    That the police managed to stop traffic in less than 5 minutes once the ship lost control and sent a Mayday, then relayed to them was amazing. Yes it was 1: 30 AM , but I commend the police/dispatchers/port authority/ship's crew involved for quickly reacting saving many lives. So far ,there are only 6 dead from a bridge maintenance crew and the vehicles lost were their vehicles. You can see 3-4 stopped/parked vehicles with yellow flashing lights on the bridge before the collapse. I assume these were vehicles of the maintenance crew. No civilians vehicles/people seem to has been lost. Really miraculous given the scale of the disaster.

    As a Chief engineer on ship, here are my points...
    1. Whenever there is a blackout, stand by generators are to start immediately and sequential starting of associated equipments is completed in about 30 secs
    2. Emergency generator comes on within 45 secs, if main generator fails to start due to some fault
    3. Emergency generator provides power to steering equipment, no matter what.
    4. My suspect is operational error/ human error....I don't suspect the fuel as it is being used for over a period of 20 hours atleast when they entered US waters
    5. As a crew member, we are forbidden to talk except to our company spokesperson...and that is taken very serious and sensitive... A loose talk can lead to lot of speculations

      @bjre.wa.8681 Před měsícem +12

      From watching different large ship engineering videos, this is my take. Slow speed engines require external powered lubrication; cooling; fuel supplies pumps; high pressure air compressors for starting main engine; electric supplied from main service panel which is supplied from the ships service generators. So, if ships service generators quit then NO propulsion engine. They had mere seconds to locate A LOT of switches to be reset maybe breaker to be reset and all the while a whole lot of warning sirens and (24volt battery power supply) warning lights flashing; sound powered phones ringing with the engineers trying not fall from catwalks and climb stairs in pitch black darkness. That scenario would require some very well trained and cool head individuals to work thru the issues and restart all the machinery needed and YES, they crashed.

    Thank you for providing 'actual news'. Corporate media is a joke. There are still media stations telling people that there were other civilian cars on the bridge and there was no warning.
    The entire thing happened in about 6 minutes. The fact that the crew was able to warn them to stop traffic in time is amazing. You can see a semi crossing over about 35 seconds before it hit the bridge. They stopped traffic just in the nick of time.

Even said there might have been explosives involved. I have spent my life in Baltimore...... Before a few days ago, DALI was not a ship, he was an Italian artist, who created "The Broken Bridge and The Dream" in 1945. In 1947, Nancy Pelosi's father packed that dream up on a ship named "The Exodus" and sent it sailing out of Baltimore to Israel. Francis Scott Key was a founding member of the American Bible Society and the day after that bridge hit the water Donald Trump began selling Bibles and saying America needs to pray again. It is time for Americans to open their eyes and get off their knees...... this is NOT right.

    Hey Sal. Good breakdown.
    I was on the bridge of the USS Constellation (CV-64) heading out from San Diego. We were on our last big turn in the channel. Rudder was 10-15 degrees left when we lost the load. Went dark. Holy hell what a feeling. Tugs too far away. Pilot had already departed.
    Attempted (and failed) to back on stbd engines to control the turn. Eventually added port engines for backing.
    Finally let go of the anchor to aid in stopping.
    Felt the ship shudder and was sure we were rubbing the bottom up on the bow. Tugs came to the rescue and pushed us back into the channel. (Most of the vessel was on the wrong side of the red buoy line!). Plenty of silt kicked up.
    Hell of a moment. Once we understood the problem (precious time) and what we actually could do about it, a vessel that size, fully fueled, certainly takes a while to get under control.
    Feel bad for Dali crew and especially the lost souls. Very unfortunate!

    Hi Sal; As a former Navy officer (subs), I seem to remember that the stern of a single shaft vessel will walk to the left when you go astern on the shaft. That tells me that when they lost power, got it back and went full astern, the stern walked left adding to the turn toward the bridge. They could have gone hard left on the rudder, but the thrust astern would nullify the effect of the rudder. So, 20/20 hindsight tells me they should not have gone all astern and focused on steering back into the channel, but in the heat of the moment went panicked and went full stern. The same response on the Titanic caused a wider turn and the impact with the Iceberg.

An outside player hacked in, set in a designated course, then dropped the load and the rest is history.. in this day and age of drones, big brother, AI, cyber attacks, nothing should be ruled out.. When the Gubbment's initial response is IT WASN'T TERRORISM!!. my skepticism kicks in..

      The rudder was not functioning after the restart and the propeller was turning counter clockwise. Then the power went out again. At some point, the Port Side Anchor was dropped which turned the Ship in the Bridge's direction. The last and 3rd time that the power returned, the lights lit up the crash site before the power went out for the final time before impact. I believe that all of this occurred in around or less than 4 minutes tops. Whew!!

    I am a retired electrical engineer with more than 50 years of marine experience.. The cause looks like it is centered on the two ship generators ( not including the emergency generator) that were not set up for proper parallel operation. They only shared load properly for a short time before one became motorized. This overloaded the loaded unit which then caused the unit to trip out. This load share problem is not unusual. Typically the ship operated its generators on a one or the other basis but in this case had both on to meet USCG requirements for port areas.

      I believe you may be right. If it was a fuel problem you would have a "brown out" before the blackout as the generator struggles to keep up. I'm a retired Marine Engineer and I believe standard orders would dictate two generators to be running in constricted waters with bow and stern thrusters powered as well until the vessel has hit open water. The Emergency Bus is not connected to any thrusters but does power navigation lighting and steering pumps. It is worth noting that at 8 knots the effectiveness of the thrusters is greatly diminished. I'd estimate that roughly 5 knots was needed to maintain steerage.Also overlooked is the fact that once power is lost, those containers combine to form a gigantic sail and wind direction would play a major role.

It would have been an instantaneous alert to the USCG watchperson on duty, the moment the bridge was notified of the propulsion plant failure. The watchperson would have aroused the duty watch officer, and made the report. OR, sensing the urgency of the call, the watchperson may have contacted the Key bridge authority on their own volition...it will be revealing to know the timeline of those events...

      @ShoalsSkipper Před měsícem +2

      Sal, I'm wondering about another aspect of this event. It was the PORT anchor that was deployed. It seems to me from a momentum engineering aspect, drag on the port bow, would have swung the stern to port, pivoting the bow to starboard, where she struck. If the starboard anchor had been let go, perhaps the stern would have swung to that side, with the bow pivoting away from the bridge column. It just seems that given her momentum, that may have been the more prudent command...what do you think?

    In the aspect of getting the bridge off of the MV DALI so that it can be moved, that is going to be a massive undertaking that will require huge sealift cranes on barges as well as empty barges to place the bridges sections on. That part of the work may even require cutting the bridge remnants into smaller sections and could require underwater torch cutting to free up the various bridge parts into manageable sections. All of that type of work is going to be very dangerous, especially for the recovery of the victims as well as divers who have to make underwater assessments about the parts of the bridge that we cannot see because it is underwater and a twisted mangle. A lot of the types of heavy lift cranes are used in the oil and gas industry for the construction of oil/gas drilling platforms and only move at the speed of what tugboats can pull them and that is based on sea & wind conditions. I don't know how many heavy cranes will be needed or where the closest ones are positioned at right now, but don't be surprised if they have to travel all the way from the Gulf of Mexico or even from Western Europe/North Sea region in order to get on station to even begin preliminary work. Either way this is one big mess that isn't going to be solved in even just 1-month. The state of the base of the 2 main piers were also not designed or upgraded to have collision proof protection which should have been retrofitted considering that the Tampa Bay bridge incident happened after the Francis Scott Keys bridge was built, so that is something else the NTSB & Coast Guard need to undertake and assess ALL bridges in major U.S. Harbors immediately and take proactive measures.

    2. The foremast light did not come on woth the emergency genny because it's not connected to the emergency switchboard and thus no power.

    Great commentary. One note from Ireland: Dundalk (named after the town in Co Louth) is not 'dun-dock' it is 'dun-daawk'

    We were working this ship in Baltimore when it lost power a couple times why it was being discharged and loaded. Should have mever left port in that condition

      Some of the 1st reports I about this accident were port workers saying the Coast Guard/Port Authority forced the Dali to leave so the next ship could take the berth. Is that true?
