      Over 95 kms from Ashdod port to the Rafah checkpoint, crossing into Gaza at the Kerem Shalom point. If Egypt let them use the Egyptian side and enter Rafah there, the convoys would be better protected, as they would have to be attacked within Egyptian territory for that last distance (about 3.25 km) I doubt HAMAS would want to do that.
      Big question is: will HAMAS dare to attack the ships and men on the pier/connectors/ships, aka, foreign non-combatants?
      That would bring them to a war footing with the US as well, and that is a BIG OUCH!

    I was once the CMC for ACB1. The RRDF (Roll On/Roll Off Discharge Facility) is what you're calling an "offshore pier". The INLS is the basis of the Navy and Army's system, pier or causeway, the SLWTs (pronounced Sluts),is just one of two powered lighterage used. This is an enormously complex logistics effort, a stupidly inefficient method to get throughput ashore. When the administration said "no boots on ground" I knew that was a lie.
    The effort to get all this back to the US will be every bit as daunting as getting it there.
    I can't believe anyone thought this was a good idea. Seastate 3+ is the systems designed maximum operating environment. These are not in production, they were all built in the same yard that built one of the LCS systems.

    I think this is less about efficiency of getting cargo into Gaza and more about being able to control a point of access into Gaza. While Israel is still inspecting cargo, that process is already happening and once you have it cleared it is then completely up to the JLOTS operation to move it in. Israel has been stymying aid deliveries, this is the US's way of proving to the world it wants aid in Gaza and is willing to take a unilateral approach. Highly inefficient though, I agree. I also agree this highlights a need to update and upgrade these systems.

    The purpose of the mission is a political gesture, but also useful to highlight lack of US naval preparedness. Efficiency is completely secondary.
    Washington is pretending to care about Palestinians to offer plausible deniability to our frenemies (who don't care about them either and certainly aren't insane enough to import them).
    The show of expensive activity will likely serve its purpose. Meanwhile Israel can finish its punitive constabulary mission in Rafah. The important part from a US military perspective
    is to show (the public feel, they do not think) US capability is constrained by decades of neglect and that our Navy desperately needs a collective overhaul before war breaks out over Taiwan.

It was fascinating and not part of my day to day experience but incredible to see how goods get transferred and end up on our grocery shelves (assuming that a lot of what was coming up was produce from Central and South America). Watching this channel I’m learning much more than I ever thought I’d be interested in about naval and other military sea operations., which is a good thing. Sal is making a lot of complex information make sense including how shipping and world politics come together and has impacts in ways not necessarily immediately obvious. Every video I’m gaining new insights.

  • @RichardHuffman
    @RichardHuffman Před 27 dny +45

    I think one thing that would have helped this video is simply stating that internal Israeli politics on top of the security requirements imposed by the IDF are the reason goods are not flowing overland from Israel's (or Egypt's) ports. It has become politically unacceptable to do nothing in the U.S., but it is politically unacceptable to Likud and their coalition to allow anything that possibly increases risk.
    On another note, hopefully this situation emphasizes our weaknesses to the Pentagon wrt logistics in much the same way that the aid to Ukraine (and the ammunition consumption - why is artillery ammunition consumption ALWAYS A SURPRISE?) was a kick in the pants for our defense industrial base.

    • @garybeaton3802
      @garybeaton3802 Před 27 dny +5

      @RichardHuffman Artillery ammunition consumption in Ukraine is a shock to US/NATO because they are used to fighting one bare foot, third world, non-white country in a pack. The US military industrial complex is used to making expensive, complicated weapons systems that maximizes profits and shareholder value at the expense of the weapon's utility and serviceability. The Russians have a completely different approach informed by the number of times the land has been invaded.
      The American MIC is great for achieving results for the owners and the politicians it bribes on a regular basis but the wake up call was the Russian victory over the US in Syria.
      If military logistics was a subject taught at West Point then Project Ukraine would have never been entertained by anyone.

    I know Sal only looks at the sea side of this, but there are many questions that cast doubt if this will work:
    1. Israel issued evacuation notices in Rafah with the “safe area” being the coastal side of Khan Younis. If this pier anchors there, will a 1000 contract mercenaries be enough to prevent 1-2milluon starving Gazans from storming & boarding ships?
    1b. How coincidental is the timing of this Pier to Israel’s Rafah invasion? Does this further expose the US for complicity in the IDF actions?
    2. Who will do the last-mile distribution of the aid from the pier to the individuals & households in Gaza? Is there still enough fuel in Gaza for this?
    3. What will be the rules of engagement for ships & mercenaries if they come under fire (from Hamas &/ the IDF)?? And if the starving population or last-mile distributors comes under fire from the IDF?

      1. Depends on the ROE. If they can shoot real bullets, yes.
      1b. This has been in train for a long time before Israel struck Rafah, so there is no "coincidental timing".
      2. Sal suggests "Gaza" will provide security, so if this imaginary "Gaza" can provide imaginary security I guess it can provide imaginary distribution as well. As to fuel, why would the supplies be delivered to Gaza without including fuel?
      3. LOL! See answer #1.

      I agree, Sal is looking from the "sea side" only (no offence Sal ❤), the whole picture is much more complex for sure. Maybe it's just a test case for this scenario, maybe it's just to trying to show the weakness to get more money from the government, maybe there are some political/bureaucratic issues to be avoided, maybe ...

Any profit would be pocket change to the IDF. Maybe the IDF steals the aid as part of their plan to kill Palestine with mass starvation. Because that is why the aid delivery is a cluster - the State of Israel won't let Palestinians import food, water, fuel, et cetera...

    I dunno, Sal. The Israeli government and military have been dragging their feet on permitting humanitarian aid to Gaza since the opening weeks of the war. Maybe the US authorities have decided that using Ashdod as a port of entry for humanitarian aid just comes with too many bureaucratic strings attached. Do we know any details of what restrictions, if any, the Israeli government and/or military have put on the US use of Ashdod?

      In addition to the potential "too many bureaucratic strings attached" factor (for offloading in Ashdod). there's *also* the matter of then trucking the aid by road to any land entry point into Gaza that Israel deigns to make available. As Israeli extremists have long demonstrated, they are all too ready to block the roads/entry points whenever and wherever they choose - with the IDF and Israeli police looking on and rarely (if ever) lifting a finger to prevent/remove them.
