We redid the rigging in 2018 on our 1985 S2 11C, including a complete mast refit. If we were to do it over, we would leave the mast aluminum and not paint it. The mast still looks beautiful, we used Awlgrip metallic bright aluminum, so it looks like an aluminum mast. We also bead-blasted and painted the pedestal the same color. We removed, inspected, and polished our chain plates and only had to replace 1 that had a crevice corrosion crack. We run into a lot of sailboat owners who don't understand that chain plates should be re-bedded at least every 5 years; we do it every 3. We remove the deck plates, dig out all the sealant and reseal. Otherwise, it doesn't get done until they start obviously leaking and the earlier slight leaks can do a lot of damage before it is noticed. A rigging refit is one of the most satisfying jobs you can do on a sailboat, good work!
Good to see Morotai on Quality Control duties 👍🏼
You already said it. The weakest link. I'd replace every fitting on those two Mast. 40 years old is 40 years old. Yes cost is an issue, but at sea, in heavy weather, the cost and will be worth it. I'm guessing this video was filmed months ago. I'll be glad when your cruising videos come back on. Lovely family you have, Sir.
Good templates for the new chain plates
The intensity of labor can only compare to the intensity of confidence you will feel at sea knowing your system is solid. Pretty work!! 👍⛵⛵⛵
As much as we all want to see you back in the water , you’re doing the right thing 😃🍻
I think you guys have dodged a few bullets. Thanks for sharing.
Those chain plates look like they were raw stainless and none of them had been polished. It’s essential they are polished to avoid small cracking.
Good call :) if ya going to do it do it all right new plates with new rigging means more sleep at night on those long crossings :)
Wow! Thank God you checked the chain plates. Now you will have a piece of mind with new rigging all the way down to your plates. And also addressing the mast. Great work you guys. 👏⚓️⛵️🍻😎
I recommend you sand blast the whole mast and other spars. That way you will easily be able to see all issues (some of which could currently not show through the paint), and have a better idea of everything that needs to be done. As for coating everything, I recommend you talk with mast manufacturers about what they recommend and use their input in your decision. All the best!
I'd suggest you bead blast the entire mast giving you visibility of all components and their connections to ensure their condition. And apply a protective coating as well as adding to their life span.
Lee was a wealth of help for me while in the boatyard and having challenges. Kind of nice to see him asking the rigger questions. He is a very knowledgeable and helpful man. Enjoying the videos. Dwain on Amarok.
Great job Catalpa Family and soooooo glad you did this plate strip out! Have a great week and looking forward to seeing progress updates.
❤nice video
I am looking forward to seeing you sail again. All this time on land must be draining you
It is interesting that these plates cracked. Some alloys are prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking. You need one that is not. Unfortunately, most alloys that are resistant are expensive nickel alloys.
Another really interesting video. Morotai is precious.
I think blast and paint is the best option and will give the best long term outcome as to the Duralac or Tef-gel consideration both products are excellent I use both based on location. In locations that will rarely be accessed I use Duralac even though it is a pox to use and ends up in places you had no idea you touched so tang plates etc. on things that are likely to be accessed somewhat more frequently like shieve mounts and light bracket s etc I use Tef-gel because it is a little more user friendly and a lot less toxic a little goes a long way. Also for your stainless nuts and bolts a very little neverseez pure nickel anti-sieze will protect the threads and prevent galling it won't make them come loose but Galling is a good start point for crevasse corrosion. justy my 2 bob worth .
cheers Moose
Just re-watched your episode of selling your old boat. You guys are the best. Always inspiring. Always make me feel better about life. Can't understand why you don't have many more subscribers. Hope you don't need to do many repairs in the future. Just sailing. Thanks.
Bead or Walnut shell blasting and leave it raw and unpolished. No more secrets under some paint and you save yourself the work of painting!
@18:53 i would need to see a sample area but i think leave the aluminium raw. i thought you weren't supposed to paint aluminium anyway. great work.
sand washer and paint all the mast.
Those look like massive chain plates ! That said, they always corrode where you can't see them !
UN GRAN SALUDO FAMILIA CATALPA DESDE LATITUD 34 S. ARGENTINA !!!! BUENOS VIENTOS !!!!
Patch prime and paint
If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing properly. Bolts - it is important that the load is not on the threads. As to corrosion, the first thread takes about 30% of the load in an infinite screw. So if that first thread is corroded (it looked like it) I would change the bolt.
Consider using the old cut down chainplates as backer for the new ones
Stainless steel @ twenty year life span. Send them to the Seattle area and have Titanium chain plates made. No more corrosion worries. Lighter, stronger and will not corrode.
It's time for a beer😊
🍻
Is this a older video? I thought you were in the water and sailing , what did they say about whenever you own a BOAT???? Bust out another thousand, so glad you are safe and careful, repairs now before ocean Crossing, safe winds , Northern California says Hello and Good thoughts and prayers for everyone impacted by the Park Fire, thank you Fireman 🚒🚑🚓🚒
YAY, I remembered your rigger's name, well, I did write on a scrap of paper.
What a great video it’s very important to inspect properly.. sand blasting would be great but stripping it by yourself and inspecting inch by inch would leave you feel better.. What a wonderful video thanks for the education
Cheers mate
Paint leopard spots on the mast.
Polished aluminum looks great until the reflection blinds you while sailing.
so look down at the water and get blinded anyway 😀
This job keeps getting bigger as I watch the video. But I know it will get done right. The Captain is in charge.
Sand blast the mast and paint it.
Hi
Hey mate 👋
Blast, prime, paint... is my vote. If you have the tools and resources.
16:07 looks like a big patch without anti-fouling in the upper right corner. Is that typical? Or an indication of where a hull repair is needed.
Paint it. But replace the tangs too lee. Stainless every 10 years. You cant do the plates and rigging and just leave the tangs.
When do you splash ?
Definitely bead blast and clear coat paint hides to much
Budget understand. So you would sandblast and repaint yourself ? Or just strip it leave it raw yourself? Painting aluminum is difficult to begin with as you see it’s just flaking off. . Time also is ones biggest asset. Rather have an old nickel then a shiny turd.
🙋🥳
Do you not sale the hat
Whats you’re kitten’s name? It didn’t seem to come through on the transcript.
Morotai 🐱
why such long commercials ?? almost 3 mins
