  • Welcome to ‘Prog Song Sunday’, where we listen to a Progressive Rock song together and then discuss our thoughts about that particular piece of music. In each episode, you get two different perspectives- the seasoned Prog fan who has 20 years of experience listening to the genre (Nathan), and the fresh new listener who is only now discovering the world of Progressive Rock (Jana).
In this episode, we are featuring the first side of Gentle Giant's 'The Power and the Glory'! Please listen along with us, and continue on to our discussion to see how Jana feels about her first dedicated listen to this prog rock gem and Nathan’s background and history with this particular piece of music!

Show her live playing of Funny Ways. That is what’s brought me to love GG.

I became a fan fairly recently (4 years or so) after being on the prog wagon for many years. I love them to bits.

Playing The Game reminds me a lot of Todd Rundgrens Utopia, which is an awesome album.

GG was on another level --- far above the rest.

The GREAT GIANT! This was my first GG album in 74, then I bought everything prior! For me, the Concept more or less symbolized POLITICIANS & POLITICS rather than a Kingdom and all the facets through rhetoric to charm and manipulate the masses! ALWAYS good to listen to during an Election year!

Jana's face during "So Sincere" 😂. But bless her for actually trying to follow the narrative woven through the songs! But as Nathan said, GG is definitely harder to get into than Yes or Genesis, but IMO they're worth the effort. It helps if your tastes in classical music includes the early Baroque and Renaissance periods. But they're the one band -- other than maybe King Crimson -- that modern prog bands most often name check as an influence, even if they don't necessarily emulate anything about them stylistically. It's no surprise GG weren't commercially as successful as Yes or Genesis, but they stuck to their guns for pretty much their entire run, and represent an inspiring and uncompromising commitment to their art. Plus once you've heard the songs enough times the light usually goes on and you get sucked into their wacky (and often beautiful) brand of prog. This particular album is from what most consider their peak, although I prefer the next one 'In A Glass House' slightly more.

My dad is a massive fan and would play their music all the time in the house, so I think I was preconditioned to like them and therefore it never felt like much effort to get into for me- but I recognize not everybody feels that way 😂

I saw Gentle Giant 4 times in the 70s brilliant band live. Sadly the business didn't push them at all.

Nothing like GG's beautiful chaos...my favorite album from them...Jana will get them one day, they are an acquired taste(it took me 20 years). They are wacky(the good kind)
    RIP Ray Shulman

Great choice, not sure Jane's gonna love it. But I'm glad you get into. GG is my favorite band, equal with Yes and Van der Graff…

Hi Nathan & Jana. Dave here. Really liked your reaction, Jana. While I like the wackiness in GG's music, I also like nice & normal! The group work together brilliantly, but I think Kerry Minnear is the star here, with his his range of keyboards and styles, and vocals on three of the tracks. Aspirations is a real favourite.

I was really hoping we could chat, Nathan, now that you told me you love fantasy and are also thinking about doing some stuff with King Crimson. This is the only way I know of to message you. Not trying to bother you, I assure you. In a community post, I just posted a sketch of one of the Characters from my second book. She's an Aquatic Elf. I think you'll like the sketch. Hope you check it out.

I love this album but GG are definitely a challenging listen. A true relic of the experimental 70's, for better or worse. Fits in to the better for me though
