Budget understand. So you would sandblast and repaint yourself ? Or just strip it leave it raw yourself? Painting aluminum is difficult to begin with as you see it’s just flaking off. . Time also is ones biggest asset. Rather have an old nickel then a shiny turd.

It is interesting that these plates cracked. Some alloys are prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking. You need one that is not. Unfortunately, most alloys that are resistant are expensive nickel alloys.

Best thing for mental health is EAT MORE RED MEAT, and No carbs or sugar. No supplements provide the 3 things that feed our brains other than red meat. Our bodies have existed on meat for 1.5 million years, it's only the last 70 that other things have been available, and whats happened to everyone's mental and physical health? No heart disease, altzimers, autosism, depression and cancers before 1920, guess what happed to what people have been programmed to eat since then. Coincidence I think not. You already said it. The weakest link. I'd replace every fitting on those two Mast. 40 years old is 40 years old. Yes cost is an issue, but at sea, in heavy weather, the cost and will be worth it. I'm guessing this video was filmed months ago. I'll be glad when your cruising videos come back on. Lovely family you have, Sir.

I think blast and paint is the best option and will give the best long term outcome as to the Duralac or Tef-gel consideration both products are excellent I use both based on location. In locations that will rarely be accessed I use Duralac even though it is a pox to use and ends up in places you had no idea you touched so tang plates etc. on things that are likely to be accessed somewhat more frequently like shieve mounts and light bracket s etc I use Tef-gel because it is a little more user friendly and a lot less toxic a little goes a long way. Also for your stainless nuts and bolts a very little neverseez pure nickel anti-sieze will protect the threads and prevent galling it won't make them come loose but Galling is a good start point for crevasse corrosion. justy my 2 bob worth . cheers Moose

Paint it. But replace the tangs too lee. Stainless every 10 years. You cant do the plates and rigging and just leave the tangs.

I recommend you sand blast the whole mast and other spars. That way you will easily be able to see all issues (some of which could currently not show through the paint), and have a better idea of everything that needs to be done. As for coating everything, I recommend you talk with mast manufacturers about what they recommend and use their input in your decision. All the best!

  • @jonathanwetherell3609

If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing properly. Bolts - it is important that the load is not on the threads. As to corrosion, the first thread takes about 30% of the load in an infinite screw. So if that first thread is corroded (it looked like it) I would change the bolt.

Those chain plates look like they were raw stainless and none of them had been polished. It’s essential they are polished to avoid small cracking.

We redid the rigging in 2018 on our 1985 S2 11C, including a complete mast refit. If we were to do it over, we would leave the mast aluminum and not paint it. The mast still looks beautiful, we used Awlgrip metallic bright aluminum, so it looks like an aluminum mast. We also bead-blasted and painted the pedestal the same color. We removed, inspected, and polished our chain plates and only had to replace 1 that had a crevice corrosion crack. We run into a lot of sailboat owners who don't understand that chain plates should be re-bedded at least every 5 years; we do it every 3. We remove the deck plates, dig out all the sealant and reseal. Otherwise, it doesn't get done until they start obviously leaking and the earlier slight leaks can do a lot of damage before it is noticed. A rigging refit is one of the most satisfying jobs you can do on a sailboat, good work!
