    I remember the first time I heard this song as a boy. From the introcate intro and that first lyric, I knew this song was going to be epic. "I have so much to say, and yet I cannot speak..." I'm 62 now, and Kansas is still one of my all-time favorites.

    Ah..1969, i was 15 years old still at school and constantly broke, we couldnt afford full price LPs they were £2.00 EACH..So, my mate Andy came in one day with Nice Enough to Eat, the latest Island Label Sampler and at 14/6p much more affordable. I bought it off him i still have it, it is a genuinely fabulous LP Track 1 Side 1 is 21st Century Schizoid Man, remember weve oh...sort of..vaguely heard Synths and Mellotrons, in the Moodie Blues fashion but this LP probably put the ROCK in Prog for the first time?

    Cool to include this, great reaction. But please, please, please (everyone), stop calling this the first the 1st “true” or “real” Prog album, it’s not even close. It’s great to talk about its importance in the development of Prog, and the point from which Prog really took off, and its monumental impact, but it is far from the 1st prog album (there are literally dozens before this). Love KC and the album, but c’mon, it didn’t start Prog.

    In before the block, but good on ya for adding this to the series. By the way, I'm not sure this song was meant to be about someone struggling with schizophrenia, but it's rather more about how powerful people were doing crazy things that were messing up the world (warfare, mainly). Also, the Beatles were an influence on this music but even here the avant-jazz and modern classical influences that would show up on subsequent albums are on display. This is where some of the 'difficulty' to get into earlier KC comes from. But it's impossible to overstate the importance of this song and album to the progressive rock genre. Musicians from bands like Yes and Genesis have long credited this album as the one that kicked them in the butt to raise their game, even if artsy fartsy rock music had already been around for a while. The Moody Blues -- at the peak of their popularity -- recognized something great was happening here and tried to sign King Crimson and produce this album, but KC had the self-awareness (or vanity? Pride?) to want control over the production themselves. And it's probably a good thing they did, since for 1969 it's a stunning sonic document that still holds up today. The only downer is the entire process of recording this album -- plus the ensuing touring -- completely broke this lineup. Fripp tried several times to recreate the magic before realizing he needed to reinvent the wheel, which led to the 'Lark's Tongues in Aspic' band and albums, but that's another story... By the way, you're not going to leave poor Jana hanging with just this one song, are you Nathan? You will go on to "I Talk to the Wind" and "Epitaph" as well, right? Do it before the Fripp block-hammer comes crashing down! 😉

    A jarring opener for that great album, you need to hear the rest of this great album, please review the other 4 songs at you leisure, they will be a pleasure for you and your viewers. This stuff is pioneering for the genre but the next 2 songs are very not hard listening, you will have bliss in the next one and the last song on that song, Epitaph, is a song every reactor should hear, amazing stuff. Enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶🔥

    I think the distorted vocal reminds me of John Lennon's vocal style. I think the song owes a lot to Jazz(freeform?) The volume seemed to dip on the vocal. I would recommend listening to the album "Islands" it has some classical themes in some tracks.

    have to add that the artwork for this album was done by Barry Godber. he was a friend of KC lyricist Pete Sinfield and this was the only artwork he ever did. Barry was actually a computer programmer who sadly passed away only months after doing this from a heart attack. he was just 24 years old The band loved his paintings

    happy Sunday thanks for showcasing this one. Crazy well constructed tune with great playing. Greg Lake on bass and Michael Giles on drums. Janna needs to hear some of their softer stuff as well. glad she didn't hate this. its a bit much for a first time listen I would say.

    One thing you miss out on with 21st Century Schizoid Man, is not listening to the album, so that you can hear the drastic change, from the end of Schizoid, into the beautiful 'I Talk to the Wind'. It's sublime. Love that Jana heard the Beatles in this.

  • @Lightmane

    Hi Nathan. Since you're struggling with King Crimson a little bit, let me make some suggestions for you. Try these pieces. I think you'll enjoy all of them: Epitaph Starless Red One More Red Nightmare Fallen Angel Elephant Talk Frame by Frame Dinosaur People Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream and finally, Lizard (It's 23:25 in length, and I'm sure you'll greatly enjoy listening to it. Fripp hated it, but now he "appreciates" it, and they performed it live around 2017. Their performance in Chicago is on yt, though you won't see them perform) That's more than enough to keep you busy for quite a while 😏😏

  • @Lightmane
    @Lightmane Před dnem

    First time I heard this piece, it blew my mind. I had never heard anything like it before, and now King Crimson is my second favorite Prog Rock group, with YES being #1. I love all of their crazy music, and I greatly enjoyed watching the Double Trio on CZcams. That was just wild. Then they go even crazier with 3 drummers. That was just insane.

  • @quentinmichel7581

    Fun fact... prior to the recording of this album, Carl spent a significant amount of time learning technique from the world's top master of the tympani. Carl was a true percussionist and not just a drummer.. Also the unusual synth type sounds during his solo in the middle of Toccata was all Carl. He experimented with attaching synth modules to some of his kit and rigged it to trigger when he whacked the skin... Mixing the electronic sounds with the drum's normal sound. On the topic of the drum kit, Carl wanted s new all-stainless steel set so went to British Steel to see what they had available. They had 0.25 inch and 0.50 inch. Thinking thicker is stronger he went for the half inch and ended up with an wonderfully engraved absolutely beautiful kit ...that weighed a freaking ton. The bass drum two burley stagehands to carry it to the stage. It actually collapsed a stage or two, after which they had to reinforce some. It didn't help either that the kit plus kettledrums, tubular bells, and two huge gongs were all set on a rotating pedestal. Never half measures with them. 🤣. I guess the kit got a bit unwieldy to tour with so after a while Carl sold the kit. It had a couple of homes..the eventually ended up in the possession of Tingo Starr who still it I believe.😊

    Live versions are even better, especially lineups with two guitarists, allowing Robert Fripp to get creative on his solos Let's hope Robert Fripp's minions allow this to stay up King Crimson is an acquired taste(it took me 20 years to fully get them). The KC album " Red " is pretty accessible for those new to KC

    Thanks a bunch for this list, very fun and informative video. I really enjoyed listening to The Lemon Twigs, even though they're far from being what you could call a real prog band, but, yeah, very enjoyable nonetheless. I do have one slight regret about the list you came up with, I was hoping to hear about a couple new heavy prog bands (not prog metal, but rather stuff like Riverside, PT, and the likes) but couldn't find anything in that particular genre (I already own and love Caligula's horse latest album which....unfortunately, leans a little more towards the metal side than their back catalogue) So, if you have any suggestions, I'm more than interested !! Thx once again. 👍

    • @NathanOnShuffle
      @NathanOnShuffle Před 6 dny

      Glad you enjoyed the video! Just outside of my top 20, I do have a few heavier albums, but many would certainly be considered prog metal (Almo's debut record 'Reconciliation' which has a bit of harsh vocals and a prog metal sound not unlike a band like Haken; Turbulence's 'Binary Dream' has a bit of a Haken/DT vibe and Wheel's 'Charismatic Leaders' has a lot in common with Tool...). An album I liked that might be skirting the line between heavy Prog and Prog metal was 'Messenger's Quest' by Triton Project, containing many great epic length proggy tracks. I also really liked Quantum's 'Down The Mountainside'...maybe a bit raw and less polished since it is a debut but I think it might qualify the most with the 'heavy prog' style that you might be looking for... those are the ones that came to mind in that vein. Some honorable mentions would be Monkey3's 'Welcome To The Machine' which is an instrumental heavy psychedelic/stoner rock album and the debut album from the band Sykofant, which maybe has a bit more of an older, classic rock style sound... Hope that gives you something to check out!

    My ordering is 8) Aquarius [nice initial offering but many tracks rather unmemorable for me], 7) The Mountain [a bit snoozy at times for me with 3 tracks sounding too similar to one another], 6) Restoration [mainly because it's too short -- an EP], 5) Vector [Vector ranks higher for me because of the long track Veil -- simply amazing!], 4) Fauna [nice re-invention with Pete in place of Diego, but I do miss Diego's virtuouso a lot!] , 3) Visions [great from start to end], 2) Virus [their hardest hitting and rhythmically complex album], 1) Affinity [simply brilliant except for red giant]. But truthfully, any of my top 4 could be inter-changed on a given day.

    Nathan, have you checked out a band from LA Lo moon? If not I think you need to... Not to progy, but more than that is more like 80's early 90's Talk talk or echo and the bunnymen perhaps

    Great list! So much great music from this year so far, I can't wait for the rest of 2024!
