    Why don't you use a resolution chart like the USAF 1951 you. Also a brightness test with the scope looking a a white sheet and using a light meter, the accuracy of the E/W adjustments and reticle notwithstanding These are the most important aspects of scope quality

      Currently using the Bushnell Match Pro (original version, not the new ED version), but I am in the process of testing some other "budget" scopes that will still meet the base class requirements. Stay tuned for reviews of those.

    If I choose to hold over, what is an average parallax setting, or is that still dialed each time?

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision Před 2 dny

      All scopes are different, but in general I'll parallax for the middle target and keep my magnification low to increase depth of field. Something in the 12x-16x range should allow for good depth of field while still being able to use the reticle hashmarks to make holds.

    Different approach than most other suggestions as my focus would be on specific scope classes. Like is there something thats comparable to the og MATCH PRO for base class but includes .2 mil hash marks instead of the normal .5 and such like that.

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision Před 3 dny

      Well, you're in luck because the first two scopes I will be reviewing are the OG Match Pro and a scope that I might replace it with that has 0.2 MIL hash marks. Stay tuned!

  • @Rico11b

    You need a geared head on your tripod. That way you can dial windage and elevation to get the scope perfect and level. It also needs to be stable enough that you can turn the turrets and the scope or base does NOT move at all. That awesome camera should REALLY help to give a great image.

    • @CopperStarPrecision

      Absolutely. I will be using a geared head, the ballhead was just for demonstration.

  • @KoryReeves
    @KoryReeves Před 3 dny

    One thing that is important to me, that I don’t think I’ve ever seen a reviewer mention, is the ability to distinguish between the target and a noisy background whenever the parallax is not dialed perfectly. In other words, if I’m dialed for a 40 yard target and transition to a 95 yard target, could I still take the shot without having to adjust parallax. Not sure exactly how to measure that, but it is a big issue for competitive shooting and I’ve never seen any reviewer address it.

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision Před 3 dny

      Definitely something I want to test. Depth of Field is going to be very magnification dependent, but I'm sure the different optical configurations used by different scopes will lend to better or worse performance.

  • @scottcottontx
    @scottcottontx Před 3 dny

    Main thing I would be interested in seeing is the reticle at 12x vs 18x. Some reticles look great on the manufacturers website but are too fine at 12x to make out the sub tensions. Other's are too chunky at higher magnification for shooting a 1/4" KYL at 75 yards. Glass quality and box tests are a given, but I don't see many people showing what the reticle looks like at the magnifications we use for competitions.

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision Před 3 dny

      Great points. Most tests will be focused on the more real-world competition magnification ranges.

    • @CopperStarPrecision

  • @ChrisKinsman
    @ChrisKinsman Před 3 dny

    Parallax at 25 and under. Fov at min magnification. Fov at max and maybe a few in between. Mirage at min/max. Depth of field at min and max and midway between. Dof thinking about how sensitive parallax is between a 75 and 150 target for example. I.e how parallax free could you stay on a troop line with a 100yd spread

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision Před 3 dny

      Great ideas! Mirage will be a challenge as it is more weather dependent, but depth of field/parallax is something that is definitely missing from most reviews.

    I like the thought you have put into this, the "target" down range is an optical target. Maybe the color "mirage" around the reticle and at the edge of the scope, Maybe how well it tracks at 100 yds? Not just elevation but also windage.

    Hi, I recently subscribed to your channel and love your work. Thank you for asking - I would love to see scope reviews that actually show that you can see the bu!!et hole on a paper target. (Not with a go pro or a sporting scope ) I purchased some scopes before prior to doing YT research and took advice from the shop. As an example a 3-9x40 is good enough for 100y with a 22lr. However, on a white piece of paper I actually can not see the small hole in the paper. I then had to get spotting scope just to see where I was in relation to the bullseye. Eventually I would like to upgrade all of mine. I actually just did 1 of them and went with a zerotech 4.5-18x40 and I can finally see the holes on the paper target. Not great but good enough on a 100. So in short every scope review shows that you can plink a metal target with this sort of scope and that sort of rifle but no one ever then shows if you (can’t hear the impact (on metal) can you see the hole to see where on the target you ended up. I understand past 200 yards this may be an issue unless you have $2000 scope maybe but I guess reviews like you are about to do would confirm this in your findings. Peace and well done again for an awesome channel. From the land down under 👍

    When I’m in a low kneeling position like you at 9:30, I get a lot of heartbeat bounce. How do you overcome that?

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision Před 4 dny

      Hard to say. The first thing I might try is to change the position of where the buttstock meets your shoulder pocket. With the buttstock higher you're going to have less contact with your chest which might help with the heartbeat bounce. You may have to change or adjust your cheek weld and/or length of pull so that you can still see through the scope.

    If you measure this and find that the difference does make a difference in accuracy do you then batch the ammo accordingly? Then if so would you make the changes with bolt shims verses barrel shims for a quicker fix? I have heard this for years and I have even when loading for high power competition we would weigh each bullet, case, etc. to all match our desired needs. We did see a difference in our 600 yard shots…not so much on 300 in.

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision Před 4 dny

      Weight sorting is difficult with rimfire since you don't know if the source of the discrepancy is due to the case, projectile, powder, or priming compound so I don't bother. For competition I try to stick to the match grade ammo (Lapua Center-X, Midas+, SK Rifle Match, Eley Match, Eley Tenex) which has shown to have very consistent rim thickness across a box/brick/case. I do not yet sort by rim thickness, but might start doing so for my benchrest rifle, not my PRS/NRL22 rifles. Where I do see some potential (I am still testing and will release videos when I have conclusive findings) is to match the headspace to the rim thickness of the particular brand of ammo that you intend to use for competitions. Bolt shims decrease headspace and Barrel shims increase headspace. With my headspace of 43-43.5 thousandths it is well suited to the Lapua/SK brands. I see some marginal benefit to adding shims to get the headspace closer to 39-40 thousandths when using Eley ammo (still testing this out).

    @douglaskohls3163 Před 5 dny

    Would ammo velocity change holds?

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision Před 5 dny

      Short answer, no. Long answer, since all the shots are at 50 yards then no matter what velocity your ammo is at they should all be arriving at the target at around the same time. If you have a good 50 yard zero and decently consistent ammo the target will work as intended. For example, the 0.5 MIL hold, if you dial 0.5 MIL up from your zero and shoot the target, you would expect your impact to be 0.9 inches high from your aim point (50 yards = 1800 inches / 1000 = 1.8 inches x 0.5 MRAD = 0.9 inches). The center of the first (lowest) bullseye is set at 0.9 inches above the aim point. So keeping your 50 yard zero and holding over the 0.5 MIL should have the same effect and your impact should be somewhere in that first bullseye. What different velocity will impact is your ballistic solutions/DOPE for targets at different distances. So for a 100 yard target your hold or dial might be 1.8 MILS where mine might be 1.7 if we are using ammo with different velocities.
