Hey there, I'm Cody!
I'm a filmmaker, photographer, and van dweller. I enjoy creating films about photography (primarily analog), alternative living, and growth mindset concepts; basically all the good stuff I'm passionate about!
I value honest, high-quality content made with integrity, so I don't always have the most consistent upload cadence, but you can be sure that each video here is something I poured my all into and care about.
Thanks so much for checking out the channel. I'm glad you're here!

I lived on Broadbeach Rd when there was no Malibu High School. 35 miles every morning to Santa Monica. No one lived out this far back then except directors and cameramen and heart surgeons.
Amazing video Cody thank you.
This video was so good. You the man!
I loved this video man, from start to end ✌🏼 well done :D
Beautiful video, always respect ❤📷
I've been shooting film 39 years and counting, I have seen/heard many explanations of all this. Great tutorial for beginners in the zone system. Your delivery was calm and well paced. Showing us what you called a mistaken exposure at the end (given your stated artistic intention) was perfect to include in the video. The light meter is a very artistic tool, as is scanning film. With time and knowledge of the film stock you are using you will make faster decisions based on whether you want the scene as you see it or not. That's a key factor. Do you go to shoot at a given time of the day and month of the year to capture a specific light you are likely to get or do you go to shoot and alter the scene with exposure. That's photography in the field.
Just wanted to add that beginners might not know why you work from an f stop in this case as opposed to a shutter speed as your starting point. Obviously inanimate objects think f stops and people think shutter speed is the way I start off.
This was the best explanation of the zone system I've ever heard/seen! Thanks so much!!
Great video!
I'll never sleep again after seeing you put a spent roll in your pocket without sealing it. WHAT IN THE WORLD
Don't worry. The roll was sealed seconds after the shot ended.
Doesn't renaming the photos get rid of the problem of a random order in iPhone Photos? Is it necessary to manipulate the date also in order for the app to show a chronological order?
Apple Photos, and I imagine most other photo organization software (i.e. Google), sort based on the photo metadata capture date, not by file name. So yes, it is necessary to change the date if you want it to sort properly.
Great video, but i have one question. How do you know what apeture to pick for each scene. Is this something that you need to decide for yourself and if you want more or less depth of field or is it something that can be also calculated?
Great question. The answer is a bit of both. It's an artistic choice to be made at the photographer's discretion, however, an objective understanding of how the aperture will render the scene will inform that decision. My next video is an in-depth dive into understanding exposure. It should clear up this question for you. Expect it in a couple weeks!
@@Codacolor Thanks man, that's really helpful!
Ngl metering is so unfun. Completely takes you out of the photography
That 640T though. I don’t know. Love the other films.
I got so excited on my first film camera and I was using my ISO dial like a digital cam.
Thank you so much for this really really amazing video. It explained a lot and it is crazy to have this for free.
Thank you for this! more often then not most of these I’ve seen are all fluff, this was great and to the point.
GREAT explanation
Thank you! I am learning analog photography now, and I am always in doubt when deciding whether it is best to overexpose or under expose. Your explanation made it so much clearer! (And now I am a bit worried about some photos I shot yesterday because I really think I have exposed them the wrong way 😅)
Great video!
I just checked eBay, £250 😭
Haha... yes... it was super embarrassing to drop off a roll at my local camera store-only having them call me an hour later telling me the roll was unexposed. I had just bought a new vintage camera and didn't load it correctly. Humbling
Dang, I indeed did not have my film installed correctly :-(. Dang what a waste.
I loved the FE. Had two. Note also the off-center position of the lens mount. Wish I had the FE and my 35 and 85 again. Maybe later.
Thank you for introducing the difference between negative and slide film. I agree with your viewpoints on slide films. Thank you. I used to enjoy the Sekonic L-358 and incident metering for Kodachrome and the newer E100.
I believe I learned film photography better by selecting transparency film vs. negative film. The next level was learning how to shoot transparency film to get a better print. Thank you for the tips. When using transparency film, I exposed for skin tones and not gray tones.
what film would you recommend for 35mm beginners
Subscribed - this is excellent
Right now I'm in a stressful and anxiety-filled period of my life, and your videos give me a mental massage, fill me with calmness. Thank you for this. Your work and art are true gems of this platform.
p.s. it's interesting to see that your video editing style is very similar to the disposable camera, in terms of contrast/tones and especially shadows :))
Never miss an other O. - Am I the only one who ha some dark thoughts there? Is it the soft spoken voice? Or my dirty mind ? lol.
I want to shoot 120 film so bad…but why shoot film when you scan? Why not just do digital from the get go?
I've got FE2 for my GF as a gift. It's a top tear camera. It has a comparable to FE feature set, but a faster shutter speed (1/4000). I'd also like to try FM2N and FM2T (don't check the prices for this one 😅)
its beautiful
YOU MEAN THERES A FILM LAB NEAR MY HOUSE????!”
Is that a mamiya 6?
I highly recommend the Leica Minilux as well.
I've just bought this mju1 for 5€ at a flea market in mint condition. Best deal I have made so far 😁 Great video, greetings from Germany:)
one comment and it goes with the F mount G series lenses. they do not have an apeture ring and will only shoot at the smallest apeture if you don't have a front selector wheel. I use an FE, an F90, and a D810. so i will not buy a G series lens.
I have had an FE for about 40 years and love it. For me it just works. it does what i want when i want is and the buttons are in the perfect position. i love the flick of winder to turn it on and off. needle matching exposure meter is how i learnt on my dads Minolta SRT101 so it was an easy step.
My boyfriend found this camera (mine says [mju:]-1 on the front rather than infinity) lying around and I'm finally getting around to buying a battery and some film for it. I'm excited to use it!
I am finally sending my film to get developed after 4 years. It is 5 rolls and the fear and anxiety from the wait is so real. I just hope the money isn't wasted
Almost without exception there seem to be 2 criticisms of cameras with electronically controlled shutters. One I think is valid and the other just nonsense. The valid one is that if the camera fails, repairs are difficult to impossible relative to a mechanical shutter camera. Fair enough. The second is that the camera has much reduced or no function if the batteries fail. Well guess what? The camera won't work if you have no film. Really! I have an OM2 and an OM4Ti. Each takes 2 batteries that are the width of a finger nail and perhaps 5mm thick. So carry a second set of batteries. Duhhhh.
Excellent video! Thank you for the in-depth instructions on metering. I think I need to brush up on the Zone System now!
The moment a youtuber says X camera is amazing & cheap, everyone buys it & it stops being cheap.
But it's still cheap 🤔
The greates thing i learned from my grandfather, was 1. someone has definitely uploaded a manual or disortation on anything film. 2. the greatest enemy is yourself and recently 3. no need to buy a hand held light meter, get the app.
My first camera!
