Geothermal Earth Battery Greenhouse Pt. 11: TOP 5 FAQs
This #126 In this video we answer the top 5 most frequently asked questions about our DIY geothermal earth battery greenhouse.
*We readily admit we are not experts at this (we are not engineers, greenhouse experts, or thermodynamic scientists), but a family doing our best to do it all ourselves and install based on all that we have read or watched on CZcams (Don't believe everything you see on the internet) to date and in line with our limited budget. Based on comments on previous videos, we already know some things should be done differently. Hopefully, it still works well enough, even if not optimally. We plan to share the results regardless.
Background on the project: Our farm homestead came with metal pipes in the ground from a former 16' x 50' hoop house. It also had water lines run from the farm well (which also needed to be restored) and a 60 amp electric service. In the first video we installed the 1.25" EMT conduit that serves as the structure.
Each rib or section of the greenhouse consists of three 10' pipes, no cutting. They are joined by stock EMT connectors. The two outer angles are 117.3. The ridge angle is 125.4. Sides are 6' tall. Just over 10' to the ridge. 16' wide.
We installed an geothermal earth battery under the greenhouse using 4" perforated drain pipe and use high efficiency fans to pull hot air from the top down into the earth, storing that heat, and returning cool air during the day. At night, we reverse the process.
This is a double wall plastic film greenhouse.

#123 We installed a drip irrigation system in our garden using Toro Blue Line hose left on our farm by previous owners. The system is controlled by an Orbit water timer. This is long overdue and alleviates us of time spent watering the garden by hand everyday. It is also far more efficient because it only puts water where is is needed. We stay in southern spain, whwre it can get to 40 degrees C(104 fahrentheit) And coldest in winter will only be -2 in early mornings (28 fahrentheit) So we sont need to keep thw heat in but ratjer get it out as moat of the year is warmer not colder, So i wo t be putting foam around the hole, simoly to just get rid of the heat more, as that is the biggest problem for us.

We love these and eat the stems with them. This is a Fall variety for us in Michigan. I tend to pick them as small "buttons" because the larger they are, the more tiny white larvae they have. Just leave some in a bucket in your garage for a couple days and you'll see what was not noticeable when first picked. Once cooked, they freeze well in freezer bags. Add them to stews, casseroles, etc. Very tasty. Don't mind the slimy texture!

you under-estimate the buoyancy of warm/hot air, it takes a lot of power to push hot air *down* into the underground tubes. Your fans will not produce the expected cfm. The tubes will also add a 'static pressure' loss, further lowering the cfm. The leaf-blower has the power needed (1 horsepower ~ 746 watts) to move the air. Your little fans ... don't.

I think its your 6" pipe manifold. Thats why i asked if it was a clos3d system. Think of how water flows in the place of air. Do you have a bunch of turns & bends for the air/water to travel? 😮

I'm a girl and have 21 acres of Ancient Oak . I have a 4 inch chainsaw and hand saw and slowly working my way through maintaining it and freeing up from overgrowth. I make piles of branches etc. for the wildlife and big branches to decompose back into the ground . It's amazing how finely tuned it all is .. In the summer it grows crazy with wildflowers etc and come winter all gone . It's hard work on my own , but will continue until I meet my nature loving bae .

How are you dealing with condensation and bolt and seam leaks? Quonsets aren't like attics, thers's no ventilation in rhat aor space between the insulation and the metal ao condensation will get trapped. You could spray the outside with a membrane to solve the inevitable leaks, but that doesn't mitigate condensation, the membrane would cost about $2/sf too, depending where you live Unfortunately you built yourself a mold factory dude, also a haven for mice. I know it's incredibly expensive, but you should take the framing down and spray foam. If you aren't concerned about mice you could spray the outside with a membrane and dense pack cellulose. Dense packed cellulose would solve the condensation issue and the membrane would solve leaks, but mice would love to live in and tear apart the cellulose. Cellulose is much much much less expensive than spray foam. You posted this 2 years ago so you definitely have mold in the walls already. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
