1986 NHRA World Finals

There was some very close racing at the 22nd running of the annual 1986 NHRA Winston World Finals from Pomona, California. Included in this Diamond P production are the original commercials but, like before, never the same ones twice. A great addition for a "200 views only" playlist but still worth the days cleanup, upscale and upload.

The 1986 NHRA Chief Auto Parts Winternationals of upsets at Pomona was to the delight of many a fan who loved their underdog. It was a dark and grey February sky - which is why I upscaled and brightened this gem up. This also marked the return of Shirley Muldowney to her first national event race since her major crash in 1984.

Minneapolis, Minnesota's Brainerd Raceway hosted the NHRA Quaker State Northwest Nationals in 1990 when the track had its first sub 5 seconds runs in top fuel. Glidden would use the aluminum 429 Block for the first time in the World Finals in 83. He would slowly get his times down and by late mid 84 was matching Lee on the tree and beating his competition on the clock too. I miss this great time in racing history.

That was the day when Sneaky Pete Robinson showed up with his dragmaster/Chevy combo using small hydraulic jacks to lift the rear tires up. That way he could use his tires for his clutch. I'm not sure it the NHRA would allow it.

Ah....the slingshots main enemy was clutch failures at this time and as catastrophic as Nicole's was, ironically it was the slingshot design that saved his life as being positioned between the two slicks cushioned his tumble's over the guard rail. R.I.P. Superman.....great video except sound engineers got things scewed up with the different class of cars. Don had a rough two years at Indy 69 and 70. Victorious both years but in 69 John Mulligan suffered a clutch explosions that caused shrapnel and a bolt to pierce the oil pan. The car didn't sever like Nicoll's but caused a catastrophic oil fire, he was behind a blow torch and burned severely enough that he died a few weeks later. He had set low E.T. in that run to I believe. It shook everyone to the core. Big accidently hit the kill switch in his car before the next run and McEwen abruptly dropped out to be at the hospital where they took Moe (Johns nickname). A beloved driver was gone. A clutch explosion also cost the life of Mike Sorokin at O.C.I R. a few years earlier. Just a kid at the time but I remember those days at the strip well amongst keeping up on the action with Drag News and numerous drag racing mags....great post and clear👍👍👍

I grew up in the Detroit area and with all the car companies right in my backyard, Drag Racing was a right of passage. I am surprised they were still using flag start at IRP in 1961. My idea of Indianapolis Raceway Park was that they were seriously ahead of the pack. I'd've expected it at Gill Kohn's (RIP Gill 31MAR24) Detroit Dragway where they used to race 4 wide to get it over-with. "No Burnouts In The Pit Area Or Your Number Will Be Wiped" Gill used to shout over the Loud Speakers. "No Nitro Burnouts or You're Disqualified," Gill said at the Summer Nationals where I won in 1976 but Tommy Ivo immediately did one and he wasn't even punished. Detroit was so cheap that when I went over to the booth to pick up my Summer Nationals Winner trophy, THEY WERE ALL OUT. They told me to come back next weekend. I didn't bother for a worthless piece of plastic made in Japan. (befor C-H-I-N-A) I had Detroit Dragway, Motor City Dragway, Milan Dragway, Ubly and finally in 68 Lapeer to choose from. But the real racing took place on Friday & Saturday evening on WOODWARD AVE, GRATIOT AVE and TELEGRAPH Road. Drag racing on the street was ''THE'' social activity for gear-heads in the Detroit area. When we raced at the sanctioned strips there were rules and they classified us, so we always raced similar cars. It was easy to win. But the street? Well, everything was out there. And on Friday and Saturday evening we were out there until the wee hours racing everything including factory experimental stuff. You raced everything there was with no reserve, and it sharpened your tuning and driving skills. Once in a while if a race was close, we'd go out on the Interstate to settle it. Or make plans to meet on Sunday at one of the sanctioned strips to settle it properly. Otherwise it was "Run What Ya Brung." Going back the the bonafide strips on Sunday wasn't even fun after the street, it was like going on vacation. "THERE IS NO MONEY IN DRAG RACING"* I was told very sternly. At least not like in circle track. The draw was there seemed to be no limit to the increase in horse power we could learn to make, and how quick we could go. Out there on the street I met people who went on to become famous, like the now famous Brad Keselowski. No, I didn't know Brad, I knew his father Bob and uncle Ron and grandfather John who started the whole thing in the Keselowski family. Also Too, I met the cops. They were the demise of my street racing. Today there is the "Road Kill Nights'' and it's on Woodward, but it's so heavily regulated it's "not available." Just like the "Woodward Dream Cruise." I've been to them, it's just a show. I did it when it was REAL. The stuff today is nothing like the real thing. ben/ michigan * The famous words of none other than John "The Bum" Keselowski

so many mistakes in this video! narrator does not know the history of drag racing/ I will pick a few as there are too many to list in all- 1. Pomona was NOT the first national event of the year. The first national event was in Phoenix at Beeline Dragway. before Pomona. THIS is where all the new cars debuted. 2 All the hype of Shirley Shahan, narrator mentions she was the first woman to win nhra national event- WRONG lets go back another4-5 years to the US Nationals- Indy. Carol Cox was thr first woman to win a national event at NHRA. 3 no mention of Pontiacs racing program but they did mention chevy. awful historical info here. too many mistakes.

Thanks for watching and for your insight. I love the archival footage in this video - one of the main reasons for posting it. I knew about Carol Cox already and, ironically, she drove an S/SA Pontiac to victory, under handicap, at the 1962 NHRA Winternationals. Is that why you said no mention of Pontiac's racing program? Also, can't blame NHRA for not mentioning anything about AHRA sanctioned tracks.
