1986 NHRA Chief Auto Parts Winternationals

The 1986 NHRA Chief Auto Parts Winternationals of upsets at Pomona was to the delight of many a fan who loved their underdog. It was a dark and grey February sky - which is why I upscaled and brightened this gem up. This also marked the return of Shirley Muldowney to her first national event race since her major crash in 1984.

In my mind, the beginning of the BIG 80's with LaHaie/Amato Championship Battles on the Horizon. Back when there wasn't a contrived "countdown", so when the year's championship ended-up being decided at the last race, the last few rounds...it was real, and it meant something. I was at this race (and many Western States NHRA races in the 80s/90s This was really Cowboy stuff. When the eliminations got pushed so far into Sunday, the makeshift Fairgrounds drag strip had to use portable generator lifting, and it washed the track with as weak of light as you could imagine. Once the header flames were out, you lost them in the blackness of the shutdown, only to reappear at the turnoffs back when the trees where still down there at the top end. Saw a lot of Pomona races, this is still one of my favorites. Thanks SO much for taking the time to share all these wonderful races for everyone!

Thanks for sharing your memories! There really is something to be said about 70's and 80's era of drag racing! I remember the poor lighting at some of the western tracks I visited back then, and it made me even more amazed at how they managed those speeds in the dark like that. Just sheer will and determination and kudos to the promoters in those days as well.
