I bought a NH36 movement from TMI with the intention of taking it apart and practice some oiling but from the factory it was already well regulated (+0.5s a day) and oiled (everything seems smooth eye ball amplitude with slow mode camera on my phone it looks good); didn't have the heart to take it apart, ended up put it in a case with dial and hands and called it a day, the search for a learning movement continues

    • @watchrepairtutorials

      Not at slower speeds no. It's definitely helpful to have larger parts separated in compartmental trays which can be added to the main basket. Most professional grade machines use rotating baskets that even spin much faster when shaking off the cleaners.

    Hi Alex I’m retiring soon and figured starting watch repair as a hobby So I’m getting my first tools. On loupes, I wear glasses and was wondering if the glass clip on type are required. Loupes just magnify the work as far as I understand, so I’m thinking they’re like reading glasses only with more magnification? Cause I would need at least 2 to start with 10x & 3x @ $80 each Anyway thanks in advance

    • @watchrepairtutorials

      $80 is going to be for the premium style, but there are many other options for clips. Just try googling "watchmaker loupe clip" on Google and you'll see other options. I pretty much use microscope 99% of the time so I very rarely even use mine anymore .

    Great video, many thanks. Question: I am going to remove a broken balance wheel/hairspring/bridge from a 7S36c mechanism. I know the mainspring is wound. Is there a way to de-energize it prior to disassembley? regards Bob

    • @watchrepairtutorials
      @watchrepairtutorials Před 5 dny

      You need to remove the winding wheel that's beside the crown wheel. The winding wheel is the one that's between the two fingers of the magic lever. Once that is out Put a screwdriver on the screw for the crown wheel and pull the click spring back to unwind the main screen in the barrel. Just as a sidenote, I find that the screwdriver slips through my fingers and a more controlled speed by putting finger cots on my thumb and four finger to hold the screwdriver while the mainspring is unwinding.

    I managed to clean and lubricate a couple of pocket watches successfully. I decided to try and work on my uncles Seiko 5 6119A that was left to my dad in 1979 when my uncle died, my dad passed it on to me when he died. Don’t you know, I took the balance assembly out and dropped it !!!! I let out a scream only God could hear. I had to buy a donor watch from India. The watch probably just needed a good cleaning and oiling. Anyway I’m going smaller with watches now, I hope I can get this working after 45 years. Thanks for your instructions.

    Alex: the watch I am working on has jewels for the balance wheel, but they are held with screws. How do you lubricate the top of the balance wheel? You have a video with a picture that shows exactly what mine looks like. This watch is from 1955, and I believe it is pre-Incabloc (or similar). Any ideas will be appreciated.

    • @watchrepairtutorials
      @watchrepairtutorials Před 5 dny

      Cleaning the end stone on the balance side, usually requires removing the hairspray in order to get access to the screws to release the endstone. Then you clean and lubricate as normal.

    Hello, I recently purchased a timegrapher, Weisher 1900, and put my Seiko SPB121 with the 6R35A movement on it and it's running a bit slow however my main concern is the variation between the different positions: Date: Position Rate (S/D) Amplitude Beat Error (Ms) 6/30/2024 Dail up -15 193 0.2 Dial down -3 209 0.5 Crown at 12H -62 163 0.1 Crown at 9H -12 183 0.7 Crown at 6H -12 174 0.7 Crown at 3H -44 181 0.1 There's almost a 60 second difference between some positions. Wondering what your diagnoses is for that or if that's what you get with a mid grade movement, is there a problem with the balance wheel or does the movement simply need to be taken apart, cleaned, lubricated and put back together? I fully wound the watch and let it sit for a couple of hours before I pulled these results. I bought the watch new about 4 years ago and it's never been serviced. I'm not expecting to have 0 positional variance however expecting numbers better than this. Thank you!

    • @watchrepairtutorials
      @watchrepairtutorials Před 9 dny

      Well first of all thank you for providing the information I need. Most people just send me one position. You didn't exactly right. The amplitude is very poor in all positions. Your vertical amplitude is such that any poising error on the balance wheel is heightened. 160-180 is the worst possible amplitude for vertical positions. The regulator pins appear to be properly set so I don't think that's an issue. Your delta rate is 59. Delta rates are THE indicator for trouble in the movement. Movements coming out of the factory lubricated which is very inconsistent as far as its accuracy. I think this is all pointing to the movement needed to be fully serviced.

    What are your thoughts on the eve pin polisher that ive heard reed by several others?

    • @watchrepairtutorials
      @watchrepairtutorials Před 13 dny

      They have their place, but they can't replicate what a burnisher does.

    • @brianwohlleben3182

      @@watchrepairtutorials that's kinda what I thought. They are probably ok but not as good?

      @@brianwohlleben3182 burnishing works by stretching out the metal which fills in low spots which leaves a polished surface. Doing it with an eve would be removing material, which is not ideal for side shake which can cause problems with how the balance runs.

      @brianwohlleben3182 Před 12 dny

      @watchrepairtutorials ahh! So eve would be better for light rust or cleaning of an otherwise healthy pivot. But a worn piviot needs to be burnished.

      @watchrepairtutorials Před 12 dny

      @@brianwohlleben3182 well you have to be careful that you don't bend the pivot. I've used them for light polishing inside barrel arbor holes. "Rust be gone" is good for rust removal folllowed by polishing.

    The problem for many repairers is that they have no idea about the mechanical theory, how the watch actually works. You ask them why the lever escapement needs oil and they won't know.

    • @watchrepairtutorials
      @watchrepairtutorials Před 13 dny

      I totally agree with what you're saying. Probably the biggest gap in knowledge is that of the escapement and its functioning. When you're working on vintage watches, other problems can be somewhat obvious, but when it comes to problems within the escapement, that's where people get hung up .

      That's very wise. Learn and practice, Learn then practice. There is not enough practicing going on. Everyone learning watch repair should have several movements that they use for practicing on. You definitely don't want to practice on grandpa's Rolex. If you know what I mean..
