what's crazy, especially considering this is probably their magnum opus, is that they released it completely for free, in the sense that anyone is allowed to make and sell their own CDs, vinyl, cassettes, etc. or remix it and sell it, or even use the entire thing for the soundtrack of a movie. the album has a very loose story. from MY interpretation: Polygondwanaland/the Castle in the Air/Deserted Dunes Welcome Weary Feet are describing this place called polygondwanaland, and a group of people who have traveled there. Inner cell/Loyalty/Horology tell the story of the unsuccessful coup against a god-king, and Tetrachromacy/Searching/the Fourth Colour tells the story of an individual (who i think was one of the travelers to polygondwanaland and involved in the coup) acquiring this power of tetrachromacy (which is a real thing, like how some animals like caribou can see UV light) and becoming a god, or more likely an empty vessel for some god to control because he cannot control the intense power himself. from a little vinyl-only bit at the end of the album it is implied that this person is or has become Han-Tyumi, a character from some of the band's other albums, namely Murder of the Universe. i think that Crumbling Castle is also about the direct aftermath of the ending of the story in murder of the universe. one more thing to note is that 'gondwana' or 'gondwanaland' is the name of a supercontinent that existed 200 million years ago, made up of south america, africa, india, and australia. you can see this on the album cover for laminated denim. again, that's just my simple interpretation and i think the album is a bit more about atmosphere than a coherent narrative. i have more thoughts on the story but i'll save them for if/when you guys do Murder of the Universe. glad you guys enjoyed this one!
I think I've finally decided that this is their best album out of all that I've heard. I hope they return to this style of album in the near future. I think there's more they could do in this realm, almost like they did with the microtonal stuff with KGLW. Not polyrhythm "experimentations" vol. 2 but a concept album or just longer progressive songs that use polyrhythms. I don't even need the polyrhythms necessarily! Anyway, their skills on their respective instruments have improved quite a bit since this album and I think they could do some awesome stuff with something in this vein again!
this was so awesome to watch, this is my personal favourite gizz album and ive heard all of them! as a prog head this itches my brain PERFECTLY. crumbling castle is probably my #1 song from any band, the first half of this album is just so magical and the last half is simply just perfection of music. i love the whole narrative and i love the way everything is structured. essentially its split into four parts of music, three of them being three songs each (which i think was intentional because of the three main colours that most animals can only see). Ive learned crumbling castle and polygondwanaland on bass and they are so much fun! the polyrhythms and all the different time signatures they use are just masterful when you know how they work. this album just means so much to me but i promise im done yapping lol! glad you guys had a great time with it !
Now you see why some of us are utterly obsessed with gizz. This album is everything. And you nailed it Clay, their influences are clear but they have turned them all into a sound that is only theirs. No matter what genre. I fucking love this band to 💚
Got a VPN just for you guys! Sucks YT is being a little bitch, especially for this album. Shows how warped the system is. I’m just glad to see you guys doing their full albums and are getting Gizzed on as much as possible before seeing them! None of Poly was played last time in NY so we’ll most def be getting some this time.

Excellent 😁...you mentioned the supercontinent 🙏🏻...thankyou...I like your thoughts, and Gizz is VERY thought provoking 🤔
I just read your full comment again...really good stuff...your interpretation reads like a story too 👍🏻
Laminated denim is at least my interpretation them time traveling to Gondwanaland and LD used Polyrhythms as well hence ‘Poly’Gondwanaland.
Yes is the biggest influence on this album for sure, Stu is a huge fan
all the best bands like Yes.
@@LilRedRastaespecially owner of a lonely heart.
@@barbarjinx3802 had no idea that song was Yes until a few years ago
inner cell > loyalty > horology is peak gizzard. saw that live at red rocks.
