  • Four friends from Castle Rock set out to find a boy's dead body. This is how the legendary coming-of-age story "Stand by Me" begins, based on a story by Stephen King. Director Rob Reiner sends Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern through dense forests, over dangerous railway lines and over busy railway bridges. Places that still exist today, 37 years later. Let's visit them!

Thank you for the great research and, among other things, taking the moment to pause and pointing out some beautiful places for a quiet time. The film is simply timeless and reaches many people who feel fondly remembered by such friendships. No matter in which country.

Not saw the film since my childhood (back then at least 4 times or more).
Fortunately German TV ZDF just aired the film yesterday again and I could watch it in the ZDFmediathek again (it is there in German till 18.5.). It is still a very good movie and brings back childhood memories.
Ty for your videos visiting all the filming locations.

I'am from Poland and i watched movie in 1995 or 1996. The movie is great and remain in my heart forever. I fell in love with oregon nature and small towns. I hope to move to Brownsville someday even though I'm 40. Greetings to all who live in this town. You live in a beautiful place. God willing, I would like to live there. Sorry for my English.

Road markings vary depending on state and local laws. Villages (just called towns here) sometimes could do without and many did, though it's much less common today.
I thoroughly enjoyed this! You earned my sub.

Here's a mildly interesting side note that only the truest of die-hard fans of this movie might appreciate regarding the store scene at "Quidaciolu's", where Gordy goes to purchase Cokes, hamburger meat, and buns.
While the building where the exterior shots were filmed no longer stands, the interior shots for the grocery scene were filmed at a small country store in the Hat Creek area of Shasta County in California. That structure and business, originally built in 1928 and known from 1932 for more than 80 subsequent years as the "Maahcooatche Store" is located just a few miles south of where the iconic bridge/train scene was filmed over Lake Briton.
There is an amazing Intermountain News article with some fantastic photos about the Hat Creek filming location where the then-owner of the Maahcooatche Store, Don Kerns, shared how his store was scouted and selected, what the two days of actual filming were like, (he described River Phoenix as "a little terror"), and the extensive steps taken to prepare for the two-minute scene - such as painting the interior walls of the store "that awful shade of yellow". He also shared how an old meat display from the store's early days was resurrected from the back of the property to give the interior shots a more authentic look for the time.
Craig Harrington, the author of the article who is still alive and now owns Intermountain News, also claimed in his article from the time that the short scene earlier in the film where Gordy purchased the True Police Cases magazine was also filmed at the Hat Creek location.
Also of interesting note is that the building, which sits on more than 10 acres and includes a three-bedroom, single-bath home on the second level, is currently for sale for a mere $420K.
For anyone interested in visiting the location, the address for the property is 18598 State Highway 89, Hat Creek, CA 96040.
Loved your video by the way!
    Best wishes,

Great video. I grew up in southwestern Oregon. Born in 1976.. To answer your question about road markings.... there are so many more road markings and upgraded roads from when I grew up. Some observations about the video: 19:05 - you can see the trees just planted in the movie have grown in and look great. 27:00 That bridge design is all over southern Oregon. There is one just like it outside Winston, the closest town to where I grew up for the first half of my childhood.

Habe gerade dein Video entdeckt..tolle Arbeit!

road markings in small us towns sometimes just dont have road markings, back then when the town was even smaller than now they just wouldnt have them. Not for the movie but thats just how it was. Same way for my town that has a population of 4,000 people. In the 80s it still didnt have any paint on the road, thats what my parents say. It does now tho. the roads at 34:40 are great examples of how roads wouldve looked back then and how so many still do in small towns

First off, I want to complement you on your excellent English. However, you consistently make a grammatical mistake that betrays (along with your accent!) that you are not a native speaker. For the past tense you use the form most common in German, the present perfect (Perfekt) tense "has been". That implies in English that the activity is still going on. English uses the simple past tense (Imperfekt) for things that occured in the past but are no longer going on -- i.e. "was" or "were". When I was learning German many years ago, this difference was a thing I had to get used to myself. So you would say "This scene WAS filmed here" rather than "This scene HAS BEEN filmed here".

Thank you, I noticed this too and it bugged me. Also he kept saying "in reality" - English speakers don't talk like that. Maybe he meant to say "in real life" or "this is what it looks like today," but instead I kept hearing him say "in reality" and it grated my ears every time.

@@goldenfalcon6702 He's from Germany. He isn't a native speaker -- like I said, he is in fact a very good English speaker who occasionally uses German grammar constructs rather than English. I was in Germany for six years in the Army and can read German pretty fluently, so I'm familiar with German grammar rules. I see that even an attempt at constructive criticism is too much for some people.
