As with most GG music, beautiful chaos... but not really chaotic if you're paying attention
The music and lyrics are a variation on themes from the first track.
i guess it is pretty off topic but do anybody know of a good place to watch new series online?
@Brayan Colin I use flixportal. Just search on google for it :)
@Elijah Jerome thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I really appreciate it!
@Brayan Colin You are welcome :)
It just dawned on me, Gentle Giant are releasing Steven Wilson Remix of the entire Free Hand album at the end of June, so of course you should go there next!!! Already pre ordered a copy for myself :)
Thanks for this, needed that today. I figured since you where a bit down on The Face, you`d put off this song for a month or two :) 4 things I wish to say to this:
1. I`m absolutely in awe of Dereks voice in this, the power and the glory, uh I mean control is nothing short of insane!
2.Those "Hails" from the "public" in this song are the type of hails I too would shout if I had a gun pointed at me...... (If you didn`t catch it on the first listen, listen again and take notice of how the hails trails off...)
3. I think Proclamation and Valedictory works as perfect bookends to this album. Everything that was positive and hopeful about Proclamation has turned to desperation and dictatorship in Valedictory, and I absolutely love that. This is a perfect album to play from start to finish (and then all over again)...
4. I vote for your next GG album to be Free Hand or maybe In A Glass House, those two alongside The Power and the Glory are considered by many the pinnacle of their musical career. Free Hand I`ve already heard, probably their most accessible album I`d guess and SO funky! In a Glass House I`ve heard two songs, The runaway and Experience and I`m really excited for the rest. I`m trying to save 3 Friends and Acquiring the Taste for a later time, as to savior this great musical experience.
Have a great day! :)
The album is not over! There's still one more song: the title track. It was originally left out, but included in reissues. Check it out.
I wouldn't consider that part of the album proper, the song was only made because the label wanted a single.
@@kidflersh7807 He still could do it. It was part of the project. It bears the title. Talks of the subject. It was left out because the tone clashed with the rest of the album. It definitely clashes. It's very bright and upbeat. It's a great track nonetheless. But I agree it's not "proper".
I made a fabolous track om a mixtape: The Power and the Glory suite: Part 1: Proclamation. Part 2: The Power and the Glory. Part 3: Valedictory. Works very well!
In A Glass House is a great next GG album to review. Kudos for doing the entire (or most of the?) album!
The way that the tempo breaths just doesn't happen anymore.
It is one of their best, in my view. Only In a Glass House, Three Friends and Octopus would compare. An achievement!
I agree. I've always viewed IAGH as their ultimate tour-de-force. The departure of Phil after Octopus dealt a huge blow and nearly ended the band. He was kind of the band leader and a tremendous creative force. They decided to give it a go nonetheless, and they definitely pulled it off. I can't decide which one's the best so I say Octopus is the best with Phil, IAGH is the best without Phil.
Free hand compares even better!
Definitely some great tracks on Free Hand. JP has to listen to On reflection some time soon!
Acquiring the Taste is another great GG album!!!
Acquiring the Taste and Free Hand are both flawless in my opinion. :)
I say hat's off for doing this album! It's one of their best and a favourite of mine.
Are you going to do the title track as well? It wasn't technically on the album originally and only released as a single), but it's been included as a bonus track on CD reissues.
Wonderful introduction!
I really need to get into this band.. I have heard a few songs, but this album seems like the perfect one to buy for Prog fan new listeners of Gentle Giant?
It is a good one to start with. It might help to watch some live videos on CZcams, it's easier to get into when watching them play.
Free Hand is their most accessible album. :)
@@markspooner1224 Gentle Giant live is amazing! They all play several instruments.
@@markmaxwell1013 Yes they're phenomenal. There's a great interview with Derek Shulman on the SOAL Night Live CZcams channel since yesterday.
Try their Three Friends album, it's much more easier to listen.
here you really do a perfectly thorough analysis. It's so entertaining and interesting to listen to. I am so grateful that I got to see them live in Stockholm in 1976, maybe they were at their peak as well. I want to hear you more in "In a glass house"
When you get back to Gentle Giant may I suggest their album "In A Glass House". It was only available on import back in the day. It is the album just before "The Power and The Glory", coming right after they put out "Octopus". Do the title track or perhaps just jump right in with the first song, "The Runaway". Trust me. You know you can't go wrong anyway. It's Gentle Giant.
My favorite Gentle Giant album but maybe not as "accessible" as Freehand. I would still vote for In A Glass House.
Yes, there are reprises of motifs (both lyrical and musical used in previous tunes on the album....They were masters of statement and re-capitulation.
I think for the next GG album you should tackle Three Friends. You will love the concept I think.
At the end there's a tape sound because it's rewinding and the story repeats itself
What stays the same is the corruption of power, and the power of the corruption.
"Acquiring The Taste" is another one of their greats, I'd suggest this one for review next. "Three Friends" and "In A Glass House", though not my initial preference, are also great albums to check out imo
Acquiring the Taste is a wonderful album. When it comes to In a Glass House, only the 2009 Shulman remaster is worth listening to; the improvement over the original is incredible.
@@pentagrammaton6793 Is that remix available anywhere on the Internet or streaming? Had never heard of it before. I agree with you though, the mix of IaGH is surprisingly rough compared to their later albums, or even their previous one
czcams.com/video/tcX2DqdDxI0/video.html&ab_channel=GentleGiant-TopicGentleGiant-Topic
@@meurglysthefourth @spec7re there, I made a playlist from already existing YT videos of the 2009 mix. I hope it works. :)
@@pentagrammaton6793 Thanks a lot!
As I sat,in my room so dreary,Mornings labor had me weary.I turned on CZcams and was not sorry,J.P. posted 'Valedictory'! Peace.
Highly organized chaos, the heavier side of GG.
Thank you for that, carry on
I knew most of these mainly from their live recordings. It's been good to hear the studio versions in their intended sequence: a kind of socio-political/psychological concept album. I would go to the Free Hand album next to continue the journey.
Interesting fact : the « fast forward» sound clip at the end of the song is actually the whole track being rewinded very fast .
Love this album. You’re spot on about reprisals, similar but different.
Transatlantic does the same kind of thing with most of their albums (in Whirlwind, the opening theme is repeated several times, including the very end). Request the first two sections of The Whirlwind. It will make you want to listen to the whole thing. Trust me.
It's a companion piece to Proclamation.
The way I understand these songs is (I might be wrong).
In Proclamation someone seizes power because change is good.
In Valedictory the guy insists on keeping power because change is bad.
June 25 Steven Wilson’s remix of Free Hand is being released so why not start that album as soon as you can get it to coincide with the event?
Looking forward to it. Hopefully the definitive version. I already have 4 different remasters of Free Hand including the original vinyl. I can't keep on buying them. :)
I love, love, love "Proclamation", and I guess it was so nice they did it twice! This is a fun twist on the theme, but the creepy discordant funk of the opener appeals to me more than the snarling hard rock reprise. I would recommend saving the bonus track "The Power and the Glory" for a time when you're more desperate for new Gentle Giant songs, and instead move on to one of their other masterworks - in addition to the two you've reviewed, In A Glass House, Three Friends, Acquiring the Taste, Free Hand, Interview, and The Missing Piece are all top-tier albums in my opinion.
Hi Justin ,
I’ve just revisited some of your reviews of P and G songs . Looking forward to your album review 👍
In the meantime , may I suggest you do a 1st listen to Working All Day from Three Friends . Whilst it’s an amazing album , this track brings so much to the table with Phil Schulman still in the band . His sax contributions are remarkable in this smooth rocker but you will hear a beautifully crafted and executed organ solo by Kerry M . Arguably his best ever recorded . Please give it a try 👏
Another great late video! Keep up the good work!
My favourite GG album!
Yeah JP being " A Giant For A Day" !! : D
Another great one by the vastly underrated Prog Masters uniqueness !! Lol
Must be seen & heard Live to truly appreciate and "Get" them. : )
This album shows Gentle Giant at their most dissonant. The cascading run (reprise) from "Proclamation" always makes me think of "Flight of the Bumblebee".
I think the single "Power and the Glory" was recorded after the album was completed. I'm surprised the band don't like the track. It's funky and has a catchy hook.
Gentle Giant is wonderful on a Sunday
I can take a sip of my soda. That's what I can do. See you tomorrow.
This is my favourite GG album .....
Crazy call to Proclamation haha
This and Free Hand are GG's best two albums, though I love em all.
You've got a board? Awesome. Hope Vangelis, Jon and Vangelis, U.K., Mahavishnu Orchestra, Bruford, Brand X, and Jean-Luc Ponty are all on it 😀
No YES? What's up with that?🙃
@@jeffschielka7845 Because I already KNOW that YES is on his list... ya GOOF, LOL 😛
@@jeffschielka7845 I believe that Justin has reacted to more YES music than anyone else, but Chod is starting to catch up 🙂
@@Lightmane Are you a wizard? Lol!😆😆😆They both do a lot of that band I kinda like.🤔
@@jeffschielka7845 Am I a Wizard?
Why yes, yes I am 🧙♂️ 😀
NOW, time for In A Glass House : The Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tbh this song felt like more of an afterthought to me. I guess the point was to kinda give a second impression on the first track as one of the last tracks. I liked Proclamation much more, although I know Proclamation wasn’t your favorite track. Proclamation is actually the song that got me addicted to Gentle Giant lol. The middle part of Proclamation definitely is kinda jarring but the weird, jazzy keyboard is so much fan paired with the verses. I think it’s worth relistening to Proclamation lol. Also, Three Friends is definitely the next album to check out, then maybe In A Glass House after that
Justin, you are actually not done with this album. You haven't yet have the song "The Power And The Glory". It was the single off this album, but not included on it. It's a REALLY good song too.
Justin it's not quite over yet ! you should do the title track "The Power and the Glory" which was recorded at the same time as the album at the request of the record company which needed a single.
Give a listen to 'KITES', by the Shulman brothers earlier band SIMON DUPREE AND THE BIG SOUND, totally different but beautiful just the same.
Love the beard bro
Ty!
You can't go wrong with any of those first GG albums, up to and including In'terview. Three Friends and Acquiring the Taste are standouts to me.
The original theme music - signature tune - to your channel is a distant memory.
The live version on bbc in concert kicks quicker more rapidly than this one . But i recognised the cough “vocals”. The sound guy had a good night that gig. Diolch.
I can’t see my feelings Justin. But writing certainly helps!
Cool👍🤣doh I’ll post this after you’ve finished your discussion next time.
Plan A. There is no other Plan.
Valedictory is a pretty apparently a rearrangement / reprise of Proclamation. The main guitar riff is the organ riff in the first bridge of Proclamation. It helps, incidentally, to imagine the lyrics in the mind of Donald Trump *shudder*
Free Hand is I think their best album overall. Recently getting a remix from Steven Wilson too. Also if you watch their live performances of the title track and On Reflection after listening to the album versions, you'll be amazed at how much they change.
You should do the album “Free Hand” next. New Steven Wilson remaster Is due out on June 25th. Sometimes it is my favorite GG album.
Free Hand next please
I love your reviews, but it's been over 2 months since you reviewed any GG! I suggest you listen to In a glass house (in it's entirety) next. it's their best album! IMHO. Others will agree I'm sure :) No one else has touched it yet... you'd get a head start on everyone and a whole lotta traffic ;)
Are you there Justin, I'm still here. 09:45
And the next album: In a Glass House. Free Hand and Three Friends would also be good choices. TF is best played in 3 sets. Two first set the scene, the following two go well together and the last two tracks just can't be separated.
Sounds better on 1.25x speed.
;)

I have Quaterna Requiem, Madrugada is a brilliant track. If you like that you'll also like from Italy Celeste self titled 1976, lots of mellotron.
@@markspooner1224 It seems all too often Mark we're only talking to each other. And Mark Maxwell also.
@@markspooner1224 I went into my deep collection and found - no Celeste albums. Thanks Mark - I'll check them out today as I have the time and always put a preference on golden era prog! Thanks again.
@@vdggmouse9512 It's great to find new older stuff, I'll be checking out that Mexican band too. We already know all the usual suspects but there's so much more to discover. Feel free to recommend anything else!
@@markspooner1224 Cast from Mexico has 20 studio albums - hard to pick their best - they kind of blend into each other without having a true standout album - BUT - I do think they all are very listenable and they have no bad albums. The Hungarian band After Crying - are you already familiar with them? They are special. I suggest starting off with either album '6' or 'Show.' Hey Mark - how old are you - are you or rather were you a progger from the 70's or are you catching up? To be into all that old stuff is quite an achievement - or are you my age and in your 60's? For some reason - maybe I'm wrong but I thought you were a younger fellow. Well I hope you are!
I saw you had chosen GG today… which was inevitable. So, I was thinking of skipping this one but after going back to sleep for a couple and making breakfast with some eggs and everything that was leftover, which was a bit. So much so, since I already have an Elvis taco, I named this monstrosity the Gentle Giant taco. Just know that when you take a bite, it might be different from the one before.
It went with the song perfectly… some King Crimson angular rhythms, some Yesish surprise vocals, etc.
I was going to make a suggestion that the last song could also be a reaction and an album analysis but you squashed that idea… guess you, understandably need to review review the album.
Hope David Sancious’s Transformation (Speed of Love) can make that board stage left.
Peace and experimental breakfast Music
I know, I'm repeating myself, and still: in the realm of classic prog, this is so extremely unique! Not an easy listen, though 😉
It might be their best album but I’m partial to Free Hand personally…
Almost forgot, new animation video by GG of Just the Same:
czcams.com/video/zxdw2ILC9a8/video.html
It's like the calm, in control authoritarian from "Proclamation" has ripped off the mask to reveal the gollum underneath.
I do not care for gentle giant but this one is pretty cool even though I am an ignorant ignorant boy.
“re-prize-al” ✌🏽
Hope all is well.
I prefer the tracks where Giant lets it rip. Shocking I know, I know..... I like your stink face on this one.... I forgot......... Why Not!?
As ever with GG, interesting. This wasn't bad. odd repetitive themes, discordant, ok, but not their best work. This album's a decent listen, but i find it a little hit and miss. Varying as it does from this, not bad, to the sublime Aspirations. GG though, always worth a listen.
Imagine this music with quantising and autotuners. Kind of Led Zeppelin with a twist. Black Sabbath could have something akin to this riff as well.
Dude, if you liked Gentle Giant and Yes, you should giva a try to Yezda Urfa, they are like the missing child of both of those band. Besides, almost nobody knows about Yezda Urfa, so please, check them out, they have only one album... And oh my god its fucking good
I thougt they had 2 albums, Boris and Sacred Baboon, or am I missing something? Boris I didn`t care too much about when I heard it. Sacred Baboon I liked a bit more so I`ll give that another listen in a while, liked Boris And His Three Verses most off of S B (know there`s a version on Boris too, but that`s not as good). I`d argue Hands would fit into this category too, they actually impressed GG and even opend for them one time in the US.
Free Hands.................................................................. It sucks, No just kidding!!!
I like prog rock a lot, but have not been able to appreciate GG. It mostly sounds like an attempt to cram as many different sounds into each song as they can. And usually they do it without any flow to the music. I like well done transitions but not every 15 seconds. Not for me.
This band seperates the amateur from the true progger.
And I think liking this band pinpoints those suffering after effects from COVID. No taste.
@@eluv9660 lmao kid got triggered real quick
