higher and wider spreads with grids
Come join Pablo, Ian and I as we go about building our confidence jumping higher and wider oxers using the 'ultimate' grid.
By practicing gymnastic jumping I can work on Pablo's balance, rhythm, strength, and confidence, and more importantly my balance and position, and faith in myself to support him too over higher and wider oxers.
The 'ultimate' grid (ground pole, to a bounce, one stride to a vertical followed by two strides to an oxer) helps us work on our skills and technique without both of us having to worry about getting the distance right! Not only that, the grid is not forgiving and shows up all things that need improvement too. Not to say the least my straightness!
By using the 'ultimate' grid Pablo learns to approach, take off, and land more correctly and consistently. And it teaches him to maintain a steady rhythm and pace to help him approach higher and wider oxers confidently.
We started with a low and skinny spread, then increased the width first to allow Pablo to adapt to the wider spread. We finished off by keeping the width and raising the height of the back rail of the spread to see how comfortable we both were with a bit of width and height in the controlled environment of the grid.
Overall the session was a success, with some room for improvement in keeping the canter through the turn and staying straight through the grid!.
Practice and patience helps us progress!

stretching the stretch zone

Today, Pablo and I teamed up with Ben Netterfield, our Equestrian Performance and Mindset Coach, to push my stretch zone by jumping wider oxers. Our main goal was to work on me! By testing the bounds of my comfort zone and the feeling of being 'safe' whilst keeping Pablo in front of my leg galloping over wider oxers. With Pablo, the aim was to achieve a quality canter with consistent pace throu...

Tackling the Canter at Waverley Park Equine Today, Pablo, Ian, and I headed to Waverley Park Equine for a clinic focused on developing a jumping canter and building trust in ourselves and each other. Despite the chaos and the freezing ...

Come join Pablo, Ian and I as we go about building our jumping skills, balance, rhythm and strength with a couple of different gymnastic jumping exercises. As the saying goes the camera never lies. Ian set the camera up to focus on the middle of the top rail! And guess what it shows - not much of us! But there is lots of room for improvement in our straightness.

Great riding and beautiful horses! 🐴 I am not at all trying to be mean when I say this. but I felt the bit you had on Pablo was a bit much, and I felt like you were pulling quite a bit with him and Pumba. And with Pumba's, "unusual" behavior could be from pain, soreness, anxiety etc. I have ridden horses for many years, and I hope you can use your bits softer in the future. ❤
