Cleaning a Vintage Quilt TOP #cleaningtips

Cleaning a vintage quilt top, start to finish! The products I use in the water are sodium perborate, AKA Restoration or Retro Clean (link below), and a splash of household ammonia. This is a small amount of ammonia and you will never smell it. Rinses right out, but takes out odor, mold and mildew! Laurastar at the Longarm Machine #laurastar

This is my review of the Laurastar ironing system at the longarm. I used the Smart U in this video, which worked great. If I were only using this machine at my longarm, I would most likely use the LIFT. The iron was terrific steaming out wrinkles. It did a nice flat press on the seams as well! EASY Make YOUR OWN Decorative ZIPPER!

Make your own decorative zippers, using things you probably already have! Old zippers work well for this project! Add ribbon, lace, trims, anything flat that can be stitched along side the zipper track. I like to use glue to hold it down first, but use whatever you're comfortable with like pins or clips. I use tiny bottles that I've filled with Elmer's washable school glue. Find the bottle link...

Glue Baste Quilt Seams for Accuracy
zhlédnutí 1,4KPřed 4 měsíci
Use simple, washable, Elmer's school glue to keep seams from moving while you sew them. You can use either the white or clear glue, no matter! The beauty of Elmer's is that it will hold your fabric in place so you can sew, or wash out if you eventually wash the finished quilt. I use Elmer's glue in art quilts and everyday quilts. It is also non-toxic and acid free, so no reasons not to use it! ...

Quilting a Society Silk Doily on a longarm

The process of quilting a Society Silk doily on the longarm. The embroidery work was most likely done about 100 years ago. Scrappy FEEDSACK Quilt
zhlédnutí 647Před 4 měsíci
This is a quilt I'm adding to as I have scraps. I'm using the leftover feedsack scraps from the pincushion BACKS that I create. They are already quilted, but when it's as large as I want (hoping king size!), then I'll put a backing on the longarm, a thin batting, then ditch stitch every 2-3" on the top. It will be a heavy quilt! I square it as I go and create long strips out of all the 'blocks'...

How to Clean Your Vintage Quilt

Kelly, thank you❣️ I have some very old fabric items that have badly yellowed. Knowing the chemical involved will help me to find the Australian equivalent.
@@MsBethharris great!
Thank you for sharing this video, it is amazing how beautiful this process is such a labor of love for the art of quilting!
@@suzannewurster505 thank you!
Yay! This could be another rabbit hole!
@@reniearrigo absolutely!!
Im 75, been sewing since i was 5, and you just gave me a gob of information i did not know. Truthfully, i must have had my head under a rock, not to know some of those things, but i find the older i get, the more i learn and the less i realize i " know". So thank you! I collect old quilt topa and ill never get them all hand quilted in my lifetime and im not rich enough to have someone else quilt them, so ill take your wise counsel and focus on gettind my favorites off the shelf and back to work! 😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@ransomdaniels8395 I’m always learning new things. Glad you had some light bulb moments, love those!
Hi Kelly if you have a top loader do you empty the water out every time so it is no sitting in water. Loving your video's.
@@ilsebartlett1618 nope, I would let it soak, that’s the magic! Actually harder to do with front loader as it doesn’t have enough soak water, but I make it work by pausing the load.
Thank you for the extremely helpful tip, Kelly. 🌷I am always happy to learn something new. 🦋
This is just stunning! What a wonderful thing it is to restore, repurpose and reveal the history of women before us. Thank you so much for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! I’ve not had the courage to wash my grandmother’s 95+ year old quilt. Now we will be able to enjoy it!
Wonderful! Good luck!!
I love the instruction! Can you do another video of the wonky/fullness and then talk through what you did?
Check my page for other videos. There is a lengthy one that does just that!
Wow that point is beautiful! I’ll try this method out for sure. Thanks for sharing Kelly!
Gorgeous display of quilts! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you beautiful
Wow!! What a talented group of quilters! Such vision and creativity to take these vintage pieces and recreate them into these beautiful, amazing, magnificent pieces! Thank you for sharing the details of each piece, Kelly!
Thank you so much!
Fabulous Kelly, thank you
Thanks Diane!
Great exhibit!! So enjoyed watching!
Thanks!
The link for restoration is a 2 pound tub. Where did you get the 10 pound tub? I searched Amazon for it but only see 2 pound tubs. Thanks.
It’s no longer there!! 🥲🥲🥲
Absolutely beautiful what a wonderful display you and your friends should be proud... I have a question like on the wedding ring quilt you said things were added to it did they apply those on?
Many techniques! Applique, hand stitching, probably some fusing. That is by Allison Aller. Look for her on Facebook. She also has a Craftsy class.
Thank you Kellie for showing us these quilts.
You are so welcome!
Congrats Kelly on so many of your BEAUTIFUL pieces in the museum ! ! ! I was fortunate enough to take a class from you in Salt Lake City a few years ago and just drooled over your pillow covers and quilted hankie pieces you brought. You are so VERY talented at preserving the old vintage pieces. Love watching you work your magic on pieces on your CZcams channel. Thanks for sharing your talent with all of us ! !
Thank you so much!!!
Old quilts are so fascinating. All the lovely and different fabrics that are used. It's like looking at a time capsule and it always makes me think about the people who made these quilt tops and wonder why they were not finished. I am looking forward to seeing how you quilt this. It's beautiful!
They are a piece of history!
Oh gosh! So easy and pretty! I have lots of old zippers to use this idea for! Thank you so much, Kelly! (You are so brave to do all this on your wool mat. I would probably get the glue on the mat!😁)
It can be washed out if you get some on it! ;)
@@KellyClineQuilting good to know!!!
Such a great find ! ! I so agree, NEVER trust any red, especially antique fabric. Ask me how I know ! !
Red is scary in so many fibers!! ;)
I use glue, it’s like second nature to me know. Especially on small piecing.
Yes so pretty
Get the lift!♥️
Sounds like a plan!!
Thinking of adding a Lift…love my lauraStar 1980
I’m thinking about it too!!
What about if the wind comes up? All the work laying those out and then whoosh!
I use clothespins and clip to the grass if there will be a breeze. I do watch the weather and make sure it's not a windy day. I live in KS, so that's a given! ;)
Where can I find the accent fabric?
Hi Karla, this was created years ago by a customer. I'm sorry, I have no idea!
They are beautiful 😍
Fabulous!
Great tip!
Wow! I love this ironing system. I work with vintage linens, and you are so right about the difficulty of ironing out all of those small wrinkles around embroidery. This is amazing. Thank you for sharing with all of us. Oh, and I just found you today on FB; I went to Utube and immediately subscribed to your site. I can't wait to see your vids. Many, many thanks in advance for making your videos, from one vintage nut to another, Lindsay, "Hot4art" - Vintage linens restorations/creations and Quilt Designs, Sacramento, California. I worked with a dear friend, Janet, and owner of (7 Sisters Fine Vintage Linens - business is on hold for a while as she moved to the other end of the State. We both are re-evaluating business opportunities)...but we both are crazy/fun Vintage Linen Seekers! ❤
Hey! Good to know another crazy vintage gal!!
Buying so,instance and a steamer pronto! I’ve been longarm quilting for a couple,of years and from time to time e get aui;ts with a little fullness. Nothing too bad yet, but it’s just a matter of time. I have been misting with water but I think these extra steps will be so helpful.
Thanks so much Kelly! When you rinse and then reseal do you make up a new solution with the Retro Clean or rinse and re rinse in hot water? Thank you!!!
If the first soak has done the job, then I just rinse in cold water. If there are still light stains, I’ll do a new mix of Retro Clean soak (don’t need the ammonia) and then repeat.
great tips..perhaps you should mount the camera on the longarm, so it is visible, what you are doing
The problem when filming alone, the whole quilt needs to be seen at times and then I need close ups at other times. Getting the best angle is always hard. I’m definitely not a techie!
I love mine...
Love my Laurastar! I call her the dragon lady!
hahaha!! She's a great machine!!
That is a great name!
YOU are so sweet and funny...love your videos....
Thanks Sharon! 😉
I love my LauraStar!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you just listened. This is great
You are so funny!!!!
Ok to use the white color of glue?
Yes, I use both!
These are soooo amazing!
Absolutely!
I love, love, love my Laurastar systems - I have two - one with suction/blow and an older one without. It is so amazing and worth every penny! I’m primarily a garment sewer and am an iron junkie. I have gravity feed and have two boilers but the Laurastar is the best!
Awesome! I think my next one will be the portable tank so I can take it to my longarm!
Thank you.❤
Thank you for your help ! I have been ask to bind a very old quilt for my friend, it has high scalloped covers and deep valie’s
It’s not that hard, just cut your binding on the bias!
Thank you for this helpful tip.
