Intriguing that. Me lm a Lefthander. To hit a full.on Top Spin Serve with the ball a fair way behind your head automatically changes your Service Action & in these merits throws up real problems for the Receiver judging plain of the Ball. Best of all this Ball toss stops any nature in haphazardly looking at or around the Sun. Mark
Return with a drop and the opportunity is lost for the player
I find that my eyes are used to the sun after playing at noon at 35'C last summer right under the sun. Yeh it'd blind me a bit but not to the point that I can't see the ball and serve. The hat only blocks very little of the sun when the sun is right above your head.
Nice tips !
This is the best description of the mechanics of pronation I have seen. As a new assistant high school coach I struggle to teach this and find a lot of resistance based on players’ lack of understanding why. I’m looking forward to trying this.
Hi Bill, Thanks for the great feedback. Keep me posted on your team’s progress. Best, John
When I’m doing palm to palm, if I were to practice doing a kick serve or a slice serve, I’m having trouble visualizing what the choreograph should look like. Does the palm to palm only work for a topspin serve?
Hi Nicholas, thanks for your question. Actually, the palm palm exercise is designed to activate the long access rotation of the shoulder through the arm. It is the first step to understanding how the Continental grip and shoulder rotation create the appropriate swing. However, for a slice serve, The palm of your playing hand will not completely face forward, but it will be on a slight angle as the face of the racket sweeps across the back of the ball. For a topspin serve , the playing palm will rise more vertically from below. I hope this makes sense and I will clarify this in a in the near future. Best, John
@15:32 my guy did a no look catch. damn
Definitely the best step by step tutorial on CZcams…and I’ve been through them all lol. I’m just starting out so this is great! I just have this video on while I’m on the court.
Thanks so much for the great feedback. Keep me updated on your progress. Also, if interested, I do offer a very useful video analysis service. Let me know if you are interested. Best, John
🤔
My ball toss goes behind my head every damned time. I've tried a million cures. It goes away sometimes only to return next match. Very maddening.
Hi Tom, Can you send me a video? I will take a look and see what we can do solve this for you. Best, John
This is a brilliant and complete exposition. The only additional point I can think of that would have been helpful is the relationship between the descent of the non dominant arm and the leg drive - do they happen together or does one initiate the other? But overall this was so helpful, thanks.
Hi Tony, Thanks for the great feedback! Sorry if I did not clarify that one point. Ideally the two sync up to occur at the same time, so the racquet is falling while the legs are pushing up and left arm is creating the shoulder over shoulder rotation.Let me know if you have questions. All the best, John
Excellent stuff🎾. Best greetings from Marbella
Thank you, Alex! Best, John
Awesome, thanks
Thank you!
All the good stuff, clean and clear!
After Swiatek and Djokovic maybe it’s time to focus western more. As everybody started teaching Djo’s technic allready?
I think most would agree Djokovic plays his forehand with a semi-western grip. Swiatek most certainly a western. Did you hear Federer's Dartmouth speech? He certainly touts the Eastern grip. Best, John
Great video again. Clarifying some things from other videos. Now the hard part is executing all of this! Lol
Efficient, effective teaching, will incorporate this process. Thank you so much!
I snap my wrist and I'm the best tennis player on my block
Best player on your block? What does that mean? I don't deliberately snap my wrist and I am the best player in my city.
Another "out-of-the-park" presentation. Just the facts - no sales or drama. Couldn't ask for more. Better yet: No need to look elsewhere. Warm greetings and best wishes from the east coast.

This is good stuff
Must give thumbs up. Thanks for your advice!
Great video
Thanks!
tennis needs height division...
We were taught to hit the Continental grip by stepping into the ball and hitting the ball off the front foot. Your racket would be going out and up with an outside rub to get top spin. It worked with low and high balls and opened the court up big time. None of this hit the ball 2 feet in front of you which the average player will never be able to do. Teach a child and yes they will grow to do it as an adult.
Easy forehand winner for red👍

This video was extremely helpful and has helped me improve my serve with which I was struggling. Great insight into importance of the mechanics of the Ball toss! Thank-you!
Hi Michael, You are so welcome! Thanks for the great feedback! Best, John
Amazing analysis,,Thank you.
Thank you so much for the feedback! Best, John
If your opponent has plenty of time in reaching your drop shot then you shouldn’t have attempted the drop shot. Still if opponent has time to reach the ball they usually hit it cross court. If opponent barely gets to it they often go down the line. It takes more time to hit it cross court.
Total nonsense. Or at least only half right. If I approach right down the line I will always slightly adjust my follow-in path to cover the passing shot angles. Following my shot in would be suicide - he'd have the whole crosscourt to play into.
Really, follow the light of your ball when go to the net...that is the prevailing guideline that statistically makes sense. It does not mean not to cover the cross court pass: You protect the line and look for cross.
It would help a great deal if you would explain all this with ball placement in mind. After all if we had all the power from the pronation but no idea where the ball would be going, we could not be confident in hitting it.
Hi Paul, Please check out my other videos on the channel that identify the ideal ball placements. Thank you, John
What if they lob you
You look for the lob, move quickly and crack an overhead! Best, John
Terrific Lesson. You are a fine teacher!
Thank you, Stephen! Best, John
I agree 100% with the line to move in on. The question beyond that is, how far in do you go? Close to the net reduces the opponent's returns angles geometrically, but also opens up the lob, so how far to come in can be dictated by how much pressure the approach shot puts on the return of the opponent. It's a game of watching the position and balance of the opponent who is making the return shot and guessing on the possible shots coming back your way.
Hi James, Thanks for your feedback and contribution to the video. Yes, strengths & weaknesses, patterns of play, quality of shots, anticipation, etc. all feed into the quick decisions and tactics. Best, John
Typically you'll just want to move in as close as possible as you can do in time. Making the angles smaller and the volley easier outweighs being a little easier to lob. But of course depends on your opponent in the end
The great man so happy you can help
Thank you so much! Best, John
One advantage to having slight variation is variety in spin and direction. You don't know for sure, niether will your opponent. Obviously everything within reason.
Thanks John, your knowledge of tennis ,🎾 is scientifically balanced and proportioned to the human body. Scientific teck knowledge applied to the human structure,🙏
Thank you so much! Best, John
Taylor Fritz needs to have better physical!
Right from wrong can look similar it takes a real teck coach to distinguish the difference, thanks so much John for your intervention, teaching once again the different stances for correct posture ❤🎾
Thank you so much! Best, John
Loved to learn how to pick the ball up from the floor 😂
We will do a CZcams short on this topic - Randy
I am interested in Ruud’s serve because I struggle to keep a flowing movement without stopping. If I have a lower toss and synchronise a good knee bend and weight transfer etc I will not pause and hit a more powerful serve and with more spin if I hit up on the ball as I pronate. In the past when I have done this I felt the most confident in my serve. I have been focusing on getting away from the waiters tray position but am now working on the above with the racket on edge and pronating etc. thanks
Thanks for your comments and contribution to the video. Rudd has an excellent serve, and if that is the style that works for you, then great! Please keep me updated on your progress. Best, John
Thank for the information
Lovely work John as usual, tossing the ball to the left keeps your body upright 👍thanks john for your remarkable teaching❤🎾
Thank you so much for your great feedback! Kindly, John
I like the whiteboard!
Good tip. I see that shot angle back all the time even on ATP rallies.
You gotta bait the DTL shot watch out him coming back really sharp cross but if he doesn't hit that aggressively then hes stuck out of court and you can just about own him.
Interesting analysis and mostly true but that’s not to say you can’t or even shouldn’t hit a dtl shot there. You just have to accept that A. You’re probably going to have to hit a harder shot with riskier placement and two you have to be prepared for cross court shot which is still going to put you at a disadvantage if it’s hit with any degree of quality. That’s why riskier dtl with greater power is so important here because you want to decrease the opponents capacity to redirect their ball, especially because a dtl from player blue in this scenario is almost certainly a point winner, while increasing the likelihood they give you a weaker shot to the cross court for you to cover. It’s a high confidence shot that should really only be tried by pros regularly and by amateurs who need to keep their opponent guessing.
Thanks for your great contribution to the video! Best, John
Not to mention that hitting cross court is the far higher percentage shit because 1. Net is lower and 2. More court ie you can hit harder with far lesser risk of hitting it long
also dont forget hit pattern is more natural but its easy to over do with thighting cross
This guy really hates DTL shots. I wonder how many winners he suffered that way.
No, I actually love DTL shots, especially when I choose the right time / situation!
