think it does. It reminds us that even when things are looking down there is hope and the possibility of a change into something good. Grandpa Joe and Charlie both were losing hope in the possibility of something good happening. But ah a golden ticket…a chance for something more…a glimmer of hope. We watch Charlie lose his hope when that last ticket was supposedly found. Then watch him gain hope again…gain some happiness in his world. Then to share that hope with someone who has given up.
Then throughout the movie we watch others lose out on the grand prize by being selfish. But Charlie and grandpa Joe share their experiences. Look at each kid that lost out…each selfish. Each lose out. But Charlie holds his hope and shares it.
At the end of the movie grandpa Joe wasn’t going to let go of that hope for something better without a fight or at least the last word. Then after Charlie shows that though he lost his own happiness, he wouldn’t destroy another person’s happiness.
So the song is a reminder that there may be ups and downs but our character’s aren’t going to give up now. Not after being reminded that there is always a chance of something better.

    • @mylittlethoughttree
      @mylittlethoughttree  Před 5 měsíci

Oh no doubt about that. It's meaningful and it matters to the film, story and theme wise. I meant within the song, there's not much progression. Like the candyman, the first line already tells you all of the song, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but enough to put it down to 4th

I'm very glad you thoroughly explained your reasoning, otherwise for some I'd wonder what you were on about.
I thought I'd quickly be able to jot down my own rankings, but wow it took me a while so here you go: (I really did try to keep my reasonings short)
    25: There’s no knowing (Wilder) -
Good reasoning by you, but as a song? Nah, not good I'm afraid.
    24: Wonka’s Welcome Song (Depp) -
This song makes me question if this film is better than Wilders.
    23: Oompa Loompa (Wonka) -
Yeah, more just exposition than a proper song, so it’s down low.
    22: 500 Monks, One Giraffe -
The monks sing ‘It’s a giraffe’ so I’ll put in it. I find it rather amusing.
21: Up in the Air -
You included it so I will. Yeah, the Loompas sound good, but this isn’t that amazing.
20: End Credit Suite (Depp) -
Putting this in over Main Titles, but both are good. This lower as it’s only a medley.
    19: Pure Imagination (Wonka) -
Oof, still not the biggest fan, but at least they adapted it a bit to fit better.
    18: Oompa Loompa (Wilder) -
Alright, but yeah very samey. I like the slight difference in Mike’s though.
17: Sorry Noodle - (ps I spotted you missed this one)
Okay, bit too much like ‘Still’ from Over the Hedge though, so doesn’t feel original.
    16: For A Moment -
Doesn’t shine that much for me. Sounds a bit too autotuned, or is it the accents, idk?
    15: Scrub Scrub -
Just a bit of a bop, and Jim Carter’s bass raises it surprisingly high for me.
    14: Cheer Up Charlie -
I quite like this one, it’s thoughtful and sweet. Not wow, but sincere.
    13: Violet Beauregarde -
Great tune, but lyrics are a bit hard to hear imo.
    12: You’ve never had chocolate like this 1 -
Really like the hoverfly description, it’s just more of the style I wanted in Wonka.
    11: Veruca Salt -
Iconic and groovy. Don’t quite know how this missed out on the top 10.
    10: I’ve Got a Golden Ticket -
On a relisten, it’s just lovely. The choreography is fun and the lyrics sweet.
    9: A World of Your Own -
Very Pure Imagination-esque, with some strong lyrics but a little musically simple imo.
    8: You’ve never had chocolate like this 2 -
I personally love the éclair line. Practically everyone gets a great line in it too.
    7: Mike Teavee -
I love the fluctuating style here, and I could listen to this on repeat for ages.
    6: A Hatful of Dreams -
Little expositiony, but I love the tune & lyrics. ‘Gallery gourmet’ line tingles the brain too.
    5: Candy Man -
I take the innocent view too. Just a charming hit capturing the imagination excellently.
    4: I Want It Now -
One of the best performances. Love the tone shift between nice & horrid too.
    3: Augustus Gloop -
Holy heck just the intro to this sent it high let alone the choreography & lyrics.
    2: Sweet Tooth -
Biased for Mat Baynton? Yes. But this was exactly what I wanted for a camp villain song.
    1: Pure Imagination -
Yeah, nostalgia likely put it here, but it’s so good. Absolutely love Wilder’s performance.
Thank you for taking the time to read this comment. Just because I'm in the mood, I'll also list my top 5 from: Charlie & the Chocolate Factory the musical. FYI these are the original London songs, rather than the rewritten Broadway version. (there are a fair few duds in it, but a few gems too)
5: The Amazing Fantastical History of Mr. Willy Wonka - Fun recap of Wonka's past, bit of a Charleston style in the middle.
4: When Veruca Says - Fun tune, quick and to the point. Highlights Mr Salt's failings so well.
3: Juicy! - Really hits on the theme of fame, with hilarious lines like: 'she doesn't have a talent as far as we can see'
2: Double Bubble Duchess - Really groovy and introduces Violet & her father well. Little wordy but still really fun.
1: Veruca's Nutcracker Sweet - Excellent ballet Tchaikovsky theme, with such a dramatic and sinister edge to it. Perfect.

A bit weird to see arrangements of songs written for the 1971 film credited as the modern songs. Guess it's just a general annoyance with not properly crediting things, or people coming away from a film thinking the people behind it are more talented than they are. I know ideas and plot and many creative elements are recycled all the time, but somehow not knowing the history of songs/songcraft bothers me. Of course the focus here appears to be how the song serves the movie, and focuses more on lyrics than the music overall, and of course some people at least will know what song is from when.

First off, loved the long-form video. Very peaceful and good for making my system calm before bed. I really enjoy your stiff. It's thoughtful and interesting and you have a nice, expressive voice.
I love the Gene Wilder Wonka movie. I haven't seen the new one and the Depp one sets my teeth on edge. I liked him in a lot of other movies, but his Wonka just gives me don't leave anything fragile in his charge vibes. Slightly sadistic. Whereas Wilders Wonka will simply give you enough rope to hang yourself with and choose whether to cut you down after. Very natural consequences.
I love all the original songs. I love cheer up Charlie and candy man and all the rest. I love the original cheezy repetitive loompa songs. Cause wilder is just... he's sad and carries an ethos of extreme accountability. He wanted those kids to succeed but would not succeed for them.
Wilder Wonka songs are sweet and sad and hopeful that the consequences of going sour. They're... they're candy. They're candy in the sense that good chocolate will satisfy a craving and its calories will sustain you for awhile, but it's neither solid nor sustainable. Like paper. I wouldn't want to be trapped in a candy world. I'd be sick in a day. Wonka has lived in candyland... essentially alone... for decades.
The original works so well because it blends sincerity with madness with disillusionment. You know from the cane summersalt and contract that while Wonka isn't evil, neither is he good. He's the adult and he's true neutral, at least in his actions.
Musically, I'm unfair. I just love the original.

One thing I always found interesting, so in Wonka, Slugworth is the main antagonist, and in the 2005 (just like the book), the four kids are equally the main antagonist.
However, in the 1971 film, Slugworth could have been the main antagonist, but then it's revealed he's really Mr. Wilkinson. The four kids could have been equally the main antagonist, but THREE of the kids aren't THAT nasty, just misguided . . . It should be VERY CLEAR which of the four kids is the main antagonist . . . X3

I've seen all three Wonka movies and I think they're all solid all of the music in them is good, but I do feel like you did disrespect the new Wonka movie. It's a movie full of beautiful and bright colors as well as it shows Wonka's imagination to the fullest extent. MY list would go like this.
    1. Pure Imagination (2023)
    2. Hatful of Dreams (2023)
    3. Pure Imagination (1971)
    4. I Want It Now (1971)
    5. Sorry Noodle (2023)
    6. Scrub Scrub (2023)
    7. Oompa Loompa Songs (2005)
    8. Oompa Loompa - Hugh Grant (2023)
    9. Oompa Loompa (1971)
    10. Bad Feeling (2023) [Honorary]
    11. The res of the songs just didn't stick.

I wouldn't say I did it disrespect, all of the songs are great and 2 of them made my top 5! However there's just other songs I like even more than some of them, but ALL of Wonka definitely has the best visuals, conflict, and progression within the music

      @The_Grim_Raptor Před 5 měsíci +1

It's not that underrated if you watch any TikToks about Timothée in Wonka. Also it's most likely because it's not as nostalgic or since it's just a remake of the original.

Regarding the accents being American, ive found it strange that many of the recent films and series we see seem to mush together different countries for example Sex Education and The end of the F***ing world. Which have american british and canadian mixes of locations accents and settings
