Heck YEAH bands we love!! I love most of these bands too, but MAN am I ever grateful for you getting me into Dirt Poor Robins!! What an amazing band I would never have found without you!
I'm so glad I was able to share them with you! It is always fun to introduce somebody to a band and then be able to have someone to geek out about them with 😉
Enjoyed this, Nathan! I much prefer positivity and appreciate you always trying to reflect that in your presentation. I was stuck in only following classic prog for decades and it's really only been the past 8 years or so that I've started more delving into modern prog. I think it was more ignorance than interest. But I've discovered so much great music these last handful of years. And the modern prog scene is hard to keep up with as new bands are always popping up. Not all is good but a lot is great. I can very much appreciate your list and honestly there are still bands I wasn't familiar with like Izz. You can bet I'll be checking them out. Keep the positivity coming!
I’m forever grateful to you for introducing me to Moon Safari! So far, they and Big Big Train are the only modern prog I can consider favorites, but I will be checking out 5 of the bands on your list that I have never heard of, so maybe I will add to my new favorites!
Great List and Neal Morse is my No.1 too. The only 2 Bands which are in my Top 15 you didn't mentioned are: THRESHOLD and VANDEN PLAS. They are my No.2 and 3. Both Bands are a bit under the Radar. Greetings from Germany and thanx for this great channel❤🇩🇪
I don't think anyone can match the energy of Scot 🤣 But I love his videos. I recently also discovered your channel and support your take on things, focussing on the positive. I do that with my channel as well...I love prog (again) and love to talk about it.
Frost* and Riverside are defo in my top 5 bands, I've been listening to a lot more Post Rock lately, bands like Russian Circles, Tides from Nebula, If these trees could talk etc, some good stuff out there atm Bro :)
I haven't heard much Post Rock, but I did absolutely love the new album from sleepmakeswaves, 'It's Here, But I Have No Names For It'! Seems like I should explore the genre further!
Nice list. A few bands I'm not familiar with, so will need to check them out. I think Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree is top of my list. Consistently great music and willing to step outside the norm to try new things. The latest Advent Horizon album blew me away but I think they need a longer track record before they would make my list.
I have Advent Horizon penciled onto my list as well (sitting at #24) but only that low because I have a bit of an unwritten rule in my head that they need to prove consistency over several albums to break into the top 20, but last year's "A Cell To Call Home" was absolutely fantastic and I can see them breaking into the top 15 in a few years!
Hi Nathan, I've been following your channel for a while now but don't comment much. I'd be hard-pressed to do my own list, especially since I listen to a lot of metal (mostly prog-related, but not always), but I'd definitely mention Frost*, Moon Safari, Galaad (the Swiss one, unfortunately back to suspended animation after an impressive comeback), Lazuli (great to see on stage), old-timers Pendragon and IQ, Steven Wilson as well (finally saw PT live last year), and Haken.
That was a really interesting video. It’s thought provoking. We cross over on many of these artists but I am surprised by a few things. First that you are not a Pineapple Thief fan. I have seen them several times and already have tickets for three shows in the US on their fall tour. I happened to have seen them back to back with the NMB and both shows were equally as good. I think you would really enjoy their shows. Second, Marillion completely out of the top 15? I am a huge fan and have seen them 15 times. Best shows ever. I was also on CTTE (I did say hello and introduce my self to you and the Mrs.) and the Marillion show on CTTE was not like their normal fan shows it was a less intense show than their longer fan centric shows that I have seen so many times. The last and least important is that I think you are not giving the newer TFK albums enough credit. It took me a while but I have grown to like them as much as the older ones but in a different way. Thank you for your thoughts and passion. Dedicated follower!
I am a fan of The Pineapple Thief, but I will admit I have been getting into them more recently and am not as familiar with their older albums, which is maybe why they aren't quite up in the top yet, but my list is always changing and they can move up! Marillion has always been an interesting case for me, because I used to really not 'get' them at all...I knew that I should like them based on all the other bands I like, but something wasn't clicking...it wasn't until recently that I finally started enjoying their albums and understanding why people love them so much...but I'm still in the early stages of developing my appreciation, so they aren't quite at the top for me yet. And I probably should give the newer TFK albums more credit, they are still excellent and I particularly really loved By Royal Decree. Their latest didn't really grab me at first, but I've been enjoying it more and more over time. Still certainly one of the best Prog bands out there...
@@NathanOnShuffle Thank you for your response. I know you have mentioned time and again that you are not a live album fan. I am sort of the opposite. I think bands really find the sound and energy of their songs after playing them night after night. [See; Genesis "Seconds Out" or almost everything Neal Morse has released live]. I would highly recommend watching the Marillion live DVD "A Sunday Night Above the Rain". I am addicted completist for music and have everything they have released and for me that is their best live DVD. I would bet that if you watch that live video that you will "get Marillion" and understand why they don't just have fans but have people that are absolutely crazy about them. I hope you get to see The Pineapple Thief live. They are great in concert. Their live DVD "Where We Stood" is really good. I have met all of them and they are so nice and friendly too which makes it even better. Thank you!
Number one for me is Big Big Train. Also excited by what's been happening with IQ (seems like they are due for a new one) and Moon Safari. Neal Morse Band of course! But the old guard is not dead: how about the new version of Styx! Now, can you recommend a Haken album to start with for a progger who is not a metalhead? Thanks.
IQ is a great call, I'm guessing we'll see a new album from them either late this year or early next year (before their appearance on next year's Cruise to the Edge at the very least). I love the latest two Styx albums (ditto with Kansas as well)! As for where to start with Haken...I definitely would steer clear of Vector and Virus as those are the most Metal focused...I actually think The Mountain is probably a good entry point...it still has its metal moments, but I like the balance here between Prog and Metal...
Nathan... Love your channel. I'm guessing you're thinking of the modern Prog which I respect, but I have to disagree that you don't have Marillion on that list! They've been my all time favorite since way back in '84... Now I will say I have seen Haken and was very impressed seeing them live, I can agree with where you have them on the list. Now time has changed for me... For me Marillion has always been my#1, but after seeing Big Big train live this yr for the first time.... Big big train is #1 loved David Longdon (may he RIP🙏) but Alberto is taking this band to a different planet! Mark my words their next album will be even better!! That's just my humble opinion! 😎✌️
If I expanded it a few more spots, Phideaux is definitely making the cut! Phideaux is a bit lower at the moment because it has been a while since there has been new music (Infernal came out 6 years ago), but a new album could definitely move him up my list!
Well Nathan, you're anti-clickbait video got me to click on it, but as soon as I realized you're talking about modern progressive music, I paused the video to leave this comment. I have basically zero interest in today's music. Even YES music bores me, for the most part. I did enjoy a few things off their latest album, but I found most of it to be boring, and am confused at how many people love it, cause I don't. I'm very excited though for Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks, as they sound like 70s YES. My friend bought me a ticket, so I'll be seeing them soon, but that album cover with Jon on it looks terrible. Obviously Jon's ego just keeps growing, when instead he should be propping up his band mates, cause he wouldn't have what he's got now (A YES band to play YES music) without them. I definitely won't be buying the album though, that's for sure, as I don't buy any music anymore. I mean, I can listen to it for free on yt, so why would I buy it? I don't get it. Too bad they'll never re-unite, one last time. Too bad.
That is a shame, but I understand that the modern music scene definitely isn't for everybody. A core part of my love for music is in discovering great new bands, so I fully support and champion modern Prog. I try to still talk about the classics as much as I can as well, but I have to stay true to what I'm most passionate about. My videos this week are somewhat of a response to the fact that I think it is sad that what gets the most attention nowadays is negativity. The Prog Corner got record views talking about bands he hates and albums that are over-rated...I like to focus on the positive, even though I know it won't net me as many views...that is more fulfilling for me personally even if it isn't as popular...
Long live Nathan and Scot from TPC❗️❗️❗️👍😎
your positivity is refreshing, never change. Great video!!!
Great video! Most of my favourites in there, all progressing the music despite having the disadvantage of being born too late for the 70s! 😊😊😊
Great episode!!!!! But I might be slightly biased…
