The issue is that you can never have a fair democracy that both ensures that you have representation of all the various ways to live in Europe and sll the issued faced by the inhabitants and one that's fair towards the more urban areas all while also having a functional democracy... I'm personally in favour of a confederate approach to running Europe, instead of a federal or unified approach. Cooperation is essentially, but people need to have the final say about their own lives. Not politicans who has never been in the location in question.

We definitely need to work towards free movement of people in Europe. And some countries with a high population density benefits more then others from a EU membership. But even with countries that probably shouldn't be members we should have cooperation.

It makes me wonder if the speak closely related dialects of Low German and Dutch or even if they speak the same dialect.

How typical the Dutchie is talking German. The other way around is very rare or nearly non existent.

there's also the small town Burghausen which lies in both Germany and Austria :) You can cross a bridge and you're in the other country. I was there 2 weeks ago.

I always love your videos but I especially like your Baarle Hertog/Nassau and Dinxperwick episodes. They show that borders don't have to be an issue if you talk and cooperate. Something certain countries on the other side of the globe can learn something from.

I find this sort of thing so fascinating. I come from a country that has no land borders so European borders and the history of them is so interesting to me. I can't imagine growing up in a place that has another country across the road. The cooperation between diverse countries, sharing a continent should be an inspiration to other continents.

Lol, very interesting that the historical society guy from the Dutch side has a Dutch accent when speaking German, alltough historically these villages spoke the same Westphalian dialect of Low German.

Wow... very good analysis from an outsiders perspective. Even though there's some great Swedish pop magic from time to time, the Swedish music business has been criticized alot of being just a very effective commercial money machine which produces a lot of bland mediocre "too perfect" pop stuff and too many one-hit-wonders. This is why alot of Eurovision fans has turned on Swedish-written songs. They are boring. Swedish music is much wider than this pop music and since the 1960's counterculture, there's been a huge alternative scene, with countless genres, which is a big factor in the success story. Many of these Swedish bands started out jamming in the their schools replokal (rehearsal space) on school instruments after school, as there was not much to do in the countless small towns across the sparsely populated country. Many Swedes also got to try their hands in broadcasting as a Swedish law "Närradiolagen" provides every municipality with a local radio station which basically everyone has the right to transmit from, which is why Sweden has countless college radio stations. Things like that definitely provided infrastructure and talent to a big music business. And that's also a thing Swedes are pretty good at: business.

Baarle is just a bit stranger village on the map.

Living on this Dutch German border I can see the subtle differences even if there is no actual border left. Cross border cooperation can lead to some weird stuff. I have seen German ambulances coming to the rescue on the Dutch side of the border and Dutch firetrucks dousing fires on the German side. As an added bonus both side of the border still speak the same dialect.

Border villages in Europe have gotten more and more united, while border villages in North America have gotten more and more divided.

While most Americans think or assume that cabover trucks are less fuel efficient, it all has mainly to do with maintenance. European roads are better maintained and not many trucks drive internationally. The USA has many over the road truck drivers, who drive all 48 lower states and often Canada and sometimes Mexico. The roads are of inferior quality and often have potholes. The long distances over bad roads leads to many instances where maintenance is required. Often that maintenance cannot be performed at the terminal of the truck company and so in this case time is double money, because if you need maintenance you can’t drive and you have to pay for the hours of service performed by third parties. The faster you’re back on the road the better, also to limit the cost you have to pay for that maintenance. Second reason to use conventional truck over cabovers, is comfort. The longer wheelbase of the conventional truck makes driving, especially long distances, more comfortable. The problem here is that American manufacturers (who are often owned by European companies) invest less in technology and advancement and so this is no longer true. My truck is a new 2024 model Freightliner Cascadia and uses more fuel per mile than any European cabover truck uses, even when I’m driving at European speed limits.
