Why Americans don't use WhatsApp (and why that's a Problem)

  • Around 58 million people in my home country Germany use the messenger WhatsApp. The app has replaced what once used to be the SMS text message: almost everyone who owns a smartphone can also be reached via the WhatsApp messenger. But in the USA things are different: Meta's app never really caught on here - even though it was an American invention. And this development also brings some problems with it.

The key thing that you’re overlooking is that other doubted joined out of necessity. If you’re paying for messaging and Americans damn near get it free, why would we be incentivized to use a third party messenger?
Why would an (American) iPhone use a third party app when they get the best experience with iMessage?
You can’t understand it because you were forced to use third party apps. Because there is no other reason to use third party apps, many Americans don’t have a reason to seek them out.
Now Apple is allowing rcs, there’s less reason to use other apps.

As an European I see it this way :
    1) Americans don't travel so much abroad, so they do not need to spend a lot on international phonecalls.
    2) Market behaviour: They tend to use the default app for anything they do. Like : the default browser, the default mapping service, and so on.
    3) Unlimited text messages even for the cheapest plans. They basically send short messages.
    4) iPhone marketshare. In the USA, iPhone is over 60% meanwhile in Europe is 25%. That means that features like iMessage and Facetime, sending large files, reactions, read receipts are allready built in to the phone. And since 6 of 10 smartphones in USA are iPhones, it is easy to reach someone.
In other words if an American goes to Europe, and meets someone over there and wants to resch him/her remember that only 3 out of 10 phones are iPhones. So they will be forced to switch : no free texting, no Facetime, no imessage, no read receipts, no way to send files by the default apps on the iPhone.

Whatsapp was garbage because it only allowed install on a single device. Thus if my phone was charging and I was using my PC or tablet I was out of touch. I believe you can now log into Whatsapp on multiple devices but the damage is done and I hate the app. On my one device that has Whatsapp it keeps logging me out or flagging my account as spam. I find it more interesting that WhatsApp has become the preferred method of messaging outside the US. It’s had loads of privacy issues in the past and is owned by Meta which hasn’t had a great track record. I don’t really see any unique features WhatsApp has over other messaging platforms. So it surprises me that it’s still so popular and other messaging apps haven’t managed to compete with it.

but why? Cant people simply send SMS directly? Why do they bother with an app? Here in Poland there is no such prererence, the market is quite fractured and divided, some people use discord, some use facebook and some other apps but no one needs any SMS replacements. SMS and calling being pretty much free might be a factor though, for the past decade the network providers only charge you for data, no one bothers limiting calls and sms.

still dont understand why people buy iphones, they work good thats a fact, but the price card is way to high, they are missing apps because apple does not allow those apps due to revenue, and if you get locked out of icloud and dont have a receipt of your purchase you have an expensive brick.
in the netherlands i know people use iphones as well but most company's uses android as it has more freedom, and you can actually become admin (root) of your phone, while apple jailbreak is not giving you root as android does, you can still be locked out of your phone if apple decides to do so.
but to each there own, use what you like and just install something like whatsapp (dont recommend due to privacy) or Telegram (what i do recommend due to privacy).
