Okay... I was listening you your diatribe on using Ashdod as a port for the Gaza strip... But that gives Israel power over what gets through. If "infrastructure" isn't built by someone for Gaza, they will always be under the knife of the Israelis and Egyptians. Say... you want to build a factory in the Gaza Strip... making widgets. You're saying that any product coming out of Gaza must go through Israel. Building a port... even a temporary port, is a step in encouraging international investors to see Gaza as a potential place to build a factory to make widgets. As such a port can only improve the lives of the people of Gaza, why should they be forced to pay extortion to Israel to participate in the global market? Now, I'm definitely no fan of Hamas and what happened on October 7, but providing a means of import and export for the people of Gaza has the potential to dramatically improve their future economic viability in the global marketplace... without having to kowtow to either the Israelis or Egyptians. Ports like this, developed over time, can cut the stranglehold extremist groups like Hamas has over these people. So Biden's move may well be the one hope that truly frees the people of Gaza.

FYI, Korea and Japan does not build copies of Burke-class destroyers. They do build Aegis warships, but their latest ships are much larger and more sophisticated than the old Ali Burke class. Korea guarantees loans to revive their commercial shipping industry after the collapse of Hanjin Shipping. This is not the same as subsidizing their shipbuilding industry.

The US has a rather small shipping fleet, and all the companies with these huge ships aren’t American. Having bigger ports to accommodate these ships benefits these foreign companies, who would be getting the profits from bigger economies of scale. The US only gets marginal benefits like potentially cheaper shipping to (HA!) and from Asia. I dont think there’s a huge incentive to get these huge ships into American ports, especially with the growing protectionism and the trend for near-shoring.

25:24 I think that country of Morocco could be a great ship building country for the US. Only positives and no negatives. It is an Allie of the US. Labour there is very cheap. Young and growing population that has a lot of educated people in Europe. Large population of 38+ million people. Country faces both medetteranialn sea and Atlantic ocean. US is just across from the Atlantic ocean. Also no major players like China or Russia in the region.

China is building a thorium-powered container ship, once it's successfully, they will move onto nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. Thorium Molten-Salt reactor has many advantages over the traditional nuclear reactor, namely safety and there are plenty more thorium than uranium on the planet, it will keep the cost down. It's a very clever move.

It's true that China doesn't have a lot of combat experience, but so does the U.S. doesn't have any experience fighting a near peer rival (a nuclear state). All the wars that U.S. fought since the WWII had been lower rank militaries, some of these countries/groups didn't even have a proper army, i.e. Nicaragua, Haiti, Somalia, ISIS just to name a few.

Government subsidies are not limited to China. All countries are doing that. The issue seldom mentioned is technology and capacity. Ship building requires so much heavy industry capabilities. Ships are built by people and machines. A large numbers of engineers and diligent workers are the foundation of successful government subsidies. This is why US fails so miserably because its education system does not produce competitive edge in manufacturing.
