  • Welcome to ‘Prog Song Sunday’, where we listen to a Progressive Rock song together and then discuss our thoughts about that particular piece of music. In each episode, you get two different perspectives- the seasoned Prog fan who has 20 years of experience listening to the genre (Nathan), and the fresh new listener who is only now discovering the world of Progressive Rock (Jana).
In this episode, we are featuring "Karn Evil 9" by ELP! Please listen along with us, and continue on to our discussion to see how Jana feels about her first dedicated listen to this prog rock gem and Nathan’s background and history with this particular piece of music!

This was definitely the pinnacle of the ELP catalog. First Impression Part 2 still gets a lot of airplay on classic rock radio.

All the Impressions were great, including Jana's. 🎶

That was fun! Great to see Jana enjoyed that, despite the rather daunting length (even by prog standards).
"1st Impression, Part 2" got a fair amount of radio play, so it makes sense that it's a bit more mainstream sounding than the rest. My personal favorite section is "2nd Impression." I think that's an often-underappreciated masterpiece, and one of the best things they ever created. Glad to see you guys really liked it too.

2nd Impression for flute, of course! In a nutshell, 1st Impression: the Concrete Jungle, roll up and move along! It reminds us of and leads into the 2nd Impression: the Real Jungle, rustlings and disturbances in the forest at night, Predator and pray, Tom and Jerry. 3rd Impression: Reap What You Sow within the Technosphere, the AI counter-rebellion. The Maps of War are Drawn!

34:37 The cool thing about this is that there were just albums back then, so when you turned over the album, the music starts out with "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends". Pretty cool.

As a prog rock head since teenager I prefer long songs like KE9,Tarkus, Supper's ready, Thick as a Brick, All of the Above or Gates of Delirium but I understand it to non prog person who never get into as my wife never like it. She like Kpop and something like that. We're take different path for personal music taste.

There is a reason the third impression ends so abruptly. While on an album, it is more of a performance piece. The third impression is about man vs. computer. Throughout the performance, Keith had been playing the Moog synthesizer, which was turned sideways to the audience. It's relatively narrow but wide and tall. As the repeating part begins, Keith leaves the stage with the sequencer set to repeat but continue to speed up. The Moog , representing the computer, turns towards the audience while spreading large silver bat like wings in triumphant victory over man. But at the maximum speed of the notes, there is an explosion as the Moog/computer blows its brains out. Hence, the sudden cut off of music. The piece was performed in quadraphonic sound, which was an early forerunner of Surround Sound. Massive speakers were placed in the four corners of the venue with the audience in the center. As the final note sequence played, the sound was panned from speaker to speaker making the sound circle the audience once per sequence. As the sequence was played faster the sound zipped around the audience faster until it sounded like it was coming from all directions. At the explosion all the lights were killed momentarily.

I get a kick out of how Jana has progressed in this. I remember when she started doing this. She was definitely not a fan of songs over about 4 minutes. Her patience has grown and she’s opened up her horizons for sure.

I am greatly looking forward to this. I never heard back from you Nathan, as to whether or not you're a fan of fantasy, like Harry Potter, or The Lord of the Rings, or other fantasy novels. Also, I was hoping you'd enjoy my ranking of King Crimson albums, and my Top Ten list for them. Hope we can chat later : )

Yes, I am a big fantasy fan, definitely love both Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings! I'd love to see your King Crimson rankings! It might help me since I'm trying to listen through their albums to do my own ranking in a couple months...

@@NathanOnShuffle I wrote a D&D Fantasy novel and narrated it on my channel. It's in a Playlist. Any chance you could listen to the introductory video and let me know what you think? There's two books, so make sure you click on Book One first 😏

@@NathanOnShuffle For some reason my reply to your reply keeps getting deleted, and I'm not sure why. Do you have certain words that can't be said, like "ch-an-nel" or "play--list"? I'll try again. I've written two D&D fantasy novels, and narrated them. They're both in a Play--list. Any chance you could listen to my introductory video for Book One, and let me know what you think? If not, I understand, time and all. Figured it can't hurt to ask though, right? : )

Hi Nathan & Jana. Dave here. Sorry to be a party-pooper, but I've never got on with KE9, ever since it was released. Mostly too overblown and unstructured - at times it seems like one Emerson solo after another. The song structure is why I much prefer The Endless Enigma, Trilogy, Pictures, Memoirs, Knife Edge and Pirates. Terrific musicianship of course and I really enjoyed your reaction.
